  1. After visiting Japan in 2019, and searching for a 1/200 plastic model of HMS Dreadnought, I discovered that the only remaining pre-dreadnought was still laying there, open to visitors. I found the kit at a reasonable price and ordered the Pontosset from Australia. The aim of building this kit is mainly to practice the extensive use of photo-etch in order to make a stunning model of the Bismarck. I finaly started this build, painting the underdeck bulckheads Insigna White and the floor Dark Green. Then joining the two hull halves, the bulckheads and underdeck together. Kind regards,
  2. Ahoy, friends of the adhesive guild. Back to my roots, building model ships. It was a nice excursion into the Star Wars universe and I had a lot of fun. But now I’m looking forward to a real ship that I’ve had in the pipeline for a long time. The pre dreadnought battleship Mikasa of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). I know, nothing new for most. There are so many construction reports about this boat and yet it remains a must for me. And that for two reasons. First there is the shape of the hull. Really archaic. Reminds me of a Greek trireme because of the suggested ram. I like it incredibly much. And on deck everything on this ship is so different than on my Bismarck, for example. Secondly, I don’t just have a Pontos Detail Up Set for this model. No, as a bonus there is also the MK1 Deluxe package from KA Models. There are a few details that are missing from Pontos. Probably not researched thoroughly enough, or what?!. But more on that later. Well, it’s going to be an etching orgy in the very first cabin. What fun. Then I would like to introduce you to the available material for this project. First of all, the model. This is available from a number of manufacturers such as I Love Kit, Wave Corporation or HobbyBoss. But everything is definitely Trumpeter, which you can see immediately when you open the box. After all, my Mikasa comes from Merit International. It’s amazing how many names this model is sold under. The picture shows the box from the company I Love Kit, as I no longer have mine. Of course there is also my favorite etched part set from Pontos. And now I’m exaggerating, I know, but this model also comes with the MK1 Deluxe package from Ka Models. I’ll explain what motivated me to do this later in my construction report. Unfortunately there isn’t much from Veteran Models for this model, but at least this: This time the figures come from the company ION, which I appropriately won as a prize for my Bismarck. It is still incomprehensible to me that the manufacturers, regardless of whether it is the model or the expensive aftermarket products, that anchor chains have double bar links. So they became worried. Let's come to another exquisite accessory that I only discovered through Jeff59´s first-class construction report. These fantastic dinghies from Micro Master from New Zealand. A little dream. So, this is the first list of ingredients for my new project. Although I can’t or don’t want to rule out the possibility that one or two particles could come along. On to the next two years of fun.
  3. Welcome to the start of my Mikasa log, which is a group build with @Richmond Here is a link to Richmond’s log which explains it. I got this back in 2016 which was the first release of the 1/200 Mikasa by Merit International (Trumpeter). I also got the KA-Models MK1 Design detail set around the same time due to difficulty in finding the Pontos set. Fast forward to earlier this year and after catching up with Richmond we decided to build the Mikasa together as a group build. For this I purchased the Pontos set which will be the primary set used and utilising some bits and pieces from the MK1 Design set. To get going here is a comparative photo of Mikasa alongside its Battle of Tsushima adversary, Borodino. Don’t worry Richmond, just a test dry fit 😊 I am also documenting the build on YouTube and have linked Parts 1 & 2 below reviewing the kit and detail sets respectively. Really excited and itching to get going with this. Cheers Slog
  4. This will be a ‘group’ build with @Captain Slog. Slog will be posting under his own log as we believe posting both builds under 1 log would create confusion and unnecessary clutter Here is a link to Slogs log We will be in contact with each other throughout the build. We both have side projects we are working on which we can attend to if one of us falls behind, but the aim is to keep progress as synchronised as far is possible. I had planned to have a different side project , the Hasegawa Mikasa 1/700 as I thought this would be unique method of building both together however I cannot locate a wooden deck at present and will not build it without this. Progress from both of us may be somewhat slow as I am working 3 weeks interstate every month with 1 week working from home, however I have ‘agreed’ with my company that within any 1-month period I must spend two full weekends at home. The build is planned to commence at the start of the Christmas break (unless Slog convinces me to start earlier 😊) which for me is 3 weeks so hopefully good progress can be made in this initial period. Slog has put together some spreadsheets to help with the Pontos /Mk.I conversions which will speed up the build somewhat. I did not purchase the Mk.I set so there will be some obvious variances between our builds We have both done some dry fitting of the hull and decks; Slog has assured me he hasn't glued anything yet 😊 Anyway, enough of that, my kit is a re-boxing of the Merit, Wave and the Hobby Boss kits. I will not be posting any introduction pertaining to box art and sprues, for those interested please refer to https://www.scalemates.com/kits/i-love-kit-62004-japanese-battleship-mikasa-1905--1373804 - the details at this link include release history, box-art, instructions and sprue photographs or perhaps refer to other builds (Jeff, Tim, Craig et al). Brief History of the ship can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_battleship_Mikasa a slightly more detailed version appears on Japanese Wikipedia at this location https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/三笠_(戦艦) I thought it was interesting to note that Japanese Wikipedia states the Mikasa was part of the Shikishima-class rather than a sole ship as normally classed in the West. Unfortunately, there is little literature on this ship from which to increase the accuracy of the build so there will be no planned modifications, well not from from myself anyway, beyond the detail set. I am really looking forward to working on what will be my first ever group build! Finally I thought I would note that I have classified this topic in the 1901 + section which aligns with the existing builds on this topic - however its my belief it should be classified in the previous era.
