Right a few 2nd planks fitted......after ripping off the original second planking due to it fading, damage was caused to the gun ports but I've patched those up reasonably well and 2nd planking under way for a second time.

Taking a little time of from planking to work on the transom windows. Photoetched frames were primed with etching primer then followed by a yellow ochre finish. Fixed in place using a little white wood glue to allow movement for final placing. The windows were coloured first using a 2H pencil then followed by a softer HB....may need a softer pencil to provide a darker colour.

Thanks Augie.....there are a lot of decorative bits to add and not sure what to do with those yet. May paint them, may blacken them. Then i'll finish the whole transom and starboard quarter galley before returning to the hull second planking. Your build by the way is awesome.

Your concern for potential damage is well founded.  But then we face similar issues at the bow and along the channels.  Occupational hazard.  I did leave a few of the smallest details off of my transom for later deployment.  I really do admire your balcony.

its amazing what you see in a photograph that you dont with the ship directly in front of you....the decorative scrolls next to the arched window look too wide in this pic.....will have to check on them when i get home from work......thanks for the compliment....it all needs a final touching up yet and several more bits to add.

Darned cameras.  I never would have seen that.  I have an older camera with settings like 'make planking look good' and 'correct all right angles to 90 degrees'    :)

Looking very good so far harlequin. Are you painting her in the Nelson stripes or with the blue topsides and friezes.

I don't often use colour on my ships tallshiptragic....just the odd bit here and there.....will probably do the cannon carriages and that's about it really.....I tend to make a balls up when I use paint.

Ah fair enough. Bellona isn't a model you'd want to have a major mishap with paint. Enjoying your build so far.

incidently....the moulding over the arched windows and balcony was cut from a 5mmx1mm beech board. The plans called for a 1mmx1mm beech board to be used but it just kept splintering.

There are a couple of things on the quarter gallery i'm not happy with so they will be sorted this week....but i'm off climbing in the lake district for a couple of days so it can wait. The windows are photo etched plate and getting paint to stick even with a primer is very tricky. I tried several different ways of doing each window pane but it always came out unsatisfactory. The 2H pencil was hard enough to cut through the primer and yellow ochre top coat snd the softer pencils filled in.

Have a fun and safe time out there.  I have the same problem with paint adhering to photoetch.  I've tried several chemical pretreatments with little success.  However, if I'm going with a dark color, I have had some success pre treating the PE with blacken it.  Just enough to start the reaction.  It gives the paint something to bite onto.

just got back from spending a couple of days on the crags and was looking at the transom and i think i will darken the area around the ornate figures to accentuate the yellow ochre and ballance the balcony railings.
