I have fully sanded the deck smooth. After this, the deck was wiped with an extremely diluted mix of Liver of sulpur gel,http://www.metalclay.co.uk/patinas/,thiswas to take the shine off the copper, rather than turn it black, which a stronger mix would have done.It has removed the shine and darkened the copper ever so slightly. So far two coats of poly have been applied and the deck has been rubbed down ready for the third.

    Happy New Year everyone

I have had a thoroughly enjoyable time and a right laugh reading through your log Captain Steve     I knew I had to come and check it out when I saw you nuts in the other thread Some great original thinking that makes your model packed with detail.I am surprised that your LOS is the same make as mine,I would have thought someone may have produced it in Oz,rather than importing from the UK.Did you find it worked ok on brass?,The manufacturer does actually list a different product for brass.
As a sidenote, the welding technical coordinator of my former employer happened to be one of the worlds leading authorities on ancient Japanese swordmaking and metalurgy. He very rarely came into the workshop,I would have loved to have a chat with him as I find it fascinating.

Step 3: Glue in place. This is simply to be done, but not always easy to fix solid when drying.

Step 2: Translate the contours from the cardboard to a piece of pear wood. Then, cut with a fret-saw and bend with steam till it fits the ship curvature. Trim (grind) again in (very!) small steps till it fits into the place nicely. Good grinding jigs help a lot.

I prepared the pear wood to be 0.5mm thicker than the final plank thickness – this, I will remove when grinding the whole ship hull in order to get a nice, smooth surface.

Here, I will explain the planking technique. Although probably for many a known method, maybe for some interesting to read.
I am showing it on one of the most bended/complicated plank - due to the strong curvature on the bow.

Step 1: Cut the plank template out of a cardboard and trim it so long till it fits nicely and follows the contour exactly. This needs a lot of trimming in small steps.

I've heard great things about the Iwata, but as you noted, they are fairly expensive (but appear to be cheaper than the Silent-air, and since they are a Euro company you wouldn't get hit with all the extra charges).  The big key I've read to getting smooth airflow for air brushes is that you need to get one with a tank, so you don't get the pulsing from the compressor.

I'm in the early shopping stages for one myself, so will be most interested in seeing other suggestions in this thread, will be taking a look at those Silent-air compressors that Frank linked now.

    Hi Dimitris

Thank you for your kind offer. The only thing is the noise level.I have seen some diy quiet compressors on youtube. The only thing is the price of the various components. The various things like the pressure switch etc etc would add up to the cost of one of the Ebay cheapies.I looked at rebuilding mine and the price of the bits soon add up to the cost of a new machine.

    Kind Regards

Hello Nigel , why are you construct one of your own ? If you want I will find some plans for the construction for you . It's cheaper  and works just fine.Only much larger in size.

Congratulations on the completion of a magnificent model mate    It has been a joy to follow along and I look forward to seeing her in the case.I think your method of displaying the masts is a great idea and one worth considering as an alternative to stub masts if you don't wish to contend with displaying a model of full height.

    Kind Regards

Hey all! Last days I've managed to do some more details. The railing was less problems to get in place than I imagined. It fitted very well to the shape of the ship. It was a good advice to do it last Nigel as its fragile by it's nature. The ropes holding the anchor and the others hanging will be corrected when the model is positioned on the stand and I can tell how it should hang.

And with this it turns out I'm done with the model. It's a mixed feeling as I'm happy to have reached my goal but also feel a little sad as I'll miss working on it and talking to you all about it. It has been a great inspiration and source of knowledge, so thanks eveyone for the help and support!

These will likely be the last outdoor pctures of her and I will now start on the case so more to come.

I bought a sample pack of veneer from Woodcraft (in store),  over 20 assorted domestic and exotic species, altogether 20 sq.ft. Each sheet 12" long  various width 5.5" to 7.5". Price USD 31.50.
The sample pack will be part of a wood reference binder.
The best with the sample, I can definitely tell what wood is useful (fine grain) and not.
    Thickness is 0.5mm

    Hi Mates,

Minor update, completed building the false carriages, and began installing them along with their cannons.

