Progress Update....
So let's see how has all the new work is coming together aboard ship....
Compared to the port side, I'm pretty pleased with the subtle improvements incorporated into the starboard ornamentation.
Note the fine scroll art from the Christmas bow.... makes a very nice enhancement huh?
Here's how she looks now....
Note:
I am going to take a break from the carvings and castings for a while in order to begin installing some of the twenty eight deck cannons that will require full rigging detail.... breaking that formidable task into several sessions, as well as the treenailing of the bamboo hull planks.

New scroll work technique.....
I find myself ever looking for unique scroll work that will work with this model. Many of what I find just does not fit the scale. By pure accident, while casting more of the many little seahorse and dolphin figures, I noticed that the liquid plastic could be poured onto glass in very thin lines and creating very interesting random patterns.
Although some of the patterns could be cut out and used, the scale was still too large for the places I want to use them.
Then I found to be the perfect solution.....
While putting up Christmas decorations with the admiral, I came across a tree ornament that really caught my eye.
The second pic below shows the unique Christmas bow I discovered with very fine string patterns.
On close examination, I found an unlimited source of fine random patterns that can be selectively cut out and applied to the SOS.
Secondly....
Here's a deco wine bottle with a metal casting that caught my eye. After removing the two-piece casting, I created a mold from the center piece to produce the beautiful sculpting you see. I'm sure this will fit somewhere into the stern ornamentation, when I get to that point.
The larger casting also has several great patterns I will play around with.
Fun stuff huh?

Bob....Your work makes me want to do her again with no deadline or time constraints. Chuck's Cheerful is a beautiful model, and you are doing an outstanding job. I had to double check to make sure I had not pulled up his log by mistake.

Technique..... Using clip art to create ornamental scroll sculptures.
Long searching and trying several different methods of creating scroll sculptures for the SOS.... I found that I had an excellent solution in my boneyard all along. I had used, but forgot about, the metallic "peel and stick" sheets a few years ago to create the copper plating of the Syren. I searched and found that these can still be purchased online.
The 5 pic collage below illustrates my simple technique for anyone interested....
Pic 1.... The peel and stick sheet.
Pic 2... Sticking the clip art to the sticky side.
Pic 3... Shows a half completed cutout of a clip I am working on.
Pic 4... Dressing the tip of my X-Acto blade for very fine detail trimming.
Pic 5... Mounting the cutout onto blue painters tape for spray painting.
Note: After spray painting, the edges smooth out very nicely. Also, you can add thickness to the painted piece by applying additional coats of metallic paint using careful dabbing with a tooth pick application.

First new carvings....
The fancy scroll wreath around the "CR" is my first carving in over three months. Used one of the clip art pics posted above for the wreath.
Photo's show before and after painting.... (my photography skills still pretty poor).

Plan sheets arrived today - Carta Augusto (Italian Mfg.).... Appear to be very old, maybe 25 or 30 years or more. My friend tells me he has had them forever and doesn't even remember where he got them from. He came across them while looking for something to donate for the April Show in Fayetteville.
Actually, after spending hours going over several really fine build logs posted within MSW, except for the patterns for her keel and frames, I'm not too sure there will be much of these plans I will be using in my build.
The drawings of all the ornamentation do not represent anything like I want to create after reading Bill Short's extensive research.
For the most part, I will be using his interpretation of this ship. Here is his amazing stern creation..... pretty impressive huh?
Here goes nothing! Wish me luck (I'll need all I can get).

Deck planking is now complete. I've done the starboard side, using the same procedures and materials set out in my prior post on deck planking. After sanding and finishing the planking, I touched up the red interior paint, where needed.
To me, this use of curved tapered deck planking was a perfect example of why we should not be afraid to try new things, or do something that may seem too difficult at first glance. Even old dogs can learn some new tricks.
Next will be a variety of items on the outer hull.

It has rained for several days in usually sunny south Florida. Rain means no golf. No golf means more modeling. All of this is a long way to say that I've done a number of items of work on the hull. Included in this list are the opening for the rudder in the transom and the extension of the stern post; the stern gun port lids; the timber heads; the hull steps; the jib outhaul fixed block on the stem; and the scuppers.
All of this work was straightforward and doesn't seem to require explanation. The last photo shows the hull as it looks to this point. I am now working on the channels and waiting for the arrival of brass strip for the chainplates.
