wood carving requires loooong practice.

Oh, yes. And oftentimes more than one attempt (I've thrown away my fair share of carvings I was unhappy with!).

But it shouldn't block the project.

Also true. You can get on with the carving while glue is drying or when you get bored with the other stuff.

Looking good.

My precious! She is really beautiful and cute. A bit more sanding and polishing is still required.

P.S.: when you build your own Duyfken (I'm sure you will; she’s gorgeous and much less common than Victory and dramatically less expensive), please pay attention to the 4th and 8th frames. There’s nothing wrong with them, but in my humble opinion, they could be slightly (really slightly) narrower. May be not. Just have a look and trust your taste.

Two short and four long planks remain. Fitting these wales turned out to be a surprisingly tricky task. Somehow, I lost sight of the fact that the wales should serve as the base for the planks—not the other way around! Trying to use top planks as a base to shape the wales was not only a bad idea but also potentially disastrous. A single-layer hull is a terribly fragile thing! Thankfully, I managed to avoid an actual heart attack, and the wales are now in place. :)

I've been in the same position, but from ignorance rather than forgetfulness. You've managed to succeed despite that, so well done. There's an old air force saying - 'any landing you walk away from is a success' :dancetl6:

I didn't comment much, but I am following your build. Dutch vessels are not seen often around, but as other have said, they have played an important role in history. In addition, they have set the standards for others. I have one of these in my wish list. Congratulations for your build so far, it is evident that your modeling skills are improving.

Kind regards,

Dan

the rotor (if that's the right term)

That appears to be a windlass. And yes, replace the plywood.

Here's a photo of the windlass on the full-size reconstruction vessel - https://www.sea.museum/en/whats-on/events/sail-on-duyfken

I hope that helps.
