Well, as promised in my new member introduction, I will start a build log for my first attempt at ship modelling. I chose the Gunboat William after plenty of deliberation, but a couple of things made me think it might be suitable. It seems fairly simple and straightforward with not too much rigging etc. But most appealing to me was its size. At 1:32 scale I'm hoping everything is much larger than on many of the models often recommended as a first choice. The main disadvantage I could see was that no complete build logs exist on MSW so I will be 'flying solo' and needing plenty of help and guidance as I progress! The manuals/instructions are excellent and I have found an excellent review written by Keith Julier in the March 2006 Model Boats magazine which will help no end. My progress will be slow and my first couple of posts will be 'catch up' as I started about ten months ago. As seems customary, I will first post a couple of photos of the box and contents.
Cheers, Jack

I have the pin pusher for the 7 mm brads. I have the 10 mm brads as well......but so far, I've used them for levers and dash buttons, since they have a visible head on them. the 7 mm do well for small bolts and rivets on particular pieces of deck furniture.

I've seen a lot of things on ships that make me question how and why they are the way they are. I guess function was always the greater concern over comfort ease for the sailors.
Your ship sure is looking good!

I do the same. I've been using a lot of the same nails for years though a lot of them got turned into hinge pins on my current build.

Antony....... Thanks for stopping by ..... glad you liked the deck ... I just used Age it Easy , not the exact color I wanted but close. I have some driftwood ageing I might try on my next build , forgot I even had it or I would have used it on this one.
Hi Mark..... Thanks for that input... I see now what they are used for, but don't you think they still are in an awkward set up , blocking access to the bow??
Carl......... Vivian's build is just awesome!!! I forgot all about hers, thanks for reminding me, and you are right , Mark was correct in his reply. Thanks again.
Hey Denis........ Yeah the deck is getting real busy, that's why I'm thinking about omitting those two winches adjacent to the main mast. May be I'll just substitute some cargo pieces, at least there will be access to the bow. thanks again for your input.

Nice
That deck looks like it's really matured with age

On my first build I blackened all the tiny PE hooks (20 of them I think) in one go. I spread them on the cutting mat and took a cup of coffee. Then I forgot all about them and cleaned up the workspace. The next day I discovered I had brushed them all in the garbage while cleaning.... My kids learned a lot of so called powerful language that day. I had to order new from England and wait 10 days for them...

TopMast Trestle & Cross Trees
Cross Trees
Hand carved from larger section, kept in place with rods at each end(tip from Greg Lester)
Decided to glue the Trestles and Cross pieces as one(1) unit - they are fairly small.
All pieces are checked into each other.
Eack will slide as one unit down the top-mast heads onto the top of the hounds(Hex).
Tip Dave: don't glue the caps on yet !
TopMast Trees
Made the caps(same as the lower ones, only smaller(much smaller), but with out pins)
Fit snug onto the topmasts.
Bolsters either side glued in place.
Tapered ends and a hole on end cross tree.
Be a shame to paint these black. ?
Maybe not ?
Now to a sheave issue or maybe not.
The top mast sections have some sheaves built into them. Different sizes.
I've only managed to get 2.5mm and 4mm diameter x 1mm wide sheaves.
But not sure if I should use them ?
The Mizzen Topmast being a small diameter, can be weakened by the tunneling through to create a sheave recess. So for now I cut a recess either side and a hole top/bottom(for rope to pass through).
How does this look ? Maybe add a pencil led either side for shaft ?
Same for the bottom of the topmasts.
Although a larger diameter, once in place, not used.
Just noticed >> fid holes and pins to make.
Next to make the thin !! topgallant masts, this will be interesting.

Little UPDATE time....... pretty much finished up with the deck pieces....... wasn't to pleased with the wood used for the deck pieces, but
I wasn't about to make all new ones....... I do have a question that maybe some one out there might be able to answer ... in the following shots I'll point out what I'm talking about when we come to it... thanks for look'n in....
Frank
Rudder completed and attached
Tiller finished
capstan installed.... I didn't fully rig the guns, just a simulation
hoops formed for the poop deck cover
This picture is what I have a question for ... does any one know what it's function is.... there are a few of these on the deck
This picture shows two of the previous pictures piece. the way these two pieces are set up on the deck
leaves no room for the crew to get to the bow of the ship, I cant imagine them trying to climb over these. take a look........
Now this is without them.. seems they could move about a little better without them.
Thanks again for look'n in.....

Hi Dave
Yes I there is room for the rudder etc. I think the construction of yours and mine will be different as they are from different manufacturers. Mine called for two strengthening pieces to be fitted either side of the keel at the stern end. Then they tell you to file out the space in between the strengtheners. I did it differently be cutting the piece out of the keel then fitting the strengtheners with the appropriate gap in between them. Awkward as most of the stern is built before it's mentioned.
You can just see the slot in between the two center strengthening pieces in the center of where the transom will be

Oh no! You mentioned rigging! You will get me rushing! I don't believe I will add sails, as that would mean I would need some very fine cloth, a sewing machine, more rigging line, and, most of all, no instructions. I do plan on adding sails next build, but that is thinking way too far ahead. I have to admit, after going sailing a little over a week ago, I am looking forward to rigging. Maybe I should go see Dr. Per. Is Indy 500 a race?
