This model plan has the iron hoops but no woldings mentioned.

According to James Lees in The Masting and Rigging English Ships of War, page 2, on the lower masts the wooldings were made of rope and the hoops on the top and bottom of the wooldings were wood that was about 1.5" wide.   The rope wooldings and wooden hoops were superseded by iron bands on ships built starting in 1800, which went under the cheeks and rubbing paunch if they were present.  In addition, when the use of iron bands began there were also, 3" wide iron hoops and these went over the cheeks, but under the paunch if present.   By the same token, there always seems to be exceptions so perhaps Flirt was indeed an exception.

I am amazed at your intricate knowledge of these building issues!

ECK, Thank you for the compliment but I owe it all to others, and especially one in particular.  I do not remember 90% of this stuff and it gets worse with age, but I do have a decent library that I have built up over the years that I use daily.   I had only a few books back in the day then had the fantastic opportunity to visit with David Antscherl and saw his library of books.  The light bulb went on and I started the accumulation of useful books lo these many years.

For me, the research is as enjoyable as the build itself.

Sorry for delays in posting but enjoyed a week off In Puerto Rico and also had to wait for some 3 and 5mm pear blocks I ordered as I was short. Finally finished HMS Flirt. A fun project.

Also can compare the sister ships Agamemnon and Indy,  the former the original 2 decker and the chopped (razed) down Indy

Not sure what to do next. Chris has 2 new cute cutters (although pearwood blocks not an option)> Tempted to try the new HMS Victory by Occre. Wish Chris' 1:64 Victory would be available but that project has been in limbo for several years due to Amati's leathery. also tempted to try Syren's HMS Speedwell but it comes out in stages and the first 2 stages have been sold out every time I check their website.

The Flirt looks fantastic great job.  Thanks for the size comparison photos next to the other ships, I honestly wish more people would do this as it's hard for some of us to picture how big some of these different ships are when everything is a closeup shot, plus I just love seeing photo's of multiple ships.

Current Build

HMS Sphinx, Vanguard Models 1:64 Scale

Finished Builds:

HMS Beagle

Thanks. I decided for my next project to try and simultaneously do Chris' two new additions to his Vanguard line, HMS Sherbourne and Adder. I have opted to buy realistic pear blocks separately as I think  they look better/realistic. Unfortunately not an option with those kits. Should get them in next week from the American distributor.
