You are doing a fine job on the planking Mike, I think the scale of the planks looks just fine.

Planking is still going. I'm pleasantly surprised that the planking has worked out and is even at the sides of the openings since the planking isn't quite uniformed in width.

Since you have the kits Tom, I wouldn't hesitate. So far a pleasure to work with.

I put the stern castle section together this afternoon but I haven't glued it down just yet because I wanted to check fit and finish before committing. Now on to planking that upper deck.

I got a little planking done on the top deck, but it still just doesn't seem to be the right size planking for this size ship.
I now kind of wish that I had replaced the deck planking which is 1mmx3mm strips to maybe 1mmx4mm strips. But, maybe it will grow on me.
But with planking this small, there will not be any need to really go crazy about detailing because it will not be that noticeable.
But we'll see on that issue.

Per, in an earlier post [now deleted] you described an issue you had with a photo processing lab's clerk refusing to print digital images from a memory card you had, even tho the photos were your own.

My Pentax DSLR has a feature that will store a Copyright in the Properties section of the digital image, it clearly shows the word COPYRIGHT followed by my name.  See if your digital camera has that feature; some of the smaller point-and-shoot digital cameras do not have it {my Canon Powershot is one]. It will prevent a similar issue in the future. The information stays with the digital image even when transferred from camera to computer or Thumb-drive.

Don't care who you are, copyright protection should never exceed the effort and expense that the holder has placed into making a claim of protection. Really think the word copyright, will have any meaning more than ego when everyone has those words or a symbol automatically placed on everything they do. Reaches a point where it becomes graffiti. Making the effort required to obtain a patent, the same for obtaining a copyright that is in recorded in the public record, should provide defensible protection for a period of 20 years, no longer. Does not take long for anything that is overdone to become useless, so change the laws so copyrighting is more than just hoping for a windfall or a method of saying hooray for me. Been shot at and had rocks thrown at me, 'let the games begin', my opinion on this matter is embedded.

If you didnt create it....you have no claim to it .....and you shouldnt profit from it.  If you want to use it...you must pay the person who created it or ask their permission to use it...simple rules in society.   Period

Unless you reach out to the creator, and make amends for not having the skills or creativity to think it up yourself.  Otherwise its no different than you breaking into my home and stealing from me.    Those people are called parasites and thieves with small brains unable to innovate on their own.   I personally loathe these self-serving, greedy individuals...

...and anyone who thinks otherwise because they might be too cheap to pay for the original or two lazy to ask permission....the willingness to support these parasites is just as bad.....and the law is not on their side thank heavens...at least not in this country...you could however move to China.

Locking this because its just going round and round.....and remember, even though we do have international members on this forum, it is based in the good ole U. S. of A.

I have used it to plank a hull with and thought the contrast was beautiful. It's about the same as most other woods to work with that I have found. But I bought some wood planks about an inch thick and 4-5 inch wide and about 4 feet long and cut them down with a table saw and thickness planer to get the desired plank size I needed.

