Hi Rowan, Lovely to see your build. I am currently doing a kit build of the Endeavour (Constructo 1:60), and have reached the stage where I start on all the deck fittings and rigging. Quite a challenge and lots to work out, as plans need to be researched and carefully reviewed and interpretations implemented. Enjoying it though. Look forward to following your progress. Best regards.

Progress to September 2013. Many interruptions.... like relocating to a new workroom and having to set out all the workspace and build benches! On the road again, thankfully!

Donny reacted to jud in Dremal Power Tool
Have had Dremel for years. Somewhere I obtained a larger chuck, so have the one that came with it and a larger one. I rarely use the burs, when I do I use the flexible shaft. As was mentioned, if I need anything other than free hand precision a stand and some sort of 3 axis moving table to hold the work would be needed, I don't have a setup like that but do have a mill. Have used the cut off tool the most for rivets and small bolts. Have also used it with small drill bits for making hidden stitching holes for Cheyenne Rolls on saddles, it worked but tended to burn the bits, I went back to using awls. Was told to buy the more expensive dremel that used roller bearings in the motor, bought the 395 type 4 with bearings and it is still running fine, should last me as long as I will be wanting it.

You can buy a Dremel, but others on MSW also use Proxxon and Foredom. When purchasing a rotary tool, these are (IMHO) the most important considerations:
- Price. Dremel is the cheapest and most available, Foredom costs the most.
- Chuck diameter. Dremel has the smallest chuck (which limits the size of the tool you can hold). Foredom has the largest.
- Flexible shaft. AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY IMO. This allows you to hold the tool with a pencil grip and saves you from having to wrestle a large tool when performing delicate work. All three systems have flexible shafts as an accessory. With Foredom, you have a choice of many different shafts and heads.
- Tool bits. All accessories are interchangeable between Dremel, Proxxon, and Foredom - with the notable exception that larger diameter shank tools will not fit if your chuck diameter is too small (see point #2). Just because Dremel has the largest and most available selection of tool bits should NOT influence your decision. You can easily use a Dremel tool bit on a Foredom if you so choose.
- Smoothness. Proxxon and Foredom are said to be noticably smoother than Dremel with less rotational eccentricity. Important if you are carving very fine work but not so much if you are using your Dremel as a Drum sander or to cut bits of wood off.
- Foot pedal. Only Foredom has a variable speed foot pedal. This is important because your tool is not rotating when you apply it to the workpiece - increasing your precision. Both Dremel and Proxxon can be adapted with an "on-off" pedal, but this does not give you the ability to adjust speed using foot pressure.
I have a Dremel and I am happy with it. Good luck with your choice.

I think this bench was recommended back with MSW 1.0. Is anyone using this? I don't have the equipment (or inclination) to make my own, but thought that this could be a good option.

Hi All,
The Endeavour has been in and out of dry dock, mostly in though but I have been tinkering with bits and pieces but not managed to make any real progress that is worthy of a photo. I'm re-working some of the stern. I didn't like the look of the little changes I made and decided to fix them up so I'm about a quarter of the way through getting back to where I was a while ago, if that makes sense. Mean while, I've taken up full-time work and that's taken up quite a bit of my free time thus the in and out of dry dock. Sorry for the slow updates but we'll get there. In the mean time, I'm enjoying watching the amazing progress on your builds, happy modelling and stay well.
Cheers,
Rowan D.

Rowan,
Every picture is one !!!!
Maybe that you are thinking that a little progress is not worth a picture but I know for sure that you are alone with that....
So please, even when there is a little progress, pictures please !!!!!!

Donny reacted to AON in what is the ideal modelling table?
I managed to get quite a bit done this weekend as the following photos will show.
01 drilling holes in legs - using the sticky back templates provided with the mechanism made this step considerably easier
02 wiring - ran wiring to each of the three electrical boxes
03 wiring - installed the plugs and plates; had to run out to Home Hardware to get a 3 prong plug for the end of the feed wire as the one I thought I had seems to have walked away.
04 mounting legs - everything lined up perfectly; I used socket head cap screws and a flat washer to give me some additional bearing surface area against the wooden leg so when torquing the screws they would crush into the wood a little less
05 laying out mechanism - It was a bit tight as I hadn't allowed for the electrical outlet boxes in my plan; had to skew things to fit
06 securing mechanism - they had provided tie down straps for the tubing (these screwed to the table but no screws were provided); wiring cable sticky back holing slips were provided but I was uncomfortable applying these to the wafer board as I wasn't confident they would hold so I used the extra cable straps. They had provided two screws for the control buttons but I could only use one on each as the other hole was under my frame.
07 table down - this is as far as I was able to go with the assembly
08 table up - raises 15-3/8 inches (390.5 mm) from 30-1/8" to 45-1/2" (767 mm to 1156 mm) in 24 seconds. The lowering was uneven as the far side did not have adequate weight on the cylinders. I placed the model table tops on the table and added a bit more weight and tested again and it all worked fine. When I complete the table assembly it should have enough weight to it.
09 table - a shot of the table with the modelling half placed on top
I will not be able to make the frame for the modelling half for another week as my son has borrowed the cut-off and circular saws for the re-modelling of his home. This will allow me to concentrate on my ship modelling - establishing the rabbet line. I have taken a quad-zillion measurements off the plans and have been plotting them out in my 3D model.
Hope to be posting there again soon.
