Windows, acrylic grey, or acrylic silver?

First attempt at the shroud and ratlines using the provided tool. Intend to document the full process.

Added ropes to the mast to see how it would look, unsure if these ropes would be tarred and should be black and what the function actually was? (coffee dyed string, the thickest of the two string coils provided in the kit)

Still unsure what colour to do the windows, I like the idea of blue, to seem like they are reflecting the sky, but it looked very unateral, so went for grey.

Nice work on your first build. You have done a good job on overcoming some of the deficiencies of the kit. It sounds like you are enjoying this build.

Nice start to your build. I have always been amazed at how plastic modelers can paint plastic to make it look like wood. Good job.

The saga of the anchors, I have finished up some new stocks for my anchors and I think they came out quite reasonable. Here is the lesser of the charred anchors.
This one concerned me, but after I scorched the second one I really had no choice but to remake the parts. I measured the pieces out on the 3mm scrap pear wood and roughly cut then out with a jeweler's saw.
Next I sanded then down to the lines.
Finally, I shaped them, filed out the channel for the anchor and applied a touch of WOP.
Now I can get back to the puddening and the seizing (which now I'm fearful of since it caused this all in the first place). I think I could get behind scratch building if I can find a way to do it without purchasing a bandsaw in the near future.

Ryland Craze reacted to Guillermo Eduardo Madico in Acrylic paint tips and techniques
One problem I find with acrylics is that because they dry fast they stay on top of the wood and the paint tend to ship out.
I have solved the problem by mixing the acrylic paint with water-based wood stain conditioner.
The mixture penetrates the wood in the first coat and never ship, the paint becomes fluid and much easier to apply with a brush, the time to dry is extended by 2 or 3 fold depending on the amount of wood conditioner. A on part acrylic, three part conditioner will require 5 coats to paint (recommended by Chuck) and will leave a finish that will last.
The only inconvenient is that the wood conditioner adds a little shine to the finish but I correct this with a translucent matte finish over the paint.
hope this help,
G

A bit of progress and a bit of a disappointment. Before I painted the transom interior (red) or exterior (black below trim pieces) I wanted to drill out the rudder hole. It’s a bit of a dicey activity for my way of thinking as you have no “redos”.
I can say I did a decent job of drilling out the rudder hole without causing damage...but...I can see the rudder hole is a bit offset by about 2mm when viewed from the bow...but it is centered between the stern gun ports, meaning the port side transom extends out a bit wider than the starboard.
There’s no fixing the error...just going to build around it and hope the visual noise of rigging and fixtures overwhelms the assymetry.
Sigh....

Ryland Craze reacted to PJG in Fifie by PJG - Amati - 1:32 - Scottish Motor Fishing Vessel
My bench time on the actual boat has been hard to come by the last couple of weeks but I have been plugging away a little at a time on the tedious side-project of making miniature herring. I created a master template for the largest fish (just shy of .5" at 1/32 scale) using Adobe Illustrator and fed the .svg file to my Cricut die-cutting machine to test materials. Paper didn't hold up well to the cutting process so I opted for a more vellum-like material I use for frosted windows on my miniature building projects. This material held paint much better than the paper at this size as well. Once I was satisfied with the material, I created 2 more slightly smaller versions of the template to avoid too much uniformity across the board. In the end I cut somewhere around 400 of these guys thinking that would be more than enough. The jury is still out on that.
My photos don't do justice to the metallic look of the painted fish...they actually shimmer quite nicely when viewed from the distance a person is likely to view the finished model.
Some fish will be scattered around on deck and stuck in the nets while most will be in the hold under the net drying boards. It's a lot of work for such a small detail but ultimately I think it will be a nice touch. Now back to actually building the boat!

I'm pretty sure that when I was a kid in a youth orchestra we went to Bridgetown as part of a concert tour and we all got billeted overnight by local families - I ended up being billeted at the pub (which was a bit of surprise). I can date it pretty well, because we met a local girl called Rita and Sergeant Pepper's had just come out, so we called her "lovely Rita". Not sure if she got the reference . . .
