Scottish Guy Posted April 16 Share #62 Posted April 16 I use a mini bench clamp vice and put my dowel / mast in there (to have it nicely fixed and not rolling when sanding) and then use a file or sanding block (often on blocks to keep a steady height). Then I turn the dowel / mast by 90 degress and go on with the same procedure. The benchtop clamp vice was (years ago) a tenner... so not breaking the bank but a nice helper for sure. Then became apparent that this put it out of line vertically and horizontally. Not horribly so but enough to annoy. Removed and filed so the alignment is good. I'll sand out the file marks next time. I find it useful to use masking tape to try and keep the tapers on the right place. On the Booms I also use a file to make a slot for the jaw to slide into to try and make somewhat of a mechanical connection between the two. Attached with PVA and held with clamps to go off. On all measure off the plans and use masking tape to try and get the wedges in the same place around the part. In typical Amazon fashion packet of drill bits arrived with four rather than five packs. Got the knot for the ratlines right about half way through? I was thinking without the yards fitted they might survive! BrochBoating Posted April 21 Author Share #88 Posted April 21 Fair bit of progress today. Got nearly all the blocks and foot ropes on ready to fit the booms and yards later. Quite pleased. A mix of gel and liquid CA to fix knots and ropes. Gel when I need to keep a piece of rope in place while working it and liquid to hold knots. I've decided to leave these off for now and proceed with the shrouds and ratlines. Hopefully their absence will make this a safer process and not make life harder (or much harder) later. Used my monitor on one side and top desk shelf on the other (for each side) to hold the shroud up and out of the way to tie off at the top, make sure that rope is taught up to the top then in contact with nothing else for a drip of liquid CA. In picture 5, does it just look like or are the two right lines twisted in the upper part (close to the outrigger)? Like I said before, I´m not an expert on rigging or ratlines but does it matter if it would be twisted or is it easy enough to un-twist it?
