    Dave,
Much has been said on these pages about such manufacturers as AL, Corel and Mamoli and their works of fiction.  Perhaps a list could be done but that's up the readership.

There should be a caveat here on finishing first...  glue doesn't always stick to finishes.  Test first.  You may have to scrape or sand the areas where deck furniture will be glued down.

On glue, I've tended to use almost nothing but Titebond wood glue (although I'm using quite a lot of CA - Zap-A-Gap medium on the stuff I'm working on right now) so far.  If you get a nice thin coating on both pieces and let them tack up just a little, it grabs quite nicely in just a couple of minutes as long as the pieces don't have lots of tension on them requiring long term clamping.

Glue seems to be one area where everyone has different preferences, but the consensus that I've picked up here is that as long as whatever you are using works well for you, then it's the "right" glue to use.

My cannon barrel arrived as promised. I can now continue with that part of my build.

PS. That was what Mr Wright told me when I waited for my deck sheet to arrive (5 weeks). The first sheet must have gotten lost or held up at customs. He will send another, which fortunately for me arrived 3 weeks later.

I did finally get an e-mail reply last week.

They said they only got one e-mail from me, not the four I sent. Nevertheless, my cannon barrel is on the way to me, so all's well that ends well.

thought you might like to know that I have just sent a message to John Wright at Caldercraft/ JoTiKa regarding some of our members difficulties. I have known John for many years & I told him I am personally concerned over this.I hope I haven't overstepped the mark, but it may do some good . I will let you all know when I get a reply. All the best, Geoff

    Chris,

It's basically boiling down to: "It's your ship.  You are the Captain.  Do it your way".  Treenail seems to one of the more "emotional" topics around here with "yes", "no", "do it this way", "do it that way".   There really is no right or wrong way as far as method nor are they mandatory.

Speaking of making very small diameter treenails you might want to consider using bamboo.  Bamboo can be draw down to very small diameter without breakage.  May not be worth the effort but it can be done.

Treenails are not always invisible. I recently took a heap of photos of the Endeavour Replica which lives at the Australian Maritime Museum in Sydney. It is one of the most accurate maritime replicas in existence. The treenails were quite noticeable.

I did some calculations for the size of a treenail using the diameter of the actual treenail on this replica as a guide. In reality the treenails were about  34mm in diameter. Using the trusty modelscaler app on my phone this came out as about  0.5mm on a 1:64 scale model. This is visible. However, on a model any smaller than 1:64 I think it would be too difficult to make treenails small to be in scale and they would be practically invisible even if you managed it.

Due to the one size fits all attitude of mass production, another point worth considering, in my opinion, is that in some cases the actual deck planks provided with some kits are out of scale.

I agree with Joe and Geoff as far as the way to do it.  As far as whether to do it I think Bill Hime is right--if you can't get it too look right don't bother.  No one will look at your deck and say "mmm no trenails" but they could well look at it and say "what a crummy job on the trenails."

Hooray!!!!!! Just checked my mailbox and my missing Caldercraft HMS Supply parts have finally arrived. Didn't take quite as long as The First Fleet to make the journey ....... But still 3 months is a bit much! Next to the part in the mailbox was a box set of DVD's - also shipped from England. It took exactly one week from the time it was ordered to arrive!!! Go figure???

I rest my case. What hogwash!!! How many people send an email without filling in the subject box. Especially when it is addressing an important issue like the ones raised on this thread. What about the phone calls? People have made these as well with no result. Does he have a spam folder for phone calls too?

there's no real answer to this one, I think this way. Take a 1" diameter treenail, reduce it to 1/64", (a common model shipbuilding scale) & then ask yourself  "Is it really worth it"? The other side of the coin is that some models look spectacular with a treenailed deck , or hull. It's all down to personal taste really. Hope that helps, a bit!

I'm sure I read somewhere that Chuck described this method? I intend to try it on some scrap before committing it to my next model. Endeavour hopefully!!

One thing I've learned from hours of studying the builds on this site is that there is a right way and a wrong way to do treenails. Not so much in the technique used, dowel or filler, but in placement. The pattern, size and consistency, seems to define the aesthetic success of the application.

    Warm regards,

You 'nailed it' Geoff.  Time spent making samples before committing to a full deck or hull is well spent.

That's the way I do it Joe.  Except I use a small drill bit (perhaps a #75 on a 1:64) to insure consistency of the holes.  Yes, it needs to be very subtle below 1:48 scale.

I checked my other two kits - the Endeavour and the Bounty, they were al present and accounted for. Given the comments expressed in this thread, I should
consider myself lucky. It's a shame because, in my opinion, the kits themselves are quite good value for money. Maybe it is a case of a company getting too big and being unable to keep up with demand. I hope they read this thread and realise that potentially thousands of model builders will as well. It may encourage them to lift their game!!!!
