Has anyone used Pavel Nikitin Rope? I see that it's on deep discount at Model Expo. I was thinking of maybe getting some to replace the rope that comes with a couple of my Model Shipways / Midwest Products model kits.

I saw that for the Midwest Dory kit I have that it lists on the parts list rope as:

#6 x 3 feet

#24 x 1 foot

What does #6 and #24 translate into in terms of inches or mm when it comes to rope? I thought maybe it was like machinists measurements, but a #6 would be 5.1816mm and I'm pretty sure there wasn't a rope in the kit that thick (I'm at work, not at home, so maybe I'm wrong). Any ideas?

When I made the Pavel Nikitin "JOHN SMITH SHALLOP", I replaced the line with after market line.  Two GREAT sources are SYREN SHIPMODEL COMPANY and ROPES OF SCALE.  Both are MSW sponsors.

ROS offers synthetic and cotton line while SYREN only has synthetic.  Both are good.

'Could be that #6 & #24 are 'part numbers.  Measure the rope diameters that came in your kit with dial vernier calipers - if you don't have verniers, one would be a good investment for your toolbox.  See if Expo states the diameters.

I can't say what sizes came with your kit but full-size banks-dory beckets and painters were 2-inch diameter. That's 4.2 mm at the scale of your Midwest dory.

If that sounds excessive (and it should!), it was 2-inch when fitted. By the time that the beckets had been broken and worn on the hooks of the dory tackles, during a season of fishing, there was much, much less left to take the weight of the boat when hoisted aboard.