  5. Hi everyone, I’m busy with Hasegawa’s 1/350 Mikasa kit. The kit depicts the ship as it was during the 1905 Battle of Tsushima Strait. I have the turned metal barrels from Master of Poland for the primary and secondary guns. I think I have a solution for the 12-pdr/3-inch/7.6cm guns. What I am looking for, however is a source for 1/350 4.7cm Yamanouchi 3-pdr (heavy) QF- guns and 1/350 4.7cm Yamanouchi 2.5-pdr (light) QF-guns. Does anybody know a source for these guns? For the 3-pounder, the Hotchkiss 3-pounder might be a good choice, but it looks like the 2.5-pounder is slightly different? It looks like the writer of this blog thinks the guns were placed differently than Hasegawa instructs? Anyone have thoughts on that? https://warship-mikasa.blogspot.com/2013/03/mikasas-armament-at-tsushima-for-ijn.html Cheers, Erik.
  6. Hello. Few pictures completed project of Mikasa 1:200 scale. Pontos kit was used. Enjoy.
  7. I’ll just put a placeholder down for my next construct, the Japanese pre- dreadnought Mikasa which just squeaks in this file category being circa 1902. Something new for me as my only other plastic boat effort was a Calypso many many years ago, a hack rush job on my part I need to atone for with the plastic gods. I got this Hobby Boss kit from a Canadian supplier. It must be the same product as various others of this ship under different labels (Trumpeter etc.). First impressions. Compact size. Good value. The plastic is really, really good. Highly detailed, workable, not brittle, and a real mother lode of part complexity. I’m almost questioning my judgment in getting the pricey Pontos upgrade, I think I could do a lot out of this box with some good detail painting and a few of my own bits of customization, but we will see. I ordered the Pontos at the same time but it is still between me and the supplier in the U.S.. No doubt marooned somewhere in the gears of the Canadian customs bureaucracy and postal system. Just poking about tentatively while I wait. In an hour and a half I have a hull with portholes and a deck! The fit is amazing. With wooden ships I’m a month and a half of planking to get here. Gives me something to look at while I ponder what to make out of this kit in terms of an overall assembly, painting and presentation scheme. I have a construction project starting in about a month, so I’ll just be making a start on this over next few weeks, I expect this Mikasa will be with me awhile.
  8. Here's my beginning for the 1:200 Wave Models IJN Battleship, Mikasa, construction project. Along with the basic model kit, I have the Pontos Detail Set and an Artwox wooden deck. The Artwox deck and kit were purchased at the same time, but the Pontos set only became available for me later. The Pontos set also contains a wooden deck, so in the course of construction, will determine which deck looks best and use that deck. In case you are wondering, it appears that Wave Models and Merit Models are the same kit in a different box. It's also worth noting that the Wave Models kit I have here appears to be produced with the Asian market in mind as both the instructions and the color guide are all written in Chinese only. As always, the Pontos detail set is beautiful. Lots of machined brass parts, some resin bits, and 10 large sheets of photo etch. The brass props included with the set are jewels. Over the next few days, will begin construction of this kit and posting of progress photos.
  9. Hello all, I began this build about a year ago. I took several pictures during the progress of the build. Although it was not a true "log", it will show how it came along. I started a log on "another" website, and got very little interest, so I gave up. Recently I was looking at some of the ship builds here, and found CDW's Mikasa Log. He inspired me to continue on my Mikasa with his very detailed log. He was very helpful with some rigging tips and I posted some of my own rigging attempts. I figured I was hijacking his build log, so this is why I'm doing this. I hope you all enjoy what I've come up with. I decided NOT to paint the PE. I have built several kits with PE, and those that I painted, lost all the detail, all the wonderful, beautiful photo etch work that went on. The amount of work and incredible dedication that it takes to install this stuff, in my opinion, dims when it's painted. The pretty gold color of the brass is like jewelry. Even those that couldn't care less about a model ship, are drawn to it with "ooohs and ahhhs". I also like to mess around with my own colors. I just can't see making a bunch of gray ships that look like floating penitentiaries. So some might be highly offended by my interpretations. Sorry. Life's too short and I'm having fun. So here we go...
