  1. I have only ever built four models, and three of them have been from Artesania - the San Francisco, the Viking longboat, and the HMS Bounty cut-away. The San Francisco was of OK quality, but the instructions were very difficult to follow. The Viking longboat was an OK kit, but it was single planked and not really suitable for beginners. The Bounty was actually a very nice kit. I have looked at other AL builds, e.g. the San Juan Nepumoceno. The fittings for that kit (blocks, etc) seem to be comically out of scale. To be honest I wasn't entirely thrilled with the fittings that came with my kit either, but I managed to make do. I do not know if this is the norm among kit manufacturers or not, since I have not built very many boats from other mfr's. My next kit (from Amati) is in the mail. We will see.
  2. I am following your build with interest, because I am thinking of attempting this ship. One question though - are you going to paint the stern blue or red? Or leave it unpainted?
  3. Those guns of yours are simply unbelievable! My eyes hurt looking at the detail. Well done, sir.
  4. My goodness! I did not open this build log at first, but I am glad that I did. I am simply amazed by your work. Well done!
  5. Thank you for continuing the posts, Ron. I have been following each instalment with great interest. Your fastidious attention to detail (well, you and others) really makes me think I should make more of an effort. I am learning a lot from you! I do have a few questions though. - in post #119, you show how you make the tiny eyebolts which attach on the outside of the ship (pic no. 5, 6, 7). Can you show a macro of one single eyebolt? I am curious how you made the hole in the eyebolt, and whether you can actually thread a rope through there. - what tool are you using to make the scarphing joints? That is beautiful, neat work. I am guessing that you own a scroll saw?
  6. I just came across this build. You are an inspiration. Incredible work ... if I could aspire to have 1/10 of your skills I would be a very happy man!
  7. Arguing that you should leave off the sails because it might hide your rigging is the same as arguing that you should leave off the top deck because of all the effort you put into detailing the second deck. If you like the look of sails, then go for it. I personally like sails ... IMO the ship looks incomplete without it. No car modeller would make a model of a car without tyres. I don't know why ship modellers keep making models of ships without sails.
  8. I just came across this build - it is truly insane the amount of detail that went into this little boat. I have never seen another ship modeller try to make a scale inscribed coconut before! Well done!
  9. Thank you for reposting. Really neat work on your ship! Just one question - did the planks come pre-cut? I assume that it would not be possible to make straight planks bend to that degree?
