Many thanks for those, in fact without realising it I have been trying a few techniques without really meaning to. At least this first layer is turning out to be a learning experience!!!
-
Woh there fella!!! Not even close to a second layer yet but, when I get there I was thinking of doing exactly what you just said and don't even begin to tell me 'I told you so' or any of that 'here we go again' stuff!!!! (Only joking but I'll bet that had you going for a micro second - tee hee!) Also, no you dare not, you wouldn't like what they tell me to do at all!!
-
The 'covering' of the hull with strips of wood is coming along very slowly. There is absolutely no way that I would describe what I am doing as planking. Suffice to say that I will need a great deal of help regarding 'lining', start point etc etc when it comes to covering up with a second layer.
-
Don't be dismayed - you should see the state of my hull !!! Actually, you shouldn't, you would be totally ashamed of you student!!! Happy Easter anyway.

Hi again, my log is on Mike Dowling Bounty OcCre 1/48 Several people are building the AL model Hope this is helpful.
-
Hi there, have a flick through what others are building. I seem to be the only person trying to build an OcCre kit, everyone else is doing the AL model. I really don't know which is best but they do seem to be very different both in build and content. I am biased but then I would be!!!

I must admit that the same potential problem occurred to me. I thought that once I had done my first planking, sanded it all down and sealed it I could then, after the final planking, cover the open hull before the final sanding. I know you only have to plank once which makes life more of a problem. I could only think of giving the whole boat a really good blasting with a powerful hairdryer to try and blow the dust out before too much varnishing.
-
It remains un planked for the first layer. Then balsa filler blocks get put on and shaped before covering the whole lot with the second thin planking. Strange method I grant you but that is the way it is!
-
Thank you for the suggestions, much appreciated. Don't make apologies, I know the planking is a complete mess but I was stupid enough to follow the instructions. You will aware if you have gone through the whole log that it was a problem about to happen - and it did! Anyway, my concern now is just to get the hull covered and work from there ignoring instructions for the second plank.
-
Thanks Dom, I appreciate your comments and I realise that however careful I am the bow is going to require a lot of sanding and tweaking before the second layer. I really do wish that the wood was not so thick and a bit keener to stay bent! Hey ho! I will ignore the instructions for the second planking anyway and plank to the decks not the waterline. I think I can make a much better job of that.
-
Hello, a few pics for you to see to show my 'undoing' and my additions. I partially removed six planks from the bow to at least give me a bit of room for some tapering and, on further advice have now put on the garboard plank and one other. I know folk like to see the bad news as well as the good and at least you can see that I am trying to work through the 'following instructions' error!
-
Oh dear! When you find someone to kill, let me know, I want to help!!! I had been trying to get some more wood from AL for a completely different project. To say they are less than helpful is an understatement but they may 'sell' you the wood you are short of. Maybe if you can get in from the original supplier you might get a better colour match? I don't know, just a thought. How on earth did you do all that planking so fast? I have an extra staircase as well for OcCre. As I said to Al I am sure I saw somebody's build with a staircase going from the lowest deck to the bilge but I can't remember where, sorry.
-
Gosh Al, I do see your problem. I can't think of any easy solutions but I wanted you to know that I do sympathise. I am sure someone out there with far more experience of boats will have some ideas. I know it doesn't help you at all but this is not a problem I encountered at all. I am surprised it didn't show up more when you put your second deck in. Anyway as Capt Fisher says and I totally agree your detailed work is superb. I am still surprised that there is so much difference in two kits that are supposed to be of the same boat. Anyway, I am sure with your skill and ingenuity and a bit of help from others you will find a way around the frames. Good luck.

OK, OK! I told you I was no good at maths but I am getting my garboard plank on! It might not fit, it might need sanding and filler and goodness knows what else but it is going on!
-
I guess that works for the fan template then? However the runners are taking up the same space they did before, they are just in one line instead of 10!
-
Many thanks, I do appreciate that as a first planking it is to provide a sound base for the second. I am trying to get my head around the whole idea though so that my second effort is better. As for the plank direction, this has been mentioned before. It seems my mistake was following the instructions and that is how they say to do it. I have gone too far with it now to remove everything and start again so I will have to reach a compromise of sorts.
-
Oh CF, so much effort on your part for which I really am very grateful You know there is a 'but' coming! But, the thing is I can understand the principle and the need to taper. Where do you get or how do you make the fan template in the first place. What is the significance of the vertical line across your template. If it represents a bulkhead why isn't there a line for each one? On your very first tick strip where you measured the gap you added a new line to the template. I can't see that you have used this new line at all. Doesn't this then indicate an ongoing gap? Lastly, for now at least, using your fan surely would mean tapering the planks on both sides. Somewhere in my head I thought I read you only do one side. Sorry, you can see I am still lost and I don't want to mess up your build log for everyone else. PM may be the way forward thank you for the offer. I will try and do some more pictures for you and clarify measurements.

Hey, thanks both. I can't believe you are taking so much trouble. AL I hope you are at least learning rom my mistakes and CF I really can't see how removing the whole six strakes is going to help. Presumably I only need to remove from the widest bulkhead to the bow. Don't forget that unless I am a real dunce that the stern is fine and the planking for the transom OK. Having sent pictures of the bow, somebody please tell me how to taper the necessary strakes for the first planking. AL, I do agree with you, I could make the damn thing smooth even if I do it with papier mache! But I am trying to get my head round this wretched process just in case (!!!!!) I ever decide to do a boat again! Had a good Birthday thanks guys and gals except for this boat. I do so want to get it right but I am not a mathematician and never have been. If only someone could show me how to do it in real time I think I would grasp the concept. Words and graphs and fans are just not doing it for me! So, CF anything you can manage would be very gratefully received, not just by me but I think by AL as well as he has only single planking safety. Onwards and upwards all, I haven't hit it with a large hammer just yet!!!!

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
