I could have sworn I took more pictures of the progress I've made these last couple of days.   I guess not     just as well since it's been a lot of cutting and sanding.   since the doors are too small...except for the forward structure,  I won't be doing the movable aspect.   the first thing done was to line the doors with walnut,  to create the door jams.

once they were lined,  they were trimmed and fitted into the door openings.

since I'm changing it up a notch,  it will continue with the doors,  which will be painted flat white.

the two feed troughs were assembled.   they need to be sanded now.

next were the vents that go to the aft structure.  the frames were cut,  and are beginning to be assembled.

I know I sound rushed........the admiral just called the supper is ready.   I'll be back if more progress is made

looks like an extremely well made kit parts wise. or perhaps you are just doing a really great job of it.

Now the side railings are installed, as well as the hawse hole covers and a bit more detail (rear door).

I'm not sure how well the pictures show it, but there are "metal" bumpers running down the top side and lower wale.

I have touch up to do on the top white part of the hull just below the rear gunwale, and elsewhere.  So that discoloration will clean up.

really great looking paint work dave after your fix ups. spray paint tends to just sit on top of a surface. it doesn't penetrate unless you physically push it in. its the reason house painters back roll over sprayed area's. I actually liked the light blue in the original kit pics, but now after seeing your royal blue I reckon it works even better. gives the vessel a more regal appearance which it deserves.

Bottom of hull painted and black stripe applied to waterline.  As I mentioned earlier, I didn't like the light blue shown in the kit pictures, so I went with a royal blue instead.

A quick update, managed a couple of hours over the last few days - being retired sure is busy!

I’m planking the hull at the moment. As other builders have noted, the kit is short - by about 5 strips - of the walnut used, so I’ve got to order some more. I’ve done the sides (almost) so my plan is to finish that, then do as much of the bottom as I can, working from the sides inward. I’ll be using the cutout sheet of ply to gauge the bow-facing cuts for the strips nearest the sides; I’ll add a pic to show what I mean.

I’ve also glued on the livestock bar supports. I’m thinking adding the actual bars might be a challenge given the tightness of it all...

Lastly I’ve outlined the 2nd & 3rd decks for the parquet planking. What fun that will be!

thanks for the kind comments gents.   and again,  thanks to those who hit the like button.   I spent some time at both tables....I cut my losses with the T.D.   I hit onto another problem,  and I caused another,  so better left alone.

thanks Grayhawk.......if they don't upgrade it,  they should at least look at it and cure some of these problems.   I'll explain when I post my update.

thanks John........I've warmed up to them.  especially since I looked at images of these vessels,  and found that they are indeed......mostly white.   I keep repeating the 'non conformist's oath'

A small update - planking is done & sanded smooth from the waist to the level of the lower wales. The blanks for the dummy cannon barrels of the lower gun deck were glued in place & painted flat black, along with painting the inside of the gunports red. This is a single planked hull,so I needed to get it nice & smooth. Below the lower  wale I am going to double plank the hull with some cherry veneer(I hope). The planking on the upper part of the hull is 2mm thick,so I`m using some 1.5mm thick lime to do the first layer of planking below the wale, which after adding the second planking should come out very close to the same thickness as the upper planking. Any slight variation will not be noticeable due to the wale separating the upper & lower halves of the hull. I`ve never tried using veneer for planking,so if it doesn`t seem to be working ok I can always sand it down & use some of the usual .5mm thick strips.

I backed my way into an adaptation.  I have been nervously watching my supply of deck planking, looking ahead and pre-calculating total needs.  I concluded that I would possibly run out just before finishing, and so looked for an option.

That came in the form of using some 2x2 mm walnut for the hatch covers on the aft well deck.  Now it turns out that of course I had plenty of planking at the end, and could have done the hatch covers in matching planking as shown in the manual -- but I think the walnut provides some interesting contrast.

In the pictures below, you may wonder why the planking on the well deck doesn't run all the way to the rear.  It doesn't have to, as the unplanked area won't be visible -- but it's another reflection of my "save planking" insecurity manifesting itself.  The wood has received its first coat of varnish and isn't quite dry -- hence the uneven shine.

