John Murray Posted September 1, 2022 Share #1 Posted September 1, 2022 Morning All, After several months spent moving house, I finally had time to sorta organise my garage into a semblance of a workshop. I have been able to buy a few machines after decades thinking about buying them. They all arrived whilst preparing for the move and this is the first time out of the boxes. The garage is bare aluminium walls. It will get hot in summer +45c and cold in winter 5c. As the house is leased, there is no point insulating it. I bought a Proxxon mini mill, disc sander, dust extractor, thicknesser, planer and scroll saw. I have also purchased a Byrnes 4" table saw with all the accessories to save shipping costs to Australia. Anyways, I am not a woodworker so apart from youtube videos, I am starting from scratch and trying not to spill blood whilst I learn. I spent a day or so trying a layout without machines fixed in place to try and find out space requirements. I read the instructions and gave each machine a twice over to make sure things were tightened correctly. I ran the planer, thicknesser, and tablesaw doing test cuts and checking out the various adjustments after powering them up. After finding space requirements, I bolted them down and cut a 150x40x1000 piece of basswood in half, then planed one half on three sides. I then powered up the thicknesser and finished the 4th side. All this was to help me get familiar with the machines and accessories. Today I thought to try some angle cuts and tried a small 150 x 100 frame with 45 degree angles and a bevel on the frame. It worked out fine and kept me busy trying to figure out what adjustments and accessories on the table saw would be needed and what they could do. The proxxon dust extractor enables me to plug in the powertool so that when I turn on the powertool, the dust extractor starts and stops automatically with the powertool. A nifty feature. Who needs kits with that set-up? You have everything you need for scratch-building! Wonderfully equipped shop. I wish you'd given us some warning, though. Cheers for that. 🤣 I have the kits to do as I like the subjects. I started rekinding my interest after stumbling across Ohla Batchvarovs channel on Youtube. She has started building Victory models HMS Pegasus. I have always admired the admiralty models with full framing and that is my ultimate goal. I will use the kits to get up to speed before I start my scratch build admiralty.
