NMBROOK reacted to sparrow in Royal Caroline by sparrow - Mantua/Panart - Royal yacht 1749, scale 1:47
Hi,
this week I continued on the ornaments. I am quite progressing towards the end of the work on them... Ufff... However still there is enough to finish and improve on this sculpting work. Anyway looking forward to having this done!
All the best,
Jan

Thanks very much Ken. Good question as to how much will be visible. My plan is to leave one side of the quarterdeck unplanked. It remains to be seen what the result will be. Either way, it's fun doing the work.
The remaining work that I will be doing in that area at this time is now complete. I've made and installed the forward bulkhead partition and the small fore and aft partition for the captain's bed space. The forward partition was done exactly like the previous cabin partition ( boxwood sheet and strip, paneled on both sides). The bed space partition was also done with boxwood sheet and strip, but was done with planking rather than panelling.
I also did one other item. I made and installed the bulwark cleats by the various bulwark sheaves. These were done with boxwood strip and were glued and pinned in place. I must admit that I tried a couple of the great looking mass production methods that I've seen here on MSW and failed miserably (my fault -- not the methods). I ended up just making them one at a time with files.
I'm waiting for gun carriages from the Lumberyard to begin the remaining gun deck work. I just may turn to the outer stern area for a while.

Latest Gossip from ENN (Eamonn News Network )... Much Sanding Phase 2 is complete with rather satisfying results ( a Very Very smooth hull form) just a smidge of filler required at the stern (where the upward sweep of a plank meets the lower part of the transom) once that hardens I'm onto Mild Sanding Phase 1, there may not even be a Phase 2 here... Which will be a bit of a Result!!
I filled out a section of the Bulwarks up for'ard to allow the Bow Piece to fit in place (you may recall from a while back the problem I had encountered where the 2 Bulwarks meet at the bow, ie no or too small a gap for the Bowsprit & the Bow Piece) hopefully you can see it in the photos.
I also made up the Stand, which is straightforward and not as Gawd Awful looking as I feared (I'm toying with how I will present the boat when finished, she may end up on Blocks representing a slipway, with the angle matching the angle of the keel to keep the deck level! but that is a bit away yet )
Thanks For Checking In Folks
Eamonn
BTW The Period Ship Handbook pt 2 arrived this morning, WOW they are going to be a brilliant resource, thanks for the recommendation Nigel & Kester, and Dee Dee for the advice on where to get them!! Abebooks are Deadly, and I'd advise all to take a looksee for those hard to find books (by the way 'Deadly' is an Irishism for Pretty Darn Good! )
Photo Time....

Eamonn,
Very good work – and it doesn't look as though you've made even a dent in the filler stores.
Btw, I believe that 'rubberyness' has Chinese origins!

Hey there Nigel, The aliphatic hasn't shown up yet so I continued along with my usual wood glue, I won't touch it until tomorrow anyhoo as It's way too miserable in my work room (weather is brutal, was down taking photos of the crashing waves earlier) Ballahoo is sitting in the heat of my living room at present to help the glue set.
All The Best Nigel
Eamonn
BTW I'd be happy enough with 'Rubberyness' as a word (but then again my friends say that I'm worse than Joyce for using my own weird words )

Looking good Eamonn,I found the alaphatic glue benefits from being left a good 24 hours before sanding, after this time it has gone fully hard and lost any of it's rubberyness (is that a word? )

Hi Nigel .
Happy if it is useful . In Russia we have a cartoon of Baron Munchausen . This character is always saying, " Desperate situations do not happen! "
If this case does not help anyone to despair , I will be very happy

All Righty Then.. The hull is 'closed over' WooHoo!! and as soon as the glue is dry I'll crack open one of my warehouse loads of filler After that comes the sanding and eventual installation of the Keel/Bow pieces (+ Rabbet of course).
I have to wait until my timber shipment arrives before beginning 2nd planking as I want to use the lighter coloured wood I ordered for the first 5 or so rows on the Bulwarks.
Thanks for looking in
Eamonn
Oh! and there is even a Photo.. I really spoil ye folks

NMBROOK reacted to piratepete007 in SHIP'S BOATS
Thanks Nigel. Actually I am moving away from using everything as supplied. I can see this as a 'too hard' exercise using the moulded boats and I especially agree with the thickness aspect - you have put me off. Maybe I was looking for an excuse as I just couldn't get my head around the whole thing especially since the boats would not be there if the guns are set up for battle (i.e. projecting out). Some will use them but I have other things I can be doing.

Now is the time to work on a shield with lilies . First I 'll show pictures, and then open another little secret. So the lion looked at the beginning of work on the shield So after So in fact what happened in the end is not quite what is photographed at the beginning . The shield with lilies actually different. Note that in the first picture , this part is not as convex as in the end. I did not succeed. I was frustrated. I cut below and try again. Again bad. So shield became quite flat and on it was impossible to fix. What to do? Redo it all over again? This is so offensively . I decided to try to fix everything. But first, another blank tree I began to cut again inside with lilies. I liked it, now you need to carefully move it to the figure. That's why I made the first shot. And the line is not there by accident and not for beauty. With her help I was able to print this part of the correct scale on cardboard. Then tried to cut the exact shape, and what was inside the wreath. It was laborious, it was necessary to try a lot. Several times had to start anew. And finally, everything worked, I cut out cardboard replica of what I wanted. I now had a pattern. I have attached it to a new piece with lilies and transferred all nyuansy.Ostalos all neatly cut and paste the new piece into place. So the whole figure was saved.

Came the turn of the hind paws
Now crown
cut small parts separately
and the last item
well that's all. in the end I want to open another one of my secret. Photographing process work is also very useful. Often you can see that just not visible. Pictures help to see their mistakes. When working, don't remember how it looked figurine of a week ago. And if you suddenly have to start all over again (this happens), then you can better understand where to make changes and do not make a mistake опять.У photos have another benefit. When it was all over and the thread goes to the customer on the memory remains of those pictures.

Thanks Thomas and Nils for the kind words. Thanks also to the "likes".
Continuing the work on the Great Cabin, I made and installed the partition for the cabin and a small pantry cabinet set up against that partition. The partition was made of boxwood sheet and strip. Following Sam's suggestion, I decided to panel it on both sides. the hinges are PE brass parts that I had, which I cut down to a more acceptable size. The door knobs are very small nails. Both the hinges and the knobs were blackened using Birchwood Casey.
The cabinet is conjectural, and derives from a reference on a drawing in AOTS. It was made from boxwood sheet and strip with blackened nails for knobs.
This completes the work on the Cabin --but maybe not. I'm still considering the possibility of trying to do a table and chairs at some later point in construction, but the chairs would really be soooo tiny. We'll see. For now, it's on to the forward partition, which will be done similarly to the completed one.

Home.
You can see that for simplicity I glued the paper with the drawing on the workpiece. The first thing to do for landing slot
Then I switched on the machine circular saw, so faster
The following picture shows that this thread I had a second. The first attempt was a little different, and the customer has not approved it.
PS To be continued.
sorry, have to run for job

continuation Unfortunately, when there was work on the head of a lion I ran out of batteries in the camera, so more photos with a ready thread head. You can see that part of the excess from the last attempt is cut and inserted into the groove on the blank bar. Now until the end of the thread it will be on it. If you look closely, you can see that the color of the wood has changed a bit , especially on the head figurines This is because of the oil , and which is impregnated with a lion's head . I put a brush oil on the thread. Tung oil is absorbed quickly and makes the tree a little different . Now it is pricked as before and is very convenient for carving even the smallest elements. Now you know a little secret.
