ChrisLBren reacted to rafine in Frigate Essex by Rafine - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Kitbashed
The burton pendants, shrouds stay and preventer stay are now done on the lower main mast. The rope sizes were, of course, larger than for the mizzen, but the procedures followed were the same. This phase of the work will be completed next with the same lines on the lower foremast. This may be delayed a bit since my kids and grandkids are all arriving for an extended holiday visit.
Let me take this opportunity to wish all who visit this log a very happy holiday season and a healthy New Year.

Some flowers for Christmas.
Parts in the first picture are almost longer to prepare than to carve.

ChrisLBren got a reaction from CaptMorgan in USF Confederacy by ChrisLBren - FINISHED - 3/16 Scale
Thanks Ben, Rusty and Mark - here are the updated photos. I will be adding the channels next in boxwood and dye their inverted knees with Fiebings black leather dye. I will scratch the deadeye strops and chain plate assemblies (hoping to get a torch for Xmas), then its finishing the head rails and adding the stump masts/anchors and mounting her to a display board.
Yancovitch - I did not simulate caulking on the hull planking - not really a fan of that look - and most museum models do not show this detail. You can see from the photos that the Tung Oil finish I used did accentuate the lines of the planking slightly - which was the effect I wanted. I used a number 2 pencil to simulate caulking for the deck planking. As far as treenailing - at this scale i didn't want to bother with it - I do think think the drilling and saw dust method would work well though if you want to go for it. All planks were glued to each other and the bulkheads to try to get as tight of a result as possible. Hope that helps - and thanks for the kind words!
Happy Thanksgiving !

ChrisLBren got a reaction from mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Looking good Mark - go with the Pear if you can afford it - much better wood in terms of workability and less grain.

Hit a big milestone... framing is complete and ready for planking. Well, one minor tweak to the transoms to get smooth run to the counter but that's not going to be a stopper.
Right now, I'm having second thoughts about the bulk of the planking in Swiss Pear and am considering cherry. I'll ponder a bit more.....

The hammock netting has now been installed in the hammock cranes. The netting is the veil material from the kit. After cutting into oversize strips, I steamed it with an iron to remove the kinks and soften it. The strips were then glued to the crane bottoms and the wire at the top on each side, using medium viscosity CA. Final trimming was done using a small scissor and a razor blade.
With completion of this item, work on the hull is now finished for the time being. The remaining hull work ( head, lantern, anchors, stern boat ), will be done during, or at the completion of, the rigging. I am about to begin the standing rigging.

I don't own any of these marvelous tools and am very jealous - I make due on an obsolete Preac table saw, a 30 year old Dremel, a rickety Delta scroll saw, and fingernail sanding sticks from a beauty salon...

ChrisLBren got a reaction from Captain Poison in USF Confederacy by ChrisLBren - FINISHED - 3/16 Scale
An update ! Ive committed to setting aside an hour a night 5 days a week - and Ive added the fenders and ships ladder. The fenders were tricky to get right - I used an old planking iron to get the correct bend to fit flush with the hull.
After i add the channels, I suppose i need to start thinking about some sort of stand - open to suggestions - Im bummed i didn't predrill the keel to accept rods so i can use brass pedestals.
