  1. I must admit that the same potential problem occurred to me. I thought that once I had done my first planking, sanded it all down and sealed it I could then, after the final planking, cover the open hull before the final sanding. I know you only have to plank once which makes life more of a problem. I could only think of giving the whole boat a really good blasting with a powerful hairdryer to try and blow the dust out before too much varnishing.
  2. It remains un planked for the first layer. Then balsa filler blocks get put on and shaped before covering the whole lot with the second thin planking. Strange method I grant you but that is the way it is!
  3. Thank you for the suggestions, much appreciated. Don't make apologies, I know the planking is a complete mess but I was stupid enough to follow the instructions. You will aware if you have gone through the whole log that it was a problem about to happen - and it did! Anyway, my concern now is just to get the hull covered and work from there ignoring instructions for the second plank.
  4. Thanks Dom, I appreciate your comments and I realise that however careful I am the bow is going to require a lot of sanding and tweaking before the second layer. I really do wish that the wood was not so thick and a bit keener to stay bent! Hey ho! I will ignore the instructions for the second planking anyway and plank to the decks not the waterline. I think I can make a much better job of that.
  5. Hello, a few pics for you to see to show my 'undoing' and my additions. I partially removed six planks from the bow to at least give me a bit of room for some tapering and, on further advice have now put on the garboard plank and one other. I know folk like to see the bad news as well as the good and at least you can see that I am trying to work through the 'following instructions' error!
  6. Oh dear! When you find someone to kill, let me know, I want to help!!! I had been trying to get some more wood from AL for a completely different project. To say they are less than helpful is an understatement but they may 'sell' you the wood you are short of. Maybe if you can get in from the original supplier you might get a better colour match? I don't know, just a thought. How on earth did you do all that planking so fast? I have an extra staircase as well for OcCre. As I said to Al I am sure I saw somebody's build with a staircase going from the lowest deck to the bilge but I can't remember where, sorry.
  7. Gosh Al, I do see your problem. I can't think of any easy solutions but I wanted you to know that I do sympathise. I am sure someone out there with far more experience of boats will have some ideas. I know it doesn't help you at all but this is not a problem I encountered at all. I am surprised it didn't show up more when you put your second deck in. Anyway as Capt Fisher says and I totally agree your detailed work is superb. I am still surprised that there is so much difference in two kits that are supposed to be of the same boat. Anyway, I am sure with your skill and ingenuity and a bit of help from others you will find a way around the frames. Good luck.
  8. OK, OK! I told you I was no good at maths but I am getting my garboard plank on! It might not fit, it might need sanding and filler and goodness knows what else but it is going on!
  9. I guess that works for the fan template then? However the runners are taking up the same space they did before, they are just in one line instead of 10!
  10. Thanks for the post but I am just even more confused now!
  11. I am still here and very jealous. I am getting private tuition from cannon fodder as I am a complete dunce when it comes to this planking lark. I have already had to undo a load of work and am still not sure where to go. I can however think of several places I could put this kit!!!!!
  12. Many thanks, I do appreciate that as a first planking it is to provide a sound base for the second. I am trying to get my head around the whole idea though so that my second effort is better. As for the plank direction, this has been mentioned before. It seems my mistake was following the instructions and that is how they say to do it. I have gone too far with it now to remove everything and start again so I will have to reach a compromise of sorts.
  13. Oh CF, so much effort on your part for which I really am very grateful You know there is a 'but' coming! But, the thing is I can understand the principle and the need to taper. Where do you get or how do you make the fan template in the first place. What is the significance of the vertical line across your template. If it represents a bulkhead why isn't there a line for each one? On your very first tick strip where you measured the gap you added a new line to the template. I can't see that you have used this new line at all. Doesn't this then indicate an ongoing gap? Lastly, for now at least, using your fan surely would mean tapering the planks on both sides. Somewhere in my head I thought I read you only do one side. Sorry, you can see I am still lost and I don't want to mess up your build log for everyone else. PM may be the way forward thank you for the offer. I will try and do some more pictures for you and clarify measurements.
  14. This is quite a different order from my kit. How do you make it look so easy? Is there any chance of a picture of your port side planking, it might help me with my problems!
