Good news for those who have been waiting for us to get restocked on Vanguard Models products! Shipment arrived this week, so just about everything is back in stock, including Sherbournes, Adders, Flirts, Speedys, Indefatigables, and more. Most importantly, we have the new HM Brig Harpy in stock! Probably not necessary for us to tell you that this is an amazing kit. I think everybody here knows that already. Apologies for those looking for the Sphinx or Duchess of Kingston. We ran out of those while waiting for this shipment. A reorder of those kits, plus the couple of ships boat kits are in the works now. Roger

Kit review USS Missouri (BB 63) - OcCre -1:200
AgesOfSail replied to Kevin's topic in REVIEWS: Model kits
FYI, we have a number of these kits available now, ready to ship. Note that this also qualifies for free domestic shipping (all orders of $150 or more). https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/new-items/uss-missouri-bb-63-(occre,-1-200).html In any case, it's a very nice looking kit. Hope to see some build logs soon! -
Johnathan, just wanted to chime in about your build. It's looking really great! You'd commented that you were thinking about how to paint the ship's bottom. But, I'm just wondering if you'd thought about leaving it natural. I know that makes it a little more decorative rather than "by the book", but your model's wood finish is looking so nice. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Which Soleil Royal, Sergal or Artesania Latina?
AgesOfSail replied to Ryk's topic in Wood ship model kits
I don't have any specific experience building these kits, but since we carry both kits in our shop, this kind of question does come up. Generally speaking, many people do like the classic kits, like the Serial Soleil Royale, and I've seen many beautifully done builds over the years. I think there's a certain mindset that appreciates these classic kits. They use various woods, and brass and wooden parts to affect a certain aesthetic in the final appearance of the model. I think the kit's value this aesthetic over scale and accuracy. The Artesania Latina kit is a modern era kit, and it relies less on using wood varieties for the final finish, and more on painting, or perhaps staining, for a finish, but probably is better in terms of a scale look. A major difference is that the newer Artesania Latina kits feature very detailed instructions, but don't provide any printed instructions or plan drawings. You need computer to view the instructions, as they're only in digital form. If you really want, you should be able to download them and print them out, if you don't mind printing a few hundred pages, but you'll still lack the nice, big printed plans sheets that many of us rely on. The Sergal instructions are very much "old school", with almost no written instruction. These kits rely on the use of several large, folded sheets of line drawings to guide you through the build. These require more interpretation skills, ability to measure from drawings, and definite a good amount of wooden ship modeling experience. As Eric comments, in either case, make sure you have some ship modeling experience before taken on either of these. -
Absolutely beautiful. This is a very inspirational build. Thank your for sharing your construction methods. I hope you don't mind if we share your build log with our customers. Sharing the link, at least.

Hello Everyone, We just wanted to let folks know that we are still open for business and shipping regularly in this odd reality of the COVID-19 outbreak. As we posted on our own blog last week, while we are taking measures to keep both employees and customers safe, we shut down our showroom to the public. Also, while we have a very large inventory of kits, fittings, and supplies, some imported items are running low or are out of stock. Given the problems in Europe, we're expecting it may be some time before we get some of these shipments in. Fortunately, we've recently added a number of products to our inventory recently, which you might be interested in checking out if you're looking for your next project. These include: Shipyard's Laser-Cut Kits: Hanse Kogge - Bremen, 1380 Wütender Hund Kogge Kolderstok Kits: De Zeven Provencien Batavia Duyfken Statenjacht Exploration ship of Willem Berentz Master Korabel Kits: Schooner Polotsk - Plus Edition Brig Phoenix - Plus Edition St. Gabriel Tender Avos - Special Edition Cannon Jolle Double Boat Secret Vessel Morel We're also working on getting the new wooden kits from Shipyard, but this may take several weeks to process and ship. Unfortunately, some of the most popular kits right now, OcCre's Essex and HMS Beagle kits, are out and we're just about to run out of HMS Terror kits. But we have a very good stock of Billing Boats, Caldercraft, Constructo, Corel, Disar Model, Mantua, Nordic Class Boats, other OcCre kits, Turk Model kits, and others. Plus, of course, we have tons of Amati, including all the kits of the Victory Models line. Hopefully, the situation will be back to normal soon. Until then, please stay safe!

