Has anyone else had trouble with the MDF frame and bulkheads in Vanguard Models? I have found they are very brittle and easily broken. I wish they were ply like many of the others I have built.

I did already email you with my answer, so here is a portion of that emial I have already sent you you:

I have used MDF for the past 18 years, starting at Amati - I am very surprised you did not know this!

As I have explained countless time now, for some of the more complex designs, ply was no good, why? Because the tolorances on the thicknesses are comical, they can be anything between 2.7-3.4mm for a 3mm thick sheet. This is OK with very simple kits (just a simple keel and a few bulkheads), but not when so many parts need to slot and interlock well - using ply would be a disaster, as batches can vary a lot in thickness.

Also to add, when sanding the bulkheads, it is much easier as the material is all the same.

Hi Chris. Yes, I got your message. However, I was interested to know if other modellers were having the same problems or if it was just me being a klutz.

Personally don't have problems with it. Did have ply with my HMS Pickle build, and now MDF with the Sphinx i'm building. The MDF is very easy to work with regarding sanding. For the very fine pieces, use very fine tools with little pressure. I can not much more say about it.

Never had a problem. It’s much easier to work with than the old fashion easily splintered ply material. So I’m thinking you’re a klutz:-)

There are many posts on this topicin years past, mostly it seemed to me people resisting change had a bigger problem than anything related to the material. Some cheaper models may use a lower grade quality of MDF, that’s certainly not the case with any Vanguard model. More significantly the is no way Chris could create his modern interlocking designs with ply, there would be shattering and splinters everywhere.

Regards,

Glenn
