Hi,

no kit content (as it think it might be already well known) but a first image of the first steps. I was able to finish the frame on the weekend and also started the deck planking, finishing one out of four pieces.

There might be a mistake (marked in red) in the frame build, the instructions are quite obscure on this specific place. The piece marked maybe needs to be shifted to the left!? Maybe anyone has experience with it. All help is welcome! 😊

Cheers,

Michael

Just noticed that my new thread is located in the wrong section (new member introductions). Any idea where and how to move it to the right place?

Hi Ammrok,i think your log should be in the subjects built 1501-1750 section,if you contact a moderator and ask they will be happy to help move it.The kit your building looks pretty much the same as occre's golden hind which was my first build. The part your not certain about stops the mast bottom moving left and right where it sits on part 1.It looks like parts 12 in the centre and rear are fitted correctly, just do the same with the foreward part 12.I really enjoy building occres models, the plans are not to bad to begin with and there are lots of logs on here for Buccaneer,Golden Hind and Revenge which all seem to me to be built on the same frame to help you.Unfortunatly the rigging plans leave an awful lot to be desired and i think the best bit of advice i can give you is to invest a couple of quid on 'rigging period ship models' by Lennarth Petersson.Good luck with your build Ammrok,i look forward to following your progress.Regards Mark

Hello Ammrok.  You have made a good start on your model.  I have moved your post to the build log section of the forum.  I look forward to seeing more pictures of your build.

Hi,

Looks like the piece in question is for the mast.  To check position, how about dry fitting the deck, say with tape, then check how the mast fits.

If the piece is cocked, say side to side, material can be filed off on side, then a strip of wood glued onto the other.

The mast can, and probably should have a loose fit in the slot.  Shrouds are used to get the mast into final position.

Cheers!

Don't worry, that's true. I'm currently building the San Martin from Occre, which is the same type of ship.
I hadn't paid attention to it and only saw it when the decks were already glued. You just have to lay the deck to see if the offset is correct. The mizzen is attached there with a lateen sail. It is quite possible that this is why it has to be offset from the other masts.

Thanks a lot Mark, especially for the hint on rigging! I always thought that the best is yet to come... 😉

Strangely the mast didn't come to my mind when thinking about where to place the piece.

Being my first build, when things go easy there is that slight feel like catastrophy is just a breath away... 🙂

Don't worry about that - it's a common feeling no matter how many builds you've completed!

It seems to apply to many things in life... doesn't it? 😉

I forgot to add occre have a how to build playlist on youtube for buccaneer

Yes, and it offers additional steps not mentioned in the instructions. Thanks for giving hint on these Mark!

Right away errors happened! While planking the deck I cut out more than I should. I cut ALL of the cut outs where the deck meets the frame so that the frame was visible... luckily not on all five decks but on the middle and upper stern deck.

I've read that heat loosens the planking so I used a soldering iron to do so and replaced the wrong planks. It took a whole afternoon as not only the planking was loosen but also the upper layer of the underlying plywood in these places! 😱 So I had to do two layers of planking to get them leveled again...

Lessons learned I would say, that's for sure! Unfortunately I noticed that there is still an error on the front deck AFTER I glued the decks! 🤪 Ok, I will think of how to fix this one later.

Next steps will be adding the vertical deck planks (already prepared), varnishing the deck and adding the upper side parts of the hull.

Cheers,

Michael