Hello folks, exciting news for us! Ages of Sail is now carrying the line of 17th century Dutch wooden ship model kits from Kolderstock of the Netherlands. We're pretty excited about being able to provide these kits here in the U.S. and abroad. The Kolderstok Line of Kits Batavia Duyfken Statenyacht The Expedition Ship of Willem Barentsz Zeven Provinciën, Flagship of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter These kits are designed for experienced ship modelers: The aim of Kolderstok is to offer a high quality range of wooden model boat kits for ships not available elsewhere. Models of famous ships of the Dutch Golden Age, such as those belonging to the VOC (Dutch East India Company), but also ships famous for the great battles in which they served. Ships under the command of well-known names: Michiel de Ruyter, Marten Harpenszoon Tromp, Jan and Cornelis Evertsen and Adriaen Banckert. Kolderstok models are created using old images and existing models as guidelines, thus ensuring the best possible accuracy. Kolderstok kits consist of laser-cut keel, frames and decks, planking for the hull and decks, masts, yards, rigging and a full set of hand-cast resin ornaments. The ornaments will need a finishing touch. Sail kits are available as a separate kit for the ship model kits that do not already include them. Sail kits include necessary material, instructions, blocks, and belaying pins to mount them. They are not pre-sewn. Note that there are optional cannon sets for a couple of these kits. We have these on order from the manufacturer, and they should be available shortly. For a limited time, we're offering the kits at 10% off our regular pricing. Check them out at Ages of Sail: https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/kolderstok.html

We haven't posted here in a while, but have a big savings announcement for all you fans of Amati Models. Ages of Sail has been in discussion with Amati about distribution and pricing and have negotiated a more competitive pricing structure, which allows for some major savings on all Amati kits, including their popular Victory Models line. All Amati kits we sell have been reduced in price – many have seen a BIG reduction. This is not a sale, it's our new regular pricing. Here are some examples: AM570 Coca was $129, now $111.95; $18.05 drop! AM1300/09 Fifie was $289, now $263.95; $25.05 drop! AM1406/01 Viking Drakkar was $179, now $108.99; $70.01 drop! AM1427 Xebec was $279, now $163.95; $115.05 drop! AM1606 Titanic was $799, now $411.95; $387.05 drop!!! You read those right. I don't know if the owner here went crazy and will discover it eventually, but for now the prices are greatly reduced. This is not a sale – these are new prices. Again, these are just the Amati Model kits only, with new shipments coming in regularly. Check out the Amati products on Ages of Sail here: https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/amati-kits.html And, if you're a fan of the Victory Models line (designed by Chris Watton), you're not going to want to miss checking out the new lower Ages of Sail pricing here: https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/amati-kits/victory-models.html

Happy 4th of July MSW! To celebrate, we're offering 10% off on selected OcCre kits: HMS Terror, HMS Beagle and, for those who want a non-ship model project for a change, the San Francisco Cable Car. You can see photos of the Terror and the Beagle in earlier posts, so I'll just add the 1/24-scale San Francisco Cable Car kit photo here. HMS Beagle and HMS Terror regularly sell for $209, so for a limited time, you can get them for only $188 each. The San Francisco Cable Car is on special for $170. The prices are discounted on our website, so there's no need to include any special codes to get them. Here are links to each of these kits: HMS Beagle HMS Terror San Francisco Cable Car These prices are good through Monday, July 8th.

HMS BEAGLE KITS NOW IN STOCK There were some awfully long delays in getting these kits from OcCre, but we order large quantities at a time, so perhaps OcCre wasn't quite ready for us. In any case, they are here at long last! Thank you to all who were patiently waiting for your pre-orders, they have all been shipped and you should be receiving them shortly. This is listed by OcCre as a low difficulty build. The fact that this ship features a square tuck stern should help a lot for those who have a bit of trouble with planking those tight curves. But, we're pretty sure that the deck details and rigging will offer plenty of challenge to more experienced builders. You can order yours or check out the details at the following link: https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/hms-beagle-(occre-1:60).html
-
Thanks for everyone's patience. These kits should be coming in soon. OcCre seems to have taken longer to get our order together. Perhaps they weren't expecting us to order such a large quantity at one time, but it saves us on shipping costs. We're hoping these arrive this week, along with a replenishment of our supply of HMS Terror kits – we're down to our last one!