mtdoramike reacted to PugetIsland in Buying an Expensive Kit and throwing most of it away
After reading this post from front to back, I find myself a little annoyed at the naivety some assume we have. So here is my rant.
I get what the original post was asking. Why spend a lot of money on a kit only to throw most of it away. It only keeps the costs up of the kit, as it is now plays into the supply and demand aspects of economics not the design and manufacturing. This makes it difficult for others to justify getting into or staying in the hobby as the costs of the kits are getting out of hand. Especially if on a fixed income, as it seems most that are into this hobby are retirees or close to that age. I get that business are in it to make a living, but why try and recover your start up costs (design and manufacturing) in 1st few kits? Why not keep the costs down (spreed costs out over more kits) and get new blood into the hobby and sell more than a few kits a year. The amount of lumber in a kit is not that much. Unless your hand cutting every piece, time spent on cutting it is not as much as being portrayed. Handling it to clamp it in a CNC cutting machine take little time and can cut several kits a day.
As for kits that have been around for years and have already recouped their start up cost this applies to them especially. I seen a comment that sellers usually have a 20%-50% mark up....I have to say it is a lot more than that. I recently was looking at several large Occre kits that vendors were selling at 100%-300% percent mark up. I found that I could buy them directly from Occre for a lot less. Take the Occre Santísima Trinidad, directly from Occre after exchange rate is about $320.00 + S/H while at a large online hobby store it's $709.00 + S/H and another $899.00.....that"s 100%-300% mark up. I was able to buy 2 different large kits for the price of 1. Kit prices have become way over priced for what you get, and lost a lot of potential customers and some old ones. I've seen here too that a certain Chinese company is forbidden on here because they are selling knock offs of existing kits at a cheap price. Well I bought the "Black Pearl" kit and have to say it's right there with the same quality as some major kit manufacturers and would not be surprised if they were contracted by them to manufacture their kits for them and the Chinese also repackaged some those kits as their own.
WoodyJoe's a Japanese company is selling old large scale ships that were originally made by IMAI. So where is the justification for the design aspect of the kit cost on theirs? Unfortunately what they sell they are the only suppliers of so they demand a premium price for what you get in similar models.
To the old heads here that are on a fixed income, with the use of "Google Translator" and a bit of patients on the internet, you can find those ships you are looking for for a more affordable price.

There should always be a banner posted on any open forum regarding copyrighted or protected material. People tend to think just because something is posted on the internet, it makes it open season, but it does not, especially when you start quoting people copying and pasting articles and so forth. We like it here and don't want any trouble so's you's guys need to knock it off and either create your own or don't bother.

Craig, on the AL version of the Vic, both upper and lower gun ports closest to the bow are closed off with no cannon mounted in them.
There wasn't even guns furnished enough to configure those gun ports. Now if you intend to use them, I would suggest figuring that out now before you get her planked
and add re-enforcement for the dummy barrels if your kit supplies them.

Here is a picture to show what I did. Also thank you for the kind words, it is a bucket list wish that came true for me.
Like I told the Library, there was no nobility here at all, just completing a wish that I had made to myself

We are at the end of a long journey and the Victory has finally taken to sail and made it to her home port without incident I might add. I made sure and rode in the back of the pickup all the way to the Library, which was only about 2 miles, but nail biting miles they were. I felt every little bump in the road, even though I told my son in law not to drive over 10 miles an hour. But it seems not even what you thought was a smooth road really isn't that smooth when moving something so fragile. They had a few guys from the City come by my house to help load it up and then met us at the library to unload and set her up. The news papers were there and will do a press release. But thankfully there wasn't a lot of fan fair or fuss made about it, I wasn't wanting that and I'm glad the City respected my wishes. Like I told the library Coordinator that my gester wasn't all that noble, I just have always wanted to build a large Victory model, but had no where to display it. So now I can come by and enjoy it any time I want.

By the way, I'm now building the OcCre Montanes, which is the same size as the Victory, so I will be ordering another display case from Abordage. This time I will have to add in the display lighting kit to accompany the display case. I think it's like $100.00 more for the lighting.

ps: I'm hoping that some nice person or company will step up and donate the display case so that I won't have to be out of pocket for that as well as the actual model and the time involved in building it. We'll have to see how that goes. But this will more than likely be my last model unless I can find a Sovereign of the Seas kit that someone is willing to part with for around $500.00 or so. That might tempt me into building another.

Yeah and even though $900.00 sounds steep, by the time you buy the wood which will probably be either poplar or red oak if bought from your local hardware store like Lowes or Home Depot and then the Plexiglass, it would have cost me close to $650.00-$700.00. So once I found Abordage and their quoted price of $900.00 for a case that size which included almost $200.00 for shipping cost was a no brainer especially when I could get mahogany. I would not hesitate to buy another one from Abordage.
