    Greg,

I love the last photo showing the Speedwell sitting on your shop workbench.  In no subtle way we are reminded just how small a ship Speedwell was.  Even at 1:48 scale it is not a very big model.  All your previous pictures lead you believe it is larger.  This might be a great subject for those interested in constructing a 1:32 scale model.  When the book and plans are released it would be nice to have that scale available for purchase too. ;-)  Just something to consider.

Frank, I can tell you're champing at the bit to get started with this project.  When the package arrives you will feel like a little kid at Christmas.  You should take to heart what Chuck tells so many other neophytes, to take your time and don't rush.  Read through the other build logs too, and make mental notes of where your fellow model builders have stumbled.  Fortunately, we have a number of guys in the group with keen eyes who can spot mistakes beginners often miss.  I hope you enjoy the build and the friends you will make along the way.  Happy modeling!

What a beautiful plank on frame model of the Naiad you're building.  It's really coming along nicely.  Your jointery is so clean and tight looking.  Unlike so many other modelers who build in pear your photographs show a nice contrast and you catch the redish look of that wood.  With many other builds I have difficulty telling that it's pear.  I'm curious, is it the quality of your camera, your photography skills, a particular finish you use, or is it just dark pear wood?  I look forward to future posts.

    Hello Ben,
This evening I sat down with a cup of coffee and finally read your build log.  I'm sorry it took so long to get around to it because you have a beautiful build going with all sorts of interesting additions.  I liked your idea of putting wheels on the Harbor Freight work table.  Your pear wood frame reveal with the shadow box is really eye catching.  I like your use of hardwoods throughout, especially the Gabon ebony wales.  You don't see the wood used as much for the wales anymore, but when it is used it really stands out.  Very nice, and classy looking.  That jet black ebony must have cost you a pretty penny.  I took notice of your plank bending station too.  Where did you get those two hold-downs?  Last but not least is your use of black string to insure good planking runs.  That's something I'll have to try.  Thank you, Ben.  It was a pleasure reading and seeing what you're doing.   I will, for sure, follow your build more closely.

    Hi Alexandru,

What an extraordinary job you are doing on Victory; without question the best work I've ever seen for a model of this particular vessel.  Everything is so precise.  Like always, I will look forward to your next post.  Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Alexandru,

While I've never been a big fan of HMS Victory models I can't help but follow your work on this one.  It's over-the-top nice,,,,, just gorgeous!  When you are finished with it I hope it ends up in a place where it can be viewed by lots of people.  Anything less would be a crime.  You are quite the craftsman, a true artist.  Thanks for sharing with us.

Welcome back Ron.  I wondered why you hadn't posted in a while.  It was great news that the cancer hadn't returned!  All MSW stuff pales in comparison to that.  I hope you continue to feel better and better, and get to spend more time in your shop.  From what I can see your model is looking nice..... no, looking great!  In November I bought a Jim Byrnes saw with all the accessories.  My wallet cried OUCH, but it was nevertheless a great purchase.  It's the Rolls-Royce of miniature circular saws.  The look and feel of it cries out precision and attention to detail. Who else sells a micrometer stop, in standard and metric, for their saw?

Ron, are you saying the mistake was what was supposed to be 1/4" planks were only 7/32"?  I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about.  I'm sorry you are set back to start planking anew, but it sounds like nothing short of that was going to make you happy.  Going forward I have this gut feeling you will be fastidiously accurate with all measurements of model and material.  I've had some setbacks myself this past week.  When my back started getting worse I went to the hospital and found out my problem wasn't a bad lower back muscle strain but a ruptured disk.  It looks like I will need more bed rest and much stronger pain medication.  The seventieth year of my life is not starting out well. 🥴

Thank you for the kind words Frank.

Made some progress up front, got cheeks and hair brackets completed. This was quite a project and involved many hours of sanding and test fitting. I’m still not happy with the hair bracket joints and may redo them... I’ll sleep on it a little longer.

one thing I found to make it a little easier with the frizzies was to glue them on prior to laminating the upper and lower cheeks, the same applies to the hair brackets. Once dry I gently sanded the excess off and then assembled them, this made the seams appear clean and sharp.

I still have some clean up work to do as well as finish the stbd side anchor line holes and a little paint touch up. On to guns and tackle next... probably post that update in about 6 months.

also made some poor attempts at better photography with the plans as a background white... lol... lots of room for improvement but I clearly see the benefits now!

It has been a while since I posted an update.  There’s not much to see, but I’ve missed posting.  I’ve completed the spirketting and am starting to work on margin planks.  These are a ways from complete and are still pretty uneven.  The cannon is also far from complete.  I built it just enough to confirm that my gun ports are OK.  I totally cheated on the quoin by using a store bought belaying pin.  I will try to make them from scratch when I get to chapter six.

I’m happy with the three gratings in this shot, but the other three are a train wreck right now.  I bought another grating kit to replace them.

You can see that I cracked the port side beam clamp at the forward notch.  I think this will be hidden in the end.  The port margin plank in this shot is pretty close.  I not cutting the scarf joint until the next piece is ready.

This sounds very strange.  I know that the first time I printed mine, I let the printer do its default, which turned out to be reduced to 95% give or take.  Your problem seems much more severe.  I recommend you download the bulkhead files and take them via thumb drive to an office supply store or fedex business store and ask them to print them for you at 100% scale.  There are either one or two sheets that need to be printed on 11x17 paper, too.

Welcome to the Winchelsea Project Shawn.  Rusty gave you some good advice.  If you aren't going to replace the frame I too would build up the edge with strip wood.  On one of my earlier models I got exceedingly aggressive sanding a frame and had to make repairs.  This is a problem that's not difficult to repair.

I'm happy to see that my Canadian buddy was able to find the cash for a Jim Byrnes saw.  You are just starting to find out what a great purchase it is.  I hope you enjoy this tool, and that it makes sawing tasks easier and more precise.  Now, take your ship model building to another level.   Eventually your wife will calm down, but you have to know the next big purchase will be for her.  🙄

Steve, you're building one beautiful model.  It's turning out great.  Your new home may slow you down some, but I doubt it will affect the quality one bit.  It's fun to read through your build log, and I will continue to follow your progress.
