_SalD_ got a reaction from dashi in US Brig Syren by _SalD_ – FINISHED - 3/16" scale
Finishing up the hatchways I glued them to the deck along with the shot racks.
The cover boards for the capstan platform were then added between the aft hatch and companionway opening and finally the edge boards around the inside of the companionway were glued in place.
After all the hatches were installed I thought I would add a little 'Dirk bling'. I liked the iron angle pieces he added to the corners of the hatch where the anchor ropes enter the hull so I thought I’d give it a try. Using the spur from the photo-etched parts I made a couple ‘L’ shaped pieces. Next I drilled holes for .5 mm rivets I got from Scale Hardware, blackened all the parts and then very carefully attached them to the coaming. Not too bad but I have to try a little harder to keep the ca glue off the parts

Sal
the coaming corners look great.
The good part about me working so slowly is I get to see how you and the others did parts.

_SalD_ reacted to Dan Vadas in 18th Century Longboat by Dan Vadas - FINISHED - 1:100 scale - BOTTLE - using most of Chuck's Practicum
Thanks Daniel, David, Russell and Greg.
Trust me Russell, this wasn't "manufactured". I'd have finished the whole thing a couple of days ago except for the accident .
We're only on the other side of the world, not on Mars Greg .
Well, so far so good. I've managed to get the jib stay back on and tightened. Also the forestay. The tip of the mast was a real bugger to get back on after doing the other two lines. It took some rather ingenious (if I say so myself ) special tools to help me do it.
From the top, a Q-Tip on a BBQ skewer used for cleaning off glue. A sliver of Scalpel blade super-glued to a skewer for trimming excess line. A piece of bent brass tubing on a handle used for applying glue. A pair of extra-long tweezers made from scrap wood :
Raising the forestay. Another tool I made was a piece of square wood with a "U" filed into the end, used as a push-stick. This holds the mast in position while I pull back on the fishing line attached to the stay. The hair clip holds the line while the glue dries :
I used the Q-tip to hold the top of the mast in position while the glue dried on the repair. The Blue-tack holds the push-stick in place :
And .... I also managed to get the Truck back onto the top of the mast :

_SalD_ got a reaction from canoe21 in US Brig Syren by _SalD_ – FINISHED - 3/16" scale
Update on the planking. Starboard side is complete and only a few more planks to go on the port side. (Phew!! ) One thing I’ve discovered is that even the best laid plans can go awry. After carefully laying out the planking profile for the hull I’ve ended up using a few partial planks at the center of the hull. I didn’t bother shading the edges of the planks to simulate the caulking since the hull is going to be plated.
Starboard side, not sanded yet. Port side with a few planks left to go.
Bow
I’ve also started planking the counter. Planks around the tuck look a little ragged but they should clean up okay with the final sanding.
On a separate note, I’ve always had a hard time keeping a square edge on the little pieces of wood that I sand. To help me do a better job I made a little disc sander for my dremel flex-extension with some scrap pieces of wood. I made a holder that the end of the extension sits in and is clamped in place. For the disc I used a cap from a vitamin bottle and cut out round pieces of sandpaper, of different grit, held in place with double sided tape. Now I can sand the ends square or at an angle using different drafting triangles.
