Piet reacted to Tallshiptragic in STS Leeuwin II by Tallshiptragic - FINISHED - 1/250 scale
Once the sails were completed, I made up the flags on printed paper also. Then came the ships boats. These I made up quite simply with thin plastic card to represent the two ships dorys on the waist and the rescue boat hung astern.

The water was painted with a mixture of blues to represent the colour typical off the coast here in Fremantle. To show as much of the fine rigging, she was modeled at anchor so the sails would be furled. For these I used tissue paper soaked in watered down PVA glue.

Standing rigging added, it was time to place the model on her base. For this I used an mdf plaque board from an arts supply store. Forgot to mention this was always going to be a waterline model. For the water I used bathroom sikaflex with the help of a spatula to form the waves.

Deck furniture and housings were made up with various plastic strip pieces and sanded down to shape. Rails on the bow and stern added with plastic melted sprue. The rigging was started with the standing rigging also. For this I used fine wire from insulated electrical wires. These are hair thin and using three strands wound with a hand drill to make up lengths of rope. The standing rigging on the real ship is all steal cable so this model is actually more accurate than my larger build in this respect.

Hull and deck painted and all three masts added. The yellow frieze at the bows stern and yellow stripe along the rubbing strake added.

The entire hull was then coated in tamiya putty and sanded smooth. More plastic half round strip used for the rubbing strake and wood and plastic dowel for the bowsprit and masts.

Using the ships plans I have scaled down, I started by carving out the hull using Jelutong. Once I had the hull carved to shape I used plastruc wood simulated sheet for her decks - the simulated planks at 1mm - scale wise too large however for its purpose I think it was perfect. Again using plastic strip I built up the hulls gunwale and stem.

For 5 years I worked and sailed on the STS Leeuwin II as a permanent ships officer and during this time I began building a 1/56 scale scratch built model. This model is about 90% complete though lost momentum with work load and personal life. The crew I worked with knew and have seen the model I was building so when the then CEO of the Leeuwin foundation announced she was moving on, they all thought what a great leaving gift to have but a model. So with limited amount of time 1month I agreed and thought a small miniature would be ideal as a desktop display and easy enough to build in the time. The STS Leeuwin II is a purpose built barquentine launched in 1986 with sole funding by private West Australians as Western Australians first and only sail training vessel for our youth. Last year marked her 30th anniversary and she is still sailing strong.
This model Del is long finished and while my first small scale miniature I was reasonably happy. Needless to say the CEO and crew were overly happy

Martin,
thank you very much for your kind appreciations and your words....
I`m quite pleased with the production results of KWdG`s lifeboats, that task was saved up for one of the last larger sequences, with the (for me new) resin casting methode.....
There is still a bit of rigging to be done with the masts and the cargo derricks, the radio arial wires between the masts, and paint touchups. Of course not to forget the custom taylored glass casing...

Hi Nils -- What an astonishing array of models! And what's most impressive is the wide range of styles, from the 18th-century Pegasus, to the racing yachts like Bluenose and America, to the working boats, and that amazing KWdG. Whew! You could fill an entire museum with your own builds.
And I also want to say that your picture of the KWdG showing all boats up on the top deck is fabulous -- I simply love the view of the boat lining up along the rail.
Cheers,
Martin

Hi Craig,
Thanks for your vote of confidence. My total card modelling experience is here on this site but I will definitely help where I can and feel free to message as you need.
Don't forget Chris ( ccoyle) who is the resident card guru who I picked up most of my techniques from and I am sure he will drop in once you start your log. I advise going through his tutorial in the card section also.
RE laser cut details, I haven't used them so can't fully answer your question. I know Chris is a fan and I believe they are easier to work with particularly things like railings. I went with photo etch as I assumed they would be finer especially things like gratings etc.
Good luck and looking forward to following along.
Cheers

Captain Slog
I'm probably going to depend quite a bit on your experience with card models to build something like this (will review your build threads for tips) and may need to message you even to do a review. Having no experience with card models, wouldn't know whether the features of it were good, bad, or indifferent.
The one thing I do recall from your advice was to buy a kit with laser cut frames, which I did. What about laser cut details such as railings and ladders. Are they okay, or is photo etch preferable?

I would be the last person to judge someone diving in at the deep end, go with what interests you is my mantra. I look forward to a review of it and I hope you do a build log when you start it.
Cheers

I think they are supposed to represent binoculars, but not a very convincing replica IMHO. Will probably order some 3 dimensional ones rather than fool around with these.

I'm pretty sure I bought something that will be quite a challenge for a first card model. Maybe over extended myself? It's the 1:200 USS Oakland, a WW2 light cruiser with a lot of twin 5" gun turrets. An anti aircraft platform to be sure.

They're not MG stands/brackets? I agree on too small, sometimes it's just a bit too gimmicky to produce a .1mm x .1mm thing and even expect it to stand out yet alone be able to be glued.

Nice progress Craig.
Time to move up to 1/200 scale with the card models. Looking forward to seeing what ones you got.

I think these photo etch parts represent some type of sight devices, but no books I have give reference to what exactly they are. Anyone know for sure?
One thing I do know, the parts represent the extreme edge of what I can see to work with. Using magnification, begin to lose my depth perception making the pieces difficult to position. I believe these are perhaps the smallest parts on the photo etch sheets. Any smaller and I will not attempt it. No point really, as I would not be able to see it after the model is finished even if I could.

Thank you for the kind words. The pigment used in this particular instance is made by Vallejo, product 73.117, rust oxide. The Vallejo line of pigments are stocked at my local hobby shop, but you can easily find it on line as well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vallejo-Pigments-Pigment-73-117-RUST-30ml-Bottle-Weather-Armor-/321583741959
It adheres well to a painted surface but I cover the model with a clear matt varnish once everything is finished. Repeated handling could potentially smear the pigment to places unintended without a clear coat afterward.
Is the Java a resin kit?

Thanks to all that clicked the like button and to Craig, John, Carl, Greg, Ken, JesseLee and Denis for your kind words.
Yes Denis, I believe that Boris Mulenko from Pacific Crossroads deserves all the credit for being able to supply so much detail at this scale. I only put the parts together to make it look presentable.
Cheers,