Just got the exciting word today that our shipment of OcCre's new HMS Beagle kits is on its way. And, while it IS a little dramatic, here's OcCre's release video... OcCre's HMS Beagle is a 1/60-scale kit that's based on the 1825 refit of the 10-gun Cherokee-class brig. To celebrate, we're offering a discounted pre-order of the new kits. Order now and get a 10% discount. The regular price will be $209, so you can get yours for $188.10. The order will then ship out as soon as we get them in, which is expected to be about 2 weeks, possibly less. While it may be a bit complex for brand new builders, the pictorial style instructions will help. Plus, OcCre has created a series of short Youtube videos, going over each step of the build process. Check them out here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrPwa5r7zKUzDlhkDF4ztrTc2ag_wVD_a But, of course, most here who watch the videos will probably be experienced enough to question many of the simplified construction techniques shown. To Pre-Order your kit, please go to: https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/hms-beagle-(occre-1:60).html

Just an update on availability and pricing on this kit. We were out of stock for a few weeks and just recently got the new shipment in. However, OcCre had apparently raised prices on the kit to €119.95. We have to cover the cost of shipping them here to the US, so as you might notice, our list prices at Ages of Sail are unfortunately higher. We just adjust pricing to $209 for the regular price on this kit (note that it's now the same price as expected for OcCre's upcoming HMS Beagle kit). However, the owner agreed to a limited offer price break of 10%, so you can get it for $188.10 for limited time. There's no special coupon required. For all those who will be in the San Francisco Bay Area this weekend, MSW member Clare Hess (catopower) will be manning our table at the local IPMS chapter event. The event, called the 2019 Silicon Valley Classic, takes place Saturday, March 16th from 9:00am at Napredak Hall in San Jose. Address is: Napredak Hall, 770 Montague Expressway, San Jose, CA 95131. Here's a web page for the event: http://www.svsm.org/contest/svsm-2019-classic/ Our neighboring table will be manned by the South Bay Model Shipwrights club, which is based out of Los Altos, CA. They'll be talking to folks who might be interested in trying their hand at wooden ship modeling. The group will also be bringing a few models to enter in the judging this year. Entry is open to the public and not restricted to plastic, though 95% of the models there will probably be plastic. This has been a good way for them to reach an interested audience and grow membership, mostly by those who want to try building a wooden ship model, though the model in the case below is a paper model and a couple of the club's members have been building a bit in paper. We don't sell much at these events, but it's good to get out in front of interested people. We also want to show support for the model building community, and to keep nudging people to try building ship models, wood or otherwise. The event usually starts to wrap up shortly after awards are given out, which starts at 3:30pm. Hope to see some of you there!

Yes, HMS Beagle, and a much better representation than the only other wooden kit we're aware of, so we're very excited about it. Still no word on price or release date, but stay tuned. We'll probably be getting a bunch of them as soon as they're available, along with a restock of the popular HMS Terror kits, which have been sold out for a few weeks now (probably doesn't help that the Terror kit sells for only $149.99). Really hoping to get them both in soon! In the meantime, we've just added a big selection of tools to our website from ModelCraft Tools. In addition to the lamps shown earlier, we've restocked everything, and added a mess of new tools. ModelCraft Tools at Ages of Sail

And, while we're at it... Here's a new kit from OcCre of Spain coming down the line. We don't have an exact release date or price on this kit yet, but we're expecting it to show up sometime in March or April. We'll be accepting pre-order for it as soon as we can get shipping weight and price from the manufacturer. We're very excited about this kit, especially since the only other kit of this subject was apparently just a modified HMS Bounty. The kit is made at 1/60 scale and measures a little over 28" long and just under 19" tall. Do you know what it is?

