    1. I don't know
    2. What I've seen both up. As Jan Wrote in Hartmut's build, the lee side is lowered, but on display, you wouldn't show the lee side, but the weather side ...

    Aye, Mates,

many thanks for your kind interest in my new project.

I am building the hull in an unusual way. Instead of a first planking I glue in plywood between the bulkheads. Than I had to sand it into its shape. Here are some pics from this way.

This construction results in a very stable hull. Next. I'll plan the material for the wales, the keel and the deck beams. I still have a few pieces of mahagony that will work well for that. The planks I will make from pear. That can look pretty good together.

Many thanks to you guys for all the "likes" and kind words.

Here are some pics of the current state of the model. The decoration figures are made of polymer clay. To make the figurehead was very fiddly. The lion of the full sized Utrecht in my eyes looks like a cartoon. But a very nice one. Iwasn't able to reproduce it in my model.

Lets have a look around the pavillon
Even the two water gods at the pavillion are rather strange guys than baroque gods. But,I did my very best.

I have started the next project, an elizabethanian galleon.
I use some plans I did find in two old german modeling books, Mondfeld, Historische Schiffsmodelle, a german classic from the early 70., and Stoeckel,Risse von Schiffen des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts. Both authors showed very similar plans of an elizabethanian galleon, named Golden Hind or ex Pelican. It may be a model of Drakes Golden Hind. How Golden Hind looked exactly is unclear. But I like the plans, and they also seems quite right for the type Galeone of the english sailors in the time of queen Elizabeth Tudor.

Fist step was to modify the slipway. For the aligning of the frames on the keel plate I use a cross line laser

Installed all the ratlines and instead of a drop of glue I use "Hard as Nails - Extreme Wear". It is clear dries quickly and you can cut the ends off very close to the shrouds. For people who don't know what this is. Women use Hard as Nails on there brittle nails or to cover nail polish.
Also installed the topsail and working on the foresail and jib.

Thanks for the comments Piet and Cog and all the likes. Finished all the sails and the standing rigging.
Didn't have any belaying pins so I am making them myself.
Stick a 2mm in diameter and 5cm in length in the dremel. This is fastened to the dremel drill press set up at a 90 degree angle. So the dowel is facing me. Dremel at lowest speed and use micro files to shape the pin. Average about 5 minutes per pin. Works great.

Mast and bow sprit are in. Still need to do the shrouds. None of the rigging is permanent yet. All roping is loose. I learned that lesson a few ships back. Keep everything loose so you can adjust it here and there. Once it is permanent it is difficult to adjust.

Started on the sails stitching and adding bolt rope. The topsail is a dark brown sail I scavenged from a tjelk that broke from my last move. Both foresail and jib are stitched but no bolt rope yet. The main sail will be stitched next.

I also made a pdf of how I make sails. Towards the end of the built I will show how I do it.

Yesterday at my woodworkers meeting the treasurer gave me a Dremel Moto Lathe 700. It is a small one. Next week I am going to attempt making belaying pins with it. Should be fun to try. Also going to try canon barrels from wood.

I understand now what you mean. The pictures say it all thanks for explaining.
I suppose your method is straight forward enough for straight planking but would get more tricky for fancy stuff like this if you wanted to maintain the caulking effect gap between every joint.

Also if you wanted to lay down a specific plan on paper first you would have to allow for an accumulation of gaps over the width of the deck which would be easy enough too.

I will do a test run though to see if the resulting caulking effect is a big enough improvement to warrant the extra work.

I had a good rummage through my cupboards and thankfully located the rudder and it’s shaft.

A few minutes later and it was fitted.
    Direction re-established!!

I really must crack on and get this build finished. At least I have had time to finish the display stand. It took some time to trim the front legs to get Altair to sit with her waterline level. Now all that’s left to do is make and mount the ensign and the Royal Thames Yacht Club flag. Oh and replace 3 stays that have loosened as the model has acclimatised to the house conditions.

I must catch up on other people’s logs before I get withdrawal symptoms.

    Hello,
and many thanks for your likes and comments.

Today I finished the first ten gun ports at the Gun deck. These one are not so complicated, but the next will be. The next one I have to do manually for each port.

I think I must not to explain the pictures.

At the inside I made them nearly flush with the hull, so that I have not so much to file and sand later.

At the last picture the outside of the port frames are cleaned up and are flush with the outside of the hull.

The next time you will hear not so much from me, because I'm busy doing the rest of the ports.

Now to my problem. It's not really a problem, but something that is not clear.

The 1745 establishment did't say nothing about wales, so I went to the 1719 establishment. I copied this out of Goodwins book English Man of War, page 256.

The wales at this time had 2 strakes with a strake between them. And these strakes are connected with butt and hook joins. What also is curios, that the stuff between has the same thickness then the wales. As I know they have the same deep, or nearly, but not the same thickness as you could see at the next picture.

Now, how did these butt and hook joins look like? I collect some ways, but wich one was used and there are other ways?

For my ship the wales where made of 3 strakes. They made I think, only the stuff in the middle to a part of the wales and now with the same thickness. On pictures it is hardly to see, because of a thick layer of paint and reflecting light. But I found two examples. First the Centurion and second an early 74 gunner at the museum in Chatham.

Nice yellow colour! These 3 strake could't be connected with the known Anchor Stock or Top and Butt planking. So I think that they where connected, each strake for them self, with a butt and hook connection.

What is your belief in this case. Many thanks in advance

    Hello all,

after building the Dragon, I'm starting now the blog about building the Tiger from 1747.

The Tiger was a 60 gunner after the 1745 establisment. Last year I ordered the plans for the 60 gunners of the 1745 establishment, but learned later that all the 6 ships, build after that plan, where all a little different. So I decided to build the Tiger and that, because it was the only plan that shows also the artwork of the ship. Interessting is also, that they moved the captains cabin sometimes down to the upper deck! There was more space.
http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections.html#!csearch;searchTerm=Tiger_(1747) Here you could see the plans.

Then last fall I went to Chatham to see two models of 60 gunners, the Centurion and a unspecified ship (SLR0442 SLR0472). Both ships from the 1730s, but the models are made ca. 1745/47. They will be my reference for the Tiger.

And because I had build the Dragon already with frames, I decided to be lazy and build in the bulwark technique. So I started early this year with the hull and that he is.

But before I started with the hull, I made the figure head. Just to see if I could do it after pause for a year.

And before the questions come, with what did you do the carving, here is most of it to see. Just with hand tools. To the right you see Leo the second.

And here is Leo III. From toe to crown hi is 9 cm high, in reality he was 4,5 m high

Here Leo did a sit sample. The guy in the background it's me.

The next steps would be to close the counter and then made the cannon ports.