I needed to adjust the size of each dummy carriage in order to allow entry and proper positioning within the hull frame insert. As I’ve noted each gun port is somewhat different in size. Hence you see them on that pic pic. in their proper order for installation after adjusting their relative sizes.

I also learned (for future builds) that I will pre-drill the dummy cannon holes into the false inside framing BEFORE installing and gluing these on the inside of the hull.

Turns out that some of my post-hole drilling was not well centered for some of the dummy cannons, had to go back in and adjust many of the holes. AND one of my framing bits fell away (too much pressure with the drill) Grrrrrr.

I rattled the ship sideways and the piece sort-of re-appeared near its proper place. After much finagling, tweezers and gluing it managed to kind of be usable again.

But for that dummy cannon I had to use a lot of wood extensions to create proper spacing coming through the port. Hmmmm

     Now onto the covers.

Thanks for your likes, comments or just looking in.

    Cheers,

    Michael

I have had a lovely long holiday weekend treenailing I have completed both sides under the wales and intend to give this area a few coats of polyurethane for protection.I have also inlaid some small pieces of maple to represent the bowtie piece that joins keel to sternpost.

    Hi Anja
Well I do cheat a bit in that the instructions on the Italian site are six months infront of those here in GB.It gives me a preview of whats to come and how little of the original partwork I will be using. To be honest I am changing so much that the instructions become almost redundant.
I include a few pics of progress to date.I am concentrating on one side at a time to relieve the tedium of constantly treenailing. You will notice the alterations to the upper gunports. These have been altered to accomodate the decorations. The kits supplied directions  are incorrect.I have acquired some black pre dyed boxwood strips to plank the upper hull where the ornamentation sits. This will cover all the alterations I have to make in this area, to create a more accurate representation of the original.
    Kind Regards Nigel

As I mentioned earlier, these next few stages are really slow.I have fitted the deck beam shelves and planked the inside of the hull on the starboard side, including lining the gunports. The framework of the entry port is in place, but this will have the carvings added at a later date, probably when I fit the channels as they sit on the middle channel.I had to reverse engineer the gunports to ascertain the deck levels which involved a great deal of headscratching, but it did 'prove' my gunports were correct. The internal planking has had several coats of poly applied in preparation for treenailing.I am using Dafi's(thank you Dafi) idea for drilling the holes inside.I have glued a drill into the end of a bamboo skewer so I can poke it through the gunports to drill the holes on the opposite internal face.I have given it a try and it works great, but it ain't no Dremel so I may be at it some time
    Kind Regards Nigel

A small update.I have completed the rails on the port side,I have only the forecastle left to do.I had to go and pick up my prezzies from the missus today.I feel like a kid in a sweetshop     Thank you love  Thank you to those on here that advised me which to machine to go for.It goes to show that the way to a modellers' heart is via workshop tools

It has been a while since my last update, although I have been doing lots of hours on the build,it doesn't really show.I have now profiled the hull inside.I have cut and relined the main gunports on the starboard side(upper ports still to do.) the gunports have been cut on the port side but lining to finish.I made a start with the internal planking on the inside of the starboard side.I am only representing caulking on the decks internally. The first deck beam shelf is in position and notched.I have now told myself I must complete all the railings before going any further as I am fed up of breaking the uprights.I have made a start on this as my pictures show. There are some gunports to cut out in these but I shall do that when they are all in place. The red is coloured veneer, not paint.
    Kind Regards Nigel

After considerable deliberation,I felt my build was missing something,an interior.I haven't posted for a bit,but I have been busy beavering away.I wanted to utilise full cannons and carriages throughout. In order to do this I had to remove 20mm of solid birch ply infill at the bottom and smooth off the inner walls of the hull.I then shaped pieces of lime to the inside profile on the scroll saw to build up the hull thickness to nearer scale. The sections were left overthickness to allow for interior profiling. These were bonded in two at a time and allowed to dry before continuing to avoid hull distortion. It has meant that I get to cut the gunports all over again   .I have started work around the top of the hull completing the railings as I go in the hope of avoiding breaking anymore railing uprights. The plan is to fully plank the interior and other than the lower gundeck that will be fully planked, the rest will have sections of planking missing to be able to see the insides, navy board style.