    David

thanks for the kind comments and all who hit the like button    been rather busy this afternoon.....no time to do much.   after the structures and the main deck dried long enough,  I did a dry fit....    I'm happy with it.   I think it will be a nice change of pace to see one in a different color    most that I've seen have been white {no offense....all the models I've seen have been done very well.......awesome,  in fact}.   we can blame it on Tom Sawyer for promoting whitewashing

this morning has been a bit jumpy for me.......did a couple online applications.   seeing as some changes are to be made with the wood I use,  I started right in with the edging around the main deck.   I have some .5 x 3 mm mahogany thin strip that proved to be more flexible,  than what they supplied to use.   it also matches the bottom better as far as color goes.

the main deck,  after masking the bottom,  was given a couple coats of semi gloss lacquer.   when fully cured,  the gloss factor will be minimal,  but will seal the deck.   not a real good picture,  but it'll show how sunny the room is

the structures were given a couple coats of gloss lacquer.  I want more of a shine on them.

hard to tell in this light.......here's a batter one.....I hope

.....moving right along........   what?????.....an errand........oh bother!

At the rate you people are starting build logs for this kit, I'm about ready to figure out how to design and offer another riverboat kit to give more options given the apparent interest.

so, here is some further progress. finally finished planking and sanding out the windows and door frames of the second deck structure. at the moment it has only 1 coat of paint and is just sitting there. not glued down yet, hence its not really level in these pics, plus I reckon it will be a lot easier to place the windows and doors before its stuck in place. I need to put some fine filler between some of the planks, but I may also leave a few as I think it adds to the rustic character of the boat. also, I am brushing all the paint work to achieve a more realistic look for the period. the only medium I am spraying on this is the final clear matt coat as I finish each section.

when I get the windows and doors all in, complete with curtains, I want to see just how visible the interior of this structure will be from the outside when the third deck is also attached. if I can see fairly clearly inside this space I will install a floor and add carpet, dining tables, and a gambling area down aft.

    cheers

crawling along with all this planking of decks and cabin structures! finally have second deck glued down, but requires another coat of matt clear I reckon. second deck cabin structure is a slow process to plank. here it is just dry sitting on top of the deck itself. when completed and ready to mount, it will also be white, so any small gaps the camera shows up can be filled if necessary.

none of my passengers and crew have been glued into position as yet, and I am still procrastinating over the horse bay area detail. anyway, sorry, not much of an update, but it is a way to bump my log up from page 5 I guess

Possibly a bit late to start a log, but what the heck! Being an old steel boat sailor myself I never thought I could fall in love with any other type of craft. I was wrong! When I saw Charles's build log of this vessel I literally fell in love with this type of craft. Since then I have tried to learn as much about them as I possibly can. Kurt and Cathead have provided a wealth of information, and for that I am truly grateful.

Previous to starting this model my main understanding of this type of vessel came from multiple viewings of the Jodie Foster ( best actress ever) film, Maverick. Obviously I had a lot to learn!

The thing I learnt very quickly was that this particular model was not a very true, or accurate depiction of the type of craft of the day. Spewing, as Jodie would look fine on mine! Anyway, so given it is a bit of a fantasy boat, I intend to try to glam mine up a bit (as would befit Jodie).

There are a few gaps between pic updates, but since Santa deemed I had been extra good this past year I was presented with a cool new digital camera! So once I get to master it a bit better I hope the updates will be more frequent.

Anyway here is where I am at the moment.

no, I wanted to use black knobs on the lower working deck and white/ivory knobs on the upper class decks. I am thinking red and white polkadot curtains for the next level windows and doors as well, but first have to make a start on all these louvre shutters for these windows. that will take an age!

so, I have completed one side of the interior windows and main doors to the second deck structure. I decided to go with yellow curtains as it is quite dark inside, especially when the next deck goes on as you can see where I have placed it on top to get an idea of how much visibility is inside. again, the whole structure is just dry fitted as I still need to make up and position exterior louvre window shutters on each side of the windows. this should also clean up and square off the window framing nicely. I hope!

looks really beautiful. I ummed and arred about painting my riverboat hull I must say. I really like the natural timber color, but decided to paint as most of them were painted I believe, plus I have heaps of natural wood on the decks and as mine is a massive size I think the white hull breaks it up nicely. anyway back to yours, as I said, it looks fantastic. are her deck structures going to be painted, or left natural like the hull? also, for what its worth, with your trial naming decals, I actually like the bottom one the best; yes, even the dice.