Hello All, While I've posted a separate topic on MSW Specials at Ages of Sail, I decided I'd better revive the idea of posting Ages of Sail news, so I started a new topic here. First off, we have some new task lamps from ModelCraft's LIGHTCRAFT line. One particularly interesting is a portable LED lamp that is rechargeable, so that you can unplug it to put it right where you need some extra light without any power cords to get in the way. It's $30, fully dimmable, includes USB power cord, and is said to run for 3-4 hours on a charge. Edit: This is a product of the modern age, so the USB plug is designed to be plugged into to your computer, or any USB charger that can supply 5V. A power supply is not included, but you can use your computer or USB phone charger. You can find this specific product here: https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/lightcraft-slim-line-led-task-lamp.html We also recently added a couple more task lamps. Below is an 84-LED task lamp that uses only 21 watts – model LC8015LED Below is a twin-tube fluorescent lamp – model LC8011US You can check out this and the other LightCraft products we carry here: https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/catalogsearch/result/?q=lightcraft

For those who are into paper models, Ages of Sail now lists block sets for the 1/96-scale Shipyard paper models. Each set is made for a specific kit and contains all the blocks and deadeyes to complete that kit. These do require some assembly, but come in laser-cut cardboard sheets of blocks. Each sheet makes up one layer of a set of blocks. Single blocks are made up from 3 sheets and double-blocks are made up from 5 sheets. Deadeyes are similarly built-up. Assembled blocks need to be finished by painting or staining/dying. All Shipyard paper model kits include printed blocks, but they have to be laminated and cut out individually. These laser-cut block sets will save time and trouble. Of course, you can always use wooden blocks. But these sets include necessary specialty blocks such as lift blocks, hearts, long tackle blocks, rams head blocks, shoulder blocks, clew garnet blocks, round and triangular deadeyes, and 5-hole deadeyes. Note that we're only carrying these full sets. We do not carry the individual packages of blocks at this time. Check them out here: https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/paper-kits/sails-and-accessories/paper-block-sets.html

I'm going to see if we can get some specials at Ages of Sail posted here for MSW members (or readers). Should have done this long ago! Amati/Victory Models Fifie As you probably know, Amati's Victory Models line recently released a beautiful 1/32 scale kit of a Scottish Fifie fishing boat. We got a shipment of these very big kits in stock and want to get some of these out into the hands of builders with the hopes that we'll see at least one or two build logs in progress. So, we're offering a 10% discount on this kit. Just use coupon code MSWFifie at checkout. You'll get the Fifie for 10% off our $289 list price, but as a bonus, you'll also get anything else in that same order for 10% off. Doesn't matter if you just need to stock up on some supplies, extra fittings, books, or another kit. Coupon good through March 1st, 2019. https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/amati-kits/victory-models/scottish-fife-(amati-1:32).html Not sure? Check out the excellent review by James H: Fifie Reveiw on MSW

Hello from Ages of Sail! We just wanted to let everyone here on MSW know that there is still some remaining original Mamoli stock available. We haven't checked with Daniel Dusek yet on his timeline of release for his Mamoli kits. We have the updated Mini-Mamoli kits he's now producing, and there's a lot of them! But, if you're anxious to build one of these larger sized kits, as you can see, we're running pretty low on them. We've listed some of the more popular kits that we still have in stock, but are running low. When these are gone, that's it. No more until Daniel can do the production on them again. MV19 Roter Lowe x4 MV21 Sao Miguel x5 MV22 Blue Shadown x4 MV24 Friesland x1 MV25 Marseille x3 MV26 America x12 MV29 Il Leudo x4 MV31 USS Constitution x2 MV33 Gretel x2 MV34 Le Gloire x5 MV35 Hunter x5 MV36 Rattlesnake x1 MV37 Halifax x4 MV38 Le Coureur x4 MV40 Royal Louis x2 MV41 Flying Cloud x5 MV45 Portsmouth x4 MV46 Black Prince x2 MV48 Lexington x7 MV49 Mayflower x3 MV43 Puritan x1 MV51 Catalina x5 MV54 Jenny x2 MV56 HMS Victory x2 MV57 Amerigo Vespucci x8 MV59 Swift x9 MV80 Prince x16 MV81 Valliant x11 MV82 Blackbeard x6 If you don't see what you're looking for here, it's either a Mini-Mamoli kit, or it's gone. And, since Mamoli is no more, please keep in mind we can't get replacement parts. This list is correct as of this original posting. We can't guarantee that we'll be able to keep these numbers updated. So, just consider this a snapshot of what we have today. You can always call the shop at 510-889-6000 to check on availability. Visit our shop for pricing at http://www.agesofsail.com Here's a direct link to the Mamoli products: http://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/mamoli.html Thank you! Ages of Sail
