Something to occupy idle hands while stuff is setting elsewhere.

Another nicely detailed 54mm figure from Art Girona. Sargon II was the king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire from 722 BC to his death in battle in 705.

This is a nice figure but a nasty casting. All the joints are full of excess metal and a lot of filing was necessary before attempting to fit anything together. Even then I have had to use a lot of putty compared to other figures, generally I have hardly used any until this one.

The major parts are assembled for priming and painting. Ive used ca glue again, it’s so much less messy than epoxy, at least for me.

We’ll see how things look when primed.

 Thanks for looking in

Thanks OC. My friend who is a professor of ancient history has sent me a couple of pictures of neo Assyrian costumes and the model looks quite accurate.

Time to make a little progress with Sargon.
I started adding glazes to his cloak and tunic. The cloak is probably about right now, probably a few more coats on the tunic. The orange fringes are the base for the gold thread. Somehow it look more like material than metal if I use and orange base.

It might have worked with his cat but I’m not sure pointing like that does for dragons.

I worked some Amaranth Red into the fringes to complete the base for the gold. I then dry brushed gold lightly over the base. I think it distinguishes the fringes from the gold plates he wears over his tunic. His leather belts were painted saddle brown and then dry brushed gold. The patterns at the bottom of the tunic were also dry brushed gold. I’m not too happy with the hair and beard but I’ll see how the face looks. I’ll probably add some dry brushed dark blue to the hair and then a satin finish.

Its amazing what an afternoon can accomplish with these guys.

I brushed a little Vallejo gunmetal blue into the hair and beard. Initially it looked too metallic but after adding a satin varnish I think it looks good and it does lift the black hair up so the details can be seen. Maybe I should add some glitter to his cheeks.

The face was painted with basic skin tone and then I worked warm skin tone over the areas that needed darkening. Bushy eyebrows and I think he looks fairly imperial.

staff and arm are added along with the shawl, just the sword to add.

I don’t think the base needs any elaboration, just the paving stones darkening into the shadows.

A bit of touching up in a few places will see him finished.
