    Greetings all!

An update for you. I have now completed all the masts and the yards complete with pulleys, blocks, foot ropes, spars etc. Sure was a long job, I don't find tapering one of my favourite tasks.

The observant amongst you will notice that I have pre-threaded all the blocks etc under the foremast platform as I can't for the life of me see how they could be threaded once the shrouds and ratlines are in place.

Do you think this is good idea and if so should I do the same for the other masts?

My task now as I am sure you know is to knit this lot together! It's going to be a long haul!

Just a thought, keep it coming with the pictures. Sometimes it is easier to spot a mistake before it happens and we only want to help.

Make sure you sand along the grain of the planks. If you try to do it across the edge you will splinter them.

I'm not very clever but my thought would be, tight enough to be taut but not so tight as to put any real tension on them and the masts themselves.  I think the idea is that they look more taut than running rigging, but since this is a model, they're not really holding up the mast.  And also remember, depending on the point of sail (which direction the wind is coming from) the windward side's shrouds are tighter than the lee side.  Not knowing how delicate things up top are, I would not risk putting any more tension than is needed to look good.  I wonder, will the thread you use have much stretch over time?

Mike, what brilliant job you have done! Fantastic looking model.
I've just spent an hour or so reading this whole thread and found it very interesting and helpful.

I have just started my very first ship model. Gorch Fock 1:90 by Mantua. After hours of online reading, studying the instructions/labelling, I finally made a start yesterday (I have made the stand!). Your building log here has inspired me to do the same, as you have had such helpful friendly advice along the way, which I know I will also require! What a great site! Cheers

    Hello all!

I have now finished the hull ! There are a few accessories like barrels etc to add but they will wait until I come to the end as I don't want them rattling about. A few bits to do on the launch as well but they also will wait.

Thought you would like a few pics. For the purists amongst you out there I have made a couple of minor modifications and I may give prizes for anyone that can find them!!!. The fact that it is not painted is not a modification but personal choice so no prizes for that.

I think the point has been made quite enough. The comments have obviously been taken on board. Further comments along the same lines are neither helpful or constructive. Give the guy a break and get on with some modelling.

    Mike,
When at all possible, work from the inside out and then the spars and running  rigging. If you do not already have any, consider getting a rigging book or two.  Volume 4 of TFFM by David Antscherl, James Lees Masting and Rigging are VERY good.  The former explains how-to rig a sixth rate, but much of the  information will serve you well for any vessel.  The latter covers a range  of vessel sizes from 1625 to 1860 in such a way that you can calculate mast, spar and rigging sizes.  It is not so much a "how to" book but gives a wealth of information including where each piece of  rigging starts and ends.  It is laid  out  in pretty much  the order you would do the rigging.  There are a few others that many of the  folks here like and can recommend.  These two happen to be my personal favorites.

Once the masts are prepared you should start on the shrouds first altrnating from port to starboard for each shroud.  Once they have been rigged and connected to the deadeyes you would then start on the stays.  This is how I normally start out.

I really appreciate your reply, thoughtful but not at all patronising, thank you very much.

Yes I like you learn far more from pictures than words so I may well have a look for the book you suggest.

    Thank you again.
