USS Constitution by lambsbk – Revell – 1/96 - PLASTIC – With Fiber Optics

That looks pretty good. Those pieces out of which you made the eyebolts are backing plates for the lower ends of the chainplates where they attach to the hull. :)

Another small detail to consider adding is the capsquare on each side of the carriage. These are the metal plates that hold the trunnion in place. You can use strips of masking tape painted black, or maybe even black pinstriping tape.

Hi,

I like the photoetch parts you're using. Those look very good. How did you find photoetch parts from Model Shipways? I've never seen those items listed. I might be interested in some for my Morgan.

Well...Force9 mentioned them in his Connie build. Apparently they were not excited about selling them but they had extras and said 'yes' to my pleading. The info on how to do that is in his blog. I did let them know that I was a new customer and will return to look at their model products when this build is complete...not committal but I will give their company preferential treatment.

Russ suggested adding a capsquare to the carriage. First up is pinstriping. It is a bit labor intensive since the width and length has to be cut to 5/128" x 3/16" and the tape is a little 'soft.' I am not sure if it will stay put on the carriages long term. It is appplied decal style. What do you think of these with and without carriages?

thanks for the info.  I'll try to find his blog.  I am not sure if a capsquare would stay put or not.  Try one and see, and if it doesn't then decide how to proceed.  So the pieces of photoetch come off a Conny.....I'll try and see what happens.

The cap squares look pretty good. You can always glue them on if you are worried about them coming off.

No problem on the MS lead, I found it in Force9's blog.  Blue Jacket is a really good company, and shouldn't be a problem.  That's a nice discovery, I wish I had known about it earlier....like a couple of years ago...lol...but very good for future reference.

A question for some of you more experienced shipwrights: I am thinking of measuring the amount of 'between the guns' line needed and pre-rigging the rammer line on the 24 pounder canons daisy chain style. then attaching it to the bulwark and gluing the guns before working the side tackle lines with their hooks and blocks. Has anyone tried this approach? What do you think are the pro's and con's?

I have never heard of a rammer's line. The line that was seized to the ring bolts on the bulwarks and then around the end of the gun barrel and back to the bulwarks on the other side of the gun was called the breeching rope, or just breeching. It would limit the gun's recoil.

Thanks Russ. I picked up the term in an online search for 1820 smooth bore gun nomenclature. The link is: http://www.history.navy.mil/library/online/consitutiongundeck.htm (see page 4). I may be interpreting the drawing incorrectly or perhaps the article is incorrect.

Henry:

I am familar with the flexible rope rammer. I have used that on models before. However, he was talking about the breeching and how to deal with installing it and the guns.

Thanks guys. Doing this build is like learning a new language (and I thought medical terminology was hard!). I appreciate your help very much. :)

After thinking about it I will be trying to do a pre-breeching line rigging. I figure if it does not turn out well (as far as attaching it to the bulwark after completion) I can undo it and mount the cannons one at a time. I have extra rigging line from a second kit...

With Tropical Storm Andrea passing over I will probably try it this weekend. The capsquares are mostly done. I may add a ringbolt for the train tackle although I do not believe I will add the train tackle itself.

Thanks again.

I decided to continue work on the 24 pounder guns today. After looking at the photos again on the Constitution web site I thought I could make mine better so I re-worked the carriages to better reflect what was in the pics. The large ringbolts for the breeching are not perfected (I need to clear a bit more flash from the inner diameter) but I am happier with them overall. A pic of the prototype is below.

That looks nice. You should be able to get some nice detail on them. Hopefully they will show up good with your lights on the inside.

Nice, now repeat 30 plus times :)

Look really great, by looking over yours I see I need to fix a few things I missed out on my cannon.

Are you going to make a jig up so that you can measure and fit all the breaching lines before you install your cannon?

What have you planed for the rest of the gear?  I've just ordered some 3/32 single and double blocks from admin Chuck http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/273-mass-producing-rigging-blocks-with-a-mill/ for about $60.  This should allow for some goof ups.

Great progress thank for sharing.

Yes.

They do get easier as I do them. I will probably have it just right by no. 30. :)

I was hoping to pre-rig the breeching lines BEFORE installing the canons on the deck. The blocks worked out to Revell 'A' size in the kit...and since I have a second kit I have plenty of them. The gun tackle has already been tested but I have not posted pics of it yet. I'm getting closer though.

Today I completed the Gun deck gun carriage re-work and I also finished the camboose soldering. As expected the carriages got easier as I made more of them. They were tedious though (I am feeling all new back of neck muscles tonight). I could not help but dry place the guns just to check them out so that is the pic below. I will work the breeching next. I am not very happy with the Revell attachments for the breeching to the bulwak but have not figured out a way to modify it safely yet. Would a simple clove hitch be appropriate for the breeching at the knob?

The camboose has been soldered but not painted yet. The ember tray was made from scrap PE brass. I may leave the ember tray and hearth un-painted as the blackening of the solder looks a lot like ash.
