So I've applied a single coat of a combination stain/satin varnish more to protect finish against dirty marks and stains while I'm continuing work. Once I've cut the gun ports I intend putting a couple more coats on the hull.

I've now moved onto the deck and have used an 8b pencil on the edges of the planks to highlight joints.

My question now is what is the best way to finish the deck off when I varnish? I'm thinking sanding will just leave grey smears. Is there an alternative?

In terms of the finished product most of the decks I've been looking at seem to have a clear varnish without any stain pigment. Is this correct or should I go with something very light?
    Cheers

    Thanks guys,
I was at my local newsagents the other day and saw Model Railroader a monthly publication for train buffs, Fine Scale Models for the plastic kit Buffs, and even Figure International for the Miniature Buffs. All these publications also have some on-line medium, so I began to think what of those in this hobby that aren't IT Savvy? The closest I've come to is a publication called Marine Modelling International which is a fine publication but has a significant amount of remote control content not necessarily everyone's thing. Call me old fashion but I still like the idea reading print publications
So my question still remains is my search in vain, or am I to rely purely on reference books?
    Cheers

    Hi all,
This build has inspired me albeit I'm not sure I have the confidence to scratch build one. Can anyone provide advice on a good manufactured kit in the same vein that I could give a go.

Wow too much. 2 posts in one night.
Just a couple more photos to show some of the planks being held in place.
The 2 planks at the stern have just been microwaved and are drying.
    The others have been glued.

Big progress, that is one whole strake each side.

Look at some of the other builds for this kit - it's not as accurate as it could be when compared with it's commander's sketches of it.This copy on Wikkie is a pretty good illustration https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6e/Mermaid_ship_%281817%29.jpeg. There are some others also available out there.

Scare Bleu, yes i know starting another one. As stated I my Endeavour log
I am very time poor at the moment, but I need to do something.
Something, I can just sit down and model with, and not spend time sorting out what and how to do.
    A couple of pics

it will be done as the kit is, except after looking around it appears, a binnacle needs to be added.
    Cheers Chris

Ok so to model a well kept cannon in good working order I should paint as suggested above. What about the smaller things such as chain link and metal strappings?

This is my first attempt at model ship building. I purchased the kit about 5 years ago and after about 2 months could not find the time to continue so I put her down. I am now recently retired and looking forward to completing it.

She's a beautiful ship, however since this is my first attempt I am not looking for museum quality by any means. That will become obvious when I post my photos. I am hoping that when I have completed it it looks nice enough to display in my home. My friends will think it's nice because they won't know any better anyway.

I appreciate any and all help, ideas, suggestions and constructive criticism. I will not be offended and i am here to learn. If you are willing to spend a bit of your time to help me I'd be a fool to not thank you.

I will try to correct major errors that may be identified. Some minor mistakes might stay and i will know better for next time. Since I am well into the project it might be too late to fix some anyway.

Thank you in advance for your help and encouragement.

    Vincent
