I just followed the instruction manual...that worked well. Offcourse the square parts were already square, but fitting them on the round dowel was not that easy. There is a small hook in the kit to draw the centerline in the dowel. But mine just didn't work that way. He was definitely not accurate, quite off center. so I eyebolded it, then I pusht a center in the dowel with a push pin, and drilled it with a hand drill for the metal pin. Is you're auxiliary tool to measure the centerline of the dowel also not okay? The octagon sections same way as in the manual. Works like a charm. I did the first part with the disc sander that I have, but a small file works just as fine, if not even better. I did the last part with the file...for accuracy :D...the disc sander goes way to fast for that😅

Great progress Vane! Some of the AOTS book are ridiculous priced on the internet. I can find the Granado version only for 70 dollars!

Tnx Lazy Saint! I read it in your log, so experimented already with it. With pins I set it in the right shape.

Is it my computer? Or is the "finished" part cut off? The part behind the brand name is blank at my downloads. (wooden ships index) -
Dry fitting some yards. Foot ropes needs some attention...the aren't "hanging" right. Next step is stepping the mast...big step 😁

I just calculated the custom fees...then it's not really worth it. So maybe it's better to buy it in the EU. At Dusek it is not available at the moment. That's not a problem now, because i'm not finished with the Pickle yet. But thanks for the reactions!

Tnx Dirk. With the current discounts at Model Expo I would pay about 90 euro less then at the Dusek site ;). The only thing that's uncertain is indeed the customs.

Hello! I have a question about the brig Syren of Model shipways. I'm now building the Caldercraft Pickle and it is my first build. I was wondering if the US brig Syren is appropiate as a second model, because it's advertised as a advanced model. It's offcourse not an easy question and I understand that even beginners can build the Victory if they really want it. But is it a doable step? I like offcourse the idea that it is designed by Chuck Passaro with the extensive manual, and the model is very attractive. There's now a sale on model expo so it's for me (I live in the Netherlands) fairly cheap to purchase one. Second question for the European people. Did someone ordered from Model Expo? And are there problems with shipments?

Thank you 🙂. Yes that is correct. I stained it pretty heavy. It was not my intention to do it that dark. But afterwards, I like it. It looks now like dark oak in my opinion.

Bowsprit constructed, stained, painted and dryfitted. At first some things look a bit daunting, but just step by step it becomes the end result. With a david plane I taper the dowel and with a cordless drill the final step...making it round and smooth.

You're doing great with the carronade tackle Norway...patience is the key here haha. But it seems you are handling it pretty well. Nice set-up with the tweezers in the vise 👍

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
