Johnathan, just wanted to chime in about your build. It's looking really great! You'd commented that you were thinking about how to paint the ship's bottom. But, I'm just wondering if you'd thought about leaving it natural. I know that makes it a little more decorative rather than "by the book", but your model's wood finish is looking so nice. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Wow, are you really only one month into this build!? And, such a beautiful job you're doing as well!

I don't have any specific experience building these kits, but since we carry both kits in our shop, this kind of question does come up. Generally speaking, many people do like the classic kits, like the Serial Soleil Royale, and I've seen many beautifully done builds over the years. I think there's a certain mindset that appreciates these classic kits. They use various woods, and brass and wooden parts to affect a certain aesthetic in the final appearance of the model. I think the kit's value this aesthetic over scale and accuracy. The Artesania Latina kit is a modern era kit, and it relies less on using wood varieties for the final finish, and more on painting, or perhaps staining, for a finish, but probably is better in terms of a scale look. A major difference is that the newer Artesania Latina kits feature very detailed instructions, but don't provide any printed instructions or plan drawings. You need computer to view the instructions, as they're only in digital form. If you really want, you should be able to download them and print them out, if you don't mind printing a few hundred pages, but you'll still lack the nice, big printed plans sheets that many of us rely on. The Sergal instructions are very much "old school", with almost no written instruction. These kits rely on the use of several large, folded sheets of line drawings to guide you through the build. These require more interpretation skills, ability to measure from drawings, and definite a good amount of wooden ship modeling experience. As Eric comments, in either case, make sure you have some ship modeling experience before taken on either of these.

As we posted on our own blog last week, while we are taking measures to keep both employees and customers safe, we shut down our showroom to the public. Hello folks, exciting news for us! Ages of Sail is now carrying the line of 17th century Dutch wooden ship model kits from Kolderstock of the Netherlands. We're pretty excited about being able to provide these kits here in the U.S. and abroad. The Kolderstok Line of Kits Batavia Duyfken Statenyacht The Expedition Ship of Willem Barentsz Zeven Provinciën, Flagship of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter These kits are designed for experienced ship modelers: The aim of Kolderstok is to offer a high quality range of wooden model boat kits for ships not available elsewhere. Models of famous ships of the Dutch Golden Age, such as those belonging to the VOC (Dutch East India Company), but also ships famous for the great battles in which they served. Ships under the command of well-known names: Michiel de Ruyter, Marten Harpenszoon Tromp, Jan and Cornelis Evertsen and Adriaen Banckert. Kolderstok models are created using old images and existing models as guidelines, thus ensuring the best possible accuracy. Kolderstok kits consist of laser-cut keel, frames and decks, planking for the hull and decks, masts, yards, rigging and a full set of hand-cast resin ornaments. The ornaments will need a finishing touch. Sail kits are available as a separate kit for the ship model kits that do not already include them. Sail kits include necessary material, instructions, blocks, and belaying pins to mount them. They are not pre-sewn. Note that there are optional cannon sets for a couple of these kits. We haven't posted here in a while, but have a big savings announcement for all you fans of Amati Models. Just an update on availability and pricing on this kit. We were out of stock for a few weeks and just recently got the new shipment in. For all those who will be in the San Francisco Bay Area this weekend, MSW member Clare Hess (catopower) will be manning our table at the local IPMS chapter event. The event, called the 2019 Silicon Valley Classic, takes place Saturday, March 16th from 9:00am at Napredak Hall in San Jose. Address is: Napredak Hall, 770 Montague Expressway, San Jose, CA 95131. They'll be talking to folks who might be interested in trying their hand at wooden ship modeling. The group will also be bringing a few models to enter in the judging this year. Entry is open to the public and not restricted to plastic, though 95% of the models there will probably be plastic. This has been a good way for them to reach an interested audience and grow membership, mostly by those who want to try building a wooden ship model, though the model in the case below is a paper model and a couple of the club's members have been building a bit in paper. We don't sell much at these events, but it's good to get out in front of interested people. We also want to show support for the model building community, and to keep nudging people to try building ship models, wood or otherwise. The event usually starts to wrap up shortly after awards are given out, which starts at 3:30pm. Hope to see some of you there!

Yes, HMS Beagle, and a much better representation than the only other wooden kit we're aware of, so we're very excited about it. Still no word on price or release date, but stay tuned. We'll probably be getting a bunch of them as soon as they're available, along with a restock of the popular HMS Terror kits, which have been sold out for a few weeks now (probably doesn't help that the Terror kit sells for only $149.99). Really hoping to get them both in soon! In the meantime, we've just added a big selection of tools to our website from ModelCraft Tools. And, while we're at it... Here's a new kit from OcCre of Spain coming down the line. We don't have an exact release date or price on this kit yet, but we're expecting it to show up sometime in March or April. We'll be accepting pre-order for it as soon as we can get shipping weight and price from the manufacturer. We're very excited about this kit, especially since the only other kit of this subject was apparently just a modified HMS Bounty. The kit is made at 1/60 scale and measures a little over 28" long and just under 19" tall. Do you know what it is?

Hello All, While I've posted a separate topic on MSW Specials at Ages of Sail, I decided I'd better revive the idea of posting Ages of Sail news, so I started a new topic here. First off, we have some new task lamps from ModelCraft's LIGHTCRAFT line. One particularly interesting is a portable LED lamp that is rechargeable, so that you can unplug it to put it right where you need some extra light without any power cords to get in the way. It's $30, fully dimmable, includes USB power cord, and is said to run for 3-4 hours on a charge. Edit: This is a product of the modern age, so the USB plug is designed to be plugged into to your computer, or any USB charger that can supply 5V. A power supply is not included, but you can use your computer or USB phone charger. For those who are into paper models, Ages of Sail now lists block sets for the 1/96-scale Shipyard paper models. Each set is made for a specific kit and contains all the blocks and deadeyes to complete that kit. These do require some assembly, but come in laser-cut cardboard sheets of blocks. Each sheet makes up one layer of a set of blocks. Single blocks are made up from 3 sheets and double-blocks are made up from 5 sheets. Deadeyes are similarly built-up. Assembled blocks need to be finished by painting or staining/dying. All Shipyard paper model kits include printed blocks, but they have to be laminated and cut out individually. These laser-cut block sets will save time and trouble. Of course, you can always use wooden blocks. But these sets include necessary specialty blocks such as lift blocks, hearts, long tackle blocks, rams head blocks, shoulder blocks, clew garnet blocks, round and triangular deadeyes, and 5-hole deadeyes. Note that we're only carrying these full sets. We do not carry the individual packages of blocks at this time.