  15. Hey, thanks both. I can't believe you are taking so much trouble. AL I hope you are at least learning rom my mistakes and CF I really can't see how removing the whole six strakes is going to help. Presumably I only need to remove from the widest bulkhead to the bow. Don't forget that unless I am a real dunce that the stern is fine and the planking for the transom OK. Having sent pictures of the bow, somebody please tell me how to taper the necessary strakes for the first planking. AL, I do agree with you, I could make the damn thing smooth even if I do it with papier mache! But I am trying to get my head round this wretched process just in case (!!!!!) I ever decide to do a boat again! Had a good Birthday thanks guys and gals except for this boat. I do so want to get it right but I am not a mathematician and never have been. If only someone could show me how to do it in real time I think I would grasp the concept. Words and graphs and fans are just not doing it for me! So, CF anything you can manage would be very gratefully received, not just by me but I think by AL as well as he has only single planking safety. Onwards and upwards all, I haven't hit it with a large hammer just yet!!!!
  16. I have just measured the remaining space on the widest bulkeads left to plank. 3 of them are practically 10cm. The space left on the bow is 5.5cm if I can remove 3 strakes or 4cm if I leave them. The longest remaining distance or length is 26cm. The strakes are 5mm wide. The lowest one on these pictures is not yet glued but I might be able to remove the three above it. I am not sure but I think you will know - if I started at the keel working up I think I could get in even more of a mess?
  17. Hey all, thank you very much for your posts and suggestions. What I think I will do is take a picture of the bow so you may be able to tell me better where I went wrong. It started off OK. I think, if it is the way forward that I can remove the last 3 strakes from about the middle of the hull (longitudinally) to the bow. It might take a bit of soaking but I think they would come off. I will also do some measuring and see what that suggests. Not quite sure I understand your trapezoid idea Al but might PM you on that if you don't mind. Thanks Dom I see what you mean but I am not sure which side of the strake you taper. Is it the side nearest the hull or the top deck? I may not do much today as it is my Birthday but will get back to you all as soon as I can. Again, thanks so much.
  18. Hi Hamilton, thanks for the post. It might look great but I have a nasty feeling I have some undoing to do! I don't think I have put the bowsprit (?) on yet but as she is she measures 62cm stem to stern.
  19. Thanks CF. No you are quite right I haven't tapered any planks yet. I really am trying to understand your help. Do I need to go back and try and remove some planks or can or taper from where I have got to now. Which side of the plank do I taper from? I believe I have to leave one side untouched in order that the next one has a flush surface, is that right? Since I haven't yet worked up from the keel how do I work out how many planks I need at each place? I am sorry to be so thick but I really am trying to get this right. I can't understand why the stern is OK but the bow is going wrong. I will check out drop planks tomorrow but if you can think of any other way you can help my simple brain please let me know.
  20. Oh thanks! That really doesn't help me now. I don't understand early tapering, late tapering, intermediate or how to do it despite me begging for help from the beginning. I will have to do my second effort differently but hopefully one way or another I will have a smooth surface to play with!! This is fun, I am enjoying it. This is fun and I am enjoying it. This is fun and really, I am enjoying it!.
  21. I have done the wretched pots but am not happy with my foliage yet and I wouldn't put them in until I have finished this wonderful and truly liberating experience of planking!! Do you notice a small sense of irony creeping in here? Anyway, I though we had agreed that our models were going to be post mutiny without breadfruit! Thanks for the nice comment about my transom!!! I am having serious problems with my bow and am beginning to understand why I should have perhaps stopped and worked up from the keel. I am beginning to have serious clinkering problems. I don't know whether to put in some wedge shaped 'stealers' now or see how it goes and be prepared to use quite a lot of filler afterwards. Can anyone help?
  22. If I can interfere with someone elses build I would suggest Al that you mark out where the holes will be as you plank over them. You can then cut down on the planks covering the holes with a really sharp xacto afterwards and just file or sandpaper the edges .
  23. CF! You can partially ignore the PM I sent you because I found your log!! The garboard is what you said which is why I stopped and carried on downwards. Thank you for saying she is beautiful because as you well know I am not planking to the rules. I guess your question re the deck edges refers to those that will be seen on the exposed hull? The instructions say paint them brown but I have seriously been thinking of putting an edge strip on them - I think it would look a lot better.
  24. Some more progress ? pictures. The lowest strake here isn't glued yet - just moulding!! The extra bit of wood is moulding again.
