Hi

Can anyone recommend a brand of matt clear coat - acrylic or enamel - that actually dries matt? Everything I use ends up drying semi-gloss even when I stir up the sludge from the bottom of the bottle or can. It drives me nuts!

Cheers

Alistair

Thanks John! Never heard of it and you can get it in NZ which is a miracle. Will give it a go.

The stellar reviews on this are spot on. It dries in a truly matte finish. It will knock the shine off of any painted object.

AK Interactive Ultra Matte Varnish

I get mine from Megahobby, the AK store also carries it, of course, and it is also available on Amazon.

Vallejo has several different matte varnishes - I've only used the Mecha Matte version. In my experience that varnish finished in a nice matte but wasn't quite as dulling as the AK.

They're both good products, I simply prefer the AK and I believe (though I can't prove) that the AK has less of a silky finish than the Vallejo.

That being said I have not tried them side by side so that is a purely subjective opinion. Again, they're both good products.

Thanks Vitus and HOF

My experience with Vallejo was the same as others I tried - not matte enough. Same with AK but I haven't tried the 'Ultra' - will have a go with that.

My find of Pintyplus in NZ was a fail. As soon as you go to the various website offerings they don't ship to NZ because it is an aerosol. A minus for living here but hardly a reason to live elsewhere...

I use Future / Pledge / Klear for clear coating a lot. I mix it with Tamiya X-21 Flat Base to achieve different grades of matteness. Never use more than 30% Flat base, or you will have fogging issues.

There is a link, helping with the mixing ratios from a great designer and builder FichtenFoo.

I like Tamiya's lacquer colors a lot in general, but the flat clear of this series never dries truly flat.

Exactly my feeling Alistair, on my island, it's impossible to get rattle cans sent to. Not too bad except for my formerly loved Tamiya grey primer. Some years ago, I changed therefore to Mr. Surfacer primer jars, but only yesterday two European online sellers claimed, that they are not allowed to send them anymore.
Before I leave my island, I will find other ways or skip modeling :D.
