Build area for the last 3 days, so no chance to work on the ship.



I finally cleared the build area last night after new carpets had been fitted and have been able to resume work on the ship thankfully.

First task was to complete the middle deck planking by the side entry ports.


Followed this fitted the quarter gallery part 220 and the lower stern counter. Still need to complete some sanding of 1st planking to remove some excess filler.



I was then able to fit the additional quarter gallery support strips (221 to 224)


Some strips required some filing to get a good fit, good to see a well glued finger!


Finally started to look at fitting of quarter gallery skins 365 to 370. To make sure I get the cut right decided to make a paper template, and this worked like a dream.

So impressed by your ambition in taking this kit on for your second build. Looks like you might be going for the world record speed build as well. I will follow your build with interest.

Thanks for the comments, I don't think I'm going that fast, it's certainly not the plan, I'm lucky as I can usually spend a hour or two a day working on the build.

Completed adding the outer skins to port quarter gallery, this was quite a fiddly little build, not my best bit of work but will learn the lessons and try to make a better job of the starboard side.

Hi Kevin

Thanks for the visit, when I was about to fit the middle window strip I noticed the glazing that I glued the night before had gone AWOL. It took some time to find the clear plastic glaze which had not been glued very well and had fallen on the floor when I was checking the final dry fit.

Once again many thanks for you kind comments. We try all sorts of tricks to help the building process, some work well and others not so well. It's good to see you're progressing with the rigging; it looks a tough challenge but I'm confident you will do a great job and I look forward to following you progress with great interest

Just an idea, there's no need to fit the glazing inside the gallery's now. You can just leave the windows and fit the glazing in each individual window and fit the windows later . There's no rush to fit them, and it can save any damage to the gallery's during your build that could occur. Keep up the good work. DAVID

To follow up on what David suggested about glazing the windows.  I initially used the plastic sheet supplied in the kit to glaze the quarter gallery windows but later on I found MIcro Glaze by MicroMark here in the USA.  I used it to glaze the quarter deck screen windows and like the effect, so I cut out the plastic glazing from the quarter galleries and will glaze each indicidual window frame for the galleries and stern windows with Micro Glaze when I get to that stage.

Hope to start the second planking either tonight or tomorrow, only one more strip to add to quarter gallery. First set of photos is the assembly method for each quarter gallery skin.

 

 

 

The next two pictures show the entry port lining

 

Sometimes accidents happen, one of the clamps fell during the fixing process and managed to knock the sanding sealing tin on the way down, although the lid was on, it came off on contact with the floor. Despite cleaning the carpet several times the stain is permanent. I should have been more careful and kept the work area less cluttered. I will have to buy a new carpet, but this will have to wait until I have completed the second planking.

Started 2nd planking tonight, put the key strips on both sides and will wait until the glue is fully dried before adding the next strips. I plan to plank down to the water line and then plank up from the keelson to waterline. I expecting this task to take approx. 4 weeks to complete.

 

 

I will add some more pictures once the 2nd planking has progressed down toward waterline.

 

Also had to effect some repairs to the Captains chair tonight as the leg has come out. Needed to glue a new nut into the leg, should be good to good in a couple of hours time.

hi Glennard your build is going great ,thats the good thing about this site there is always someone who has made the mistakes before and will advise you how to avoid or correct them  . Seems you aint made any yet .I to have resently joined the club of Victory builders but mine is the Billings version (i know im miserable) and my problem is the other two Billings builders seem to have left town,instructions measurement and detail are a bit vague in my kit but then i knew this would probably be the case before i bought it so as you seem to be nearest my build stage i was hoping i could ask a few questions from time to time  . Assuming you dont mind and please say if you do ,can you give me approx depth of dummy gun ports as i need to scratch build them and is your deck planking 3 or 4 mm and hullplanking 4 or 5 mm .Thanks ill try not to bother you to much and keep up the good work.

I have been able to spend some time this weekend continuing with the 2nd planking, have finally cleared the gun ports, so hopefully I should be able to speed up a bit. Here are some pictures.

I thought I would share the method I have been using for the second planking, it may be a bit of a long winded process but it works well.

 

Time taken to fit this plank was approx. 10 minutes, which included the time to take the photos.

 

Stage 1

Dry fit the plank at bow end and use a map pin to hold in place, the pin is located just beneath the plank.

 

Stage 2

Continue to pin the plank around the bend

 

Stage 3

Final dry pin point is when the plank bend is complete

 

Stage 4

Mark the cut line

 

Stage 5

Remove the plank, by just releasing the pressure from the pins, but leaving the pins in place.

 

Stage 6

I know many builders will use CA glue, but I prefer to use Super Phatic which is a hybrid between CA and wood glue for the 2nd planking. It has a good grab, and is easy to clean off the fingers. It normally takes 20 minutes to set.

I apply the glue to the whole plank.

 

Stage 7

Fit plank to hull and tap the pins back in.

 

Stage 8

Add more pins along the length.

 

Stage 9

Make sure the stern section is pinned.

Hi Glenn, just read your post on the method you used for second planking. Thank you it is very timely as I am about to tackle this myself, after I finish setting up the Quarter Galleries. I like your method and have copied it in word and printed it out, hope you don't mind. The map pins are a great idea, I use titebond wood glue so they will help in holding the planks in place.

I used the exact same metod for my planking.But glad you showd it.I find it esyer to get the length first before i steam the plank in water.

Many thanks for viewing my log. So far I have not had to steam the planks to get the bends which is a big bonus. I used a plank bender tool for the 1st planking layer however.

Thanks for sharing the method of second planking Glenn, will give it a try on my ship as I am just about to start. Have done the wale with a few planks and CA glue but I am not too happy as there's not a lot of movement time and I do like to get a really close fit between the planks.

I'm fast approaching 100 hours of build time since I started the build a couple of months ago!

 

I've now 2nd planked down to the approx. waterline and have also started planking up from keel, as I really liked Patrick's 2nd plank effect so I thought why not give it a go as well. Fingers crossed mine will turn out as good looking as Patrick's.

 

 

The plan is to continue to plank up from keel until the planks reach the waterline.

 

I've been very happy with the fit of the 2nd planking except for one small minor plank section around the bow section which was sitting proud of the hull along the bottom edge, due to a poor bit of 1st planking. I didn't notice the problem until after the 2nd plank was glued in position. So I used a lot of pins to make sure the next plank was fitted correctly and I will need to do a little fix on the problem area before I get around to the copper plating stage.

 

 

I'm also aware of another small potential problem with the fit of the 2nd planking where it terminates with the bottom edge of the lower stern counter. I will show the problem as the planking progresses but already thought about a couple methods for a simple fix. Will decide on best method once the 2nd planking is complete.
