Can you tell us in what country the ship was made?
In the meantime, maybe you have seen this thread?

Sorry guys, but I am still waiting some more information about those simple windlasses. I tried to find something with google, but that wasn't very succesful. So if somebody of you had pictures or detailed drawings of them or could give me a link where to find them I would be very very thankful.

Beautiful carvings. Could you explain more like which 3D programs you use, what kind of 3D milling machine you have, etc.

Thanks a lot for your answer Wefalck. I think you are right when saying that this rudimentary drawing is not correct for a 1830 vessel. It is included into a drawing of the complete ship which was drawn around year 2000 and concentrates more to show the lines of the ship and not her details. And because there exist no original documents of the ship any more, so nobody could say if the whole drawing is correct or not. So I think a hand operated simple windlass would be more correct in this case as you suggested. So if you have any drawings or pictures about that kind of a windlass, or a link where I could find them, I would be very thankful.

Looking at the rudimentary drawing, this looks like a patent windlass that would be worked with the T-shaped handle bar. These did not exist yet in the 1830s. Off the cuff, I am not sure, when they were introduced, but probably not on a larger scale before the 1850s. Their construction involves the casting and machining of larger pieces of iron, which was not available everywere.

Originally, a boat of the 1830s would have been fitted with a simple windlass, operated by handle bars. A patent windlass may have been fitted later, of course. What do you know about your prototype ? Ships that did not need to anchor frequently would have retained the simple windlass for reasons of economy.

A frequently reproduced illustration of a patent windlass you will find in Paasch's 'From Keel to Truck', which can be downloaded on the Internet.

I have a collection of windlass pictures, but it would be useful first to ascertain what kind of windlass may be required, before pulling them out of my collection.

Joo se on hyvä, täällä näyttäski olevan jo ihan mukavan kokonen porukka. Saattaa päästä välillä helpommalla kun kyselee kotimaan vaihtoehtoja vastaaville maaleille ja tarvikkeille.

Tervetuloa palstalle Kalakukko! Hauska saada lisää suomalaisia laivamallien rakentajia tänne.

Welcome onboard Kalakukko! Nice to have more Finnish ship model builders here.

Proxxon is selling a plastic self centring 4 jaw chuck for their DB250 wood lathe. Not good for metal but quite reasonable for wood. I have used it many times to make parts of different wood species.

    Tervetuloa (Welcome) Mikko,

Can I encourage you to start a build log? You seem to have a good start. There are others building "Dragen" (The dragon in Danish). A build log can be useful when you get stuck with poor instruction etc.

    Regards

Hello Mikko and welcome to very nice forum. Here are already some shipmodel builders from Finland, but there is always room for more. You are building a nice sailboat!

Hello Aviaamator, I have not followed your blog for a long time, but now I see that you have had some progress. What a wonderful ship's boat you have made, congratulations!
There are a few mistakes at Ancre's plans, so don't worry. You have to use your imagination once and a while to think how to continue building. After all nobody can claim afterwards if certain details have been build right or wrong, if they are built as perfectly as you are doing.
And I am very glad you have healed from your health problems, congratulations for that too!

I have used a mixture of epoxy and microballons. It has many advantages: When cured it is very easy to sand and light. And you can make it as solid as you want, from a youghurt like into almost solid only adding more microballons into mixture. Also you can prepare the amount you need without the need of buying a full tube which always hardens when not in use. Normally it is white but it can be colored with any pigments just mixed into it.

Moxis got a reaction from EricWilliamMarshall in Bending sharp edges on brass strips
When I had to make sharp bends into thin brass sheet, I made a simple jig of 6x30 mm iron bar.  First I cut suitable pieces of the bar, milled straight the two mating edges, made the holes and threads and screwed parts together so that the other jaw is fixed and the other can be moved a couple of millimeters:

Then I was locating a piece of brass sheet between the "jaws", tightened the allen screws lightly and put the jig between the jaws of my workbench:

Bent first the brass piece with fingers, and finally tapped it slightly with a hammer to get sharp bend:

And voila, you have a rather sharp bend. This works with brass of thickness, say 0,1.....1,0 millimeters. And with this jig it is possible to make "angle iron" of brass sheet up to about 20 cm length:
