trippwj reacted to Chenequa in Frigate Essex by Rafine - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Kitbashed
thanks for the comments. haven't heard a word from ME whether they are going to make corrections. I wonder if Sam knows?
Stopped after completing the bulkheads; and I think they're correct as near as I can tell. Are others proceeding? Sort of disappointing.
My limited knowledge leads me to believe the stoves were mounted on a brick base.
Nice today in Stuart. Too nice to work anymore on the ECB.
Cheers,
Terry

Thanks Hamilton for your continuing interest.
I have now built the stove, but will not mount it until sometime later in construction to avoid damage to this very delicate little piece. Since the stove is painted, I chose to use the basic kit pieces to assemble it. I did a number of the details with non-kit items. For example, I used very thin styrene to do the various doors, a couple of very small bulls eyes I had for the pulleys and some tiny (40 links per inch) chain to connect the pulleys. Doing this piece almost convinced me that my aging eyes and hands need to work in larger scales. Still very enjoyable, but getting very difficult.
Next, I will start to mount and rig the first few guns.

thanks Adam.......I actually did the rails separate, and put them on after. it worked out better that way {masking can be a real pain}
thanks for the good word !
thanks Lawrence.....been a bit of a break though......our furnace decided to crap out {a s-l-o-w, agonizing death}. we had a new one installed today........out with the oil and in with the Natural gas. I hope it saves me money! thanks for the good word!
thanks Frank.......there's a fine line between scratch and bash.....but I am having to scratch out a few parts. the crow's nests seemed to be the biggest problem.....a lot of the parts were missing in the kit. the main mast nest gave me some trouble, but I think I have it sorted out pretty well. now that the heat is back on....I assembled the fore and main mast. the second steps are just dry fitted at the moment, but I did that after I took these pictures. I hope to have more up soon. I'm not sure if I'm up to snuff with some of the other folks here, I favor chalking it up to "creative modeling"
I hope no one get nose bleeds easily........we're going to up
here is what the frame work under the nests looks like
thanks for the good word Frank! I'm still playing catch up here on the site.........I hope to see your fine build in the list!

trippwj reacted to threebs in Pennsylvania by threebs - 1/72 scale
Here are some photos of the yards, yard tackle, and stirrups. At 1/72 scale I think this is about as small as I would like to attempt making the stirrups this way. If you coat the assembly with super glue it makes a nice stiff stirrup that hangs from the yard nicely. That is my self made serving machine the yard tackle is laying on.

Very nice Wayne. And yes yes yes - Chucks lines look so much better than the kit supplied stuff, I have them and can't wait to get to that part!

trippwj reacted to SkerryAmp in Mayflower by SkerryAmp - Model Shipways - 5/32" = 1'
Well, nothing HUGE... but a quick update. My plan as mentioned before was to get the other trim up over the weekend, well - when I went to do that I noticed a tiny tiny flaw in my ship which I had to rectify ASAP. One of the railings wasn't trimmed and sanded properly and was thicker than the other so had to work on that a bit before anything else could happen.
Then, of course tonight I realized I couldn't just lay the trim down either as it would be easier to take care of some of the painting first.
So - tonights up date, the yellow painting along the exterior of the forward and rear decks. This of course has to dry and then tomorrow will be masking it off and doing the green stripes. THEN adding the trim!
Whew!
So, here it is, the mayflower + yellow paint!
I searched around for a yellow that I thought looked real good, and one of the threads here had mentioned using artist acrylics. So, poked around: the goal was to look for the right colors but more subdued and less vibrant than a lot of the model acrylics tend to come in. Whalla! Yellow Ochre. I used Winsor and Newton Galeria artist acrylics, and while straight from the tube they worked well I did use a little liquitex flow aid to help even out the finish a bit.
Here is the result
I wasn't overly concerned with "neatness" at this point (I mean I didn't just slap the paint on but wasn't dialed into final lines etc) as there will be trim over the edges as well as masked and repainted secondary edges which is where I will start to hone in and focus on the lines.
Until next time!!
Enjoy!

Take your time on that planking. I think we all wrestle with it to one extent or another. Someone on here once said 'treat each plank as a mini-modeling project' --- good advice. The key is to keep improving from one model to the next ---- or even from port to starboard.
Or you can do what I did. Get a camera with a 'Make Planking Look Decent' setting !
PATIENCE!!!!!

Hi Bob, glad you like it so far, it really is a fun one to work on.
Well, ya got me =)
I didn't too much (hardly any) detail on the planking because quite honestly it is a lot of magic under there. I am HORRIBLE at planking. What you see is a great attempt at getting the planks somewhat where they are supposed to be and then filled, and sanded, and filled some more and sanded some more, and filled and yup - you guessed it, sanded.
Since most of the hull is painted I had the luxury of not having to stress on it too too much. The planks that can be seen are not bad at all to lay in as they are for the most part just parallels and straigth with some simple bending at the bow to get them to lay in well.
=)
Planking is something I am working on improving my self as I do each build. The other ones I am working on I am not going to be able to fake it in any way - so this will be interesting!

Young America - extreme clipper 1853
Part 48 – Starboard Ceiling Treenailing and Bolting
In the first picture, the floor ceiling planking is installed except for Treenailing. The thicker bilge ceiling above it has been completed up to the underside of the lower deck clamp, except for the bolting.
While the last few strakes of bilge ceiling were being installed both the bolting and treenailing was begun. The next picture shows some of these fasteners installed.
The copper wire bolts in the thicker ceiling show as bright dots in this picture. They were iron bolts driven through each frame and riveted flush inside and out. Before finish is applied these will be blackened. This section of floor planking below the thicker strakes has been treenailed and some sanding has begun. The butt ends of these planks were secured with iron blunts, represented here by black monofilament CA glued in.
All of the tree nailing was completed in three sessions that included making the treenail strips from bamboo skewers. In the next picture one of these .020” strips has been dipped in glue and is being inserted into a predrilled hole.
The holes are just large enough for a slip fit. After pressing to the bottom of the hole using the clippers, the strip is cut off as shown below, the new end is sharpened with a razor blade and the process is repeated a few hundred times.
The excess glue is washed off with clean water. When dry the nail heads are filed off flush as shown below.
The planking was then sanded with 120-grit followed by 220-grit paper and then buffed with Scotchbrite as shown below.
The next picture shows the area at the stern after these steps.
The next picture shows a section of the ceiling after all of the treenailing was installed and the planking sanded and buffed.
The wire bolting of the thicker strakes is only partially complete on the right side of this picture. The treenails are not too pronounced in this picture, but they will “pop out” and be more visible when finish is applied later. The iron bolts at the butts are quite visible here. The copper bolts into the top of the keelson at the lower margin of the picture were copper and will not be blacked.
All of the ceiling work on the starboard side is now complete. The next step will be to sand down the bolts on the outside of the frames and then move on to the ceiling on the port side.

Hi B.E.
Thanks for the good words mate and you are absolutely right, It's not you who's had the senior moment but me, it was Arthur ( AEW ) who made that post, thank you for putting me right, if only all mistakes were as easy to fix.
I do want to thank you though for the reviews you did with the Proxxon tools, very thorough and informative. I am thinking of getting some new toys and they were a big help.

OK now for part 2,
This is my first attempt at Snaking which was only good for practice as you will see.
No system used just the Mk 1 eyeball, with a spacing of 20mm on each stay or 10mm combined
It's looking a little hairy
All trimmed up, doesn't look too bad This is the new Snaking, much better I think
Thanks to B.E. this is his method, I got to this spacing after some simple maths, 12mm on each Stay or 6mm combined
So that's it, your all up to date now.
I will some further update soon I hope, if the kitchen refurb doesn't interfere too much.

Hi Guys,
Thank you all for your very positive feedback, comments and likes, I really do appreciate them immensely.
Thought I had better post this before I watch England thrash Wales in the rugby 6 Nations.
OK an update is due and I do have one, the Bowsprit is made and fitted and Gammoning completed, Main and Preventer Stays are fitted as is the Foremast Stay and Preventer stay.
I made a start on the Snaking for the Foremast and completed it, then I ripped it all off again as the distance between the ties was too great, I have since redone it and am much happier with the Mk 2.
Next step is to do the Snaking on the Mainmast then the Crowsfeet on all three masts.
Some pictures
Completed Bowsprit dry fitted
Just checking for alignment
Stays prior to fixing
Main Stay and Preventer Stay fixed
Gammoning of the Bowsprit
Foremast Stay and Preventer Stay fixed
I will add some more directly showing the Snaking

@ Sam,
You are an unbelievable guy you know that ?
At the end of this post you will see two pictures how the workroom looks at the moment !
You are satisfied now ?????
I wanted to start with the next planking in the middle of the hull but I changed my mind.
I'm now have started at the keel and work my way up.
There is a strange bend at the stern and now I can see how it will go.
I can play with the planks.
@ John,
Thanks !
Planking is just like riding a bicycle....once you know it you will never forget it !
@ Kevin,
Also thank you !
I'm gonna use tiles instead of tape.
That's what they provide in the kit so I'll use them .
@ Nick,
I know you are busy with school so no excuse please !
Thanks for the good word !
@ Sam,
Here are the promise pictures !

Thanks Kevin, and mine is in the same line as yours.. that is a Racing Sail Boat where the crew Hikes Out, admittedly in this boat the Deck itself is extended out so you can Hike in comfort.. well sort of comfort anyhoo after all it is a serious racing machine..
The boat in question is the one on the back ground, and yup she is HUGE, those wee dots along her side are the crew 'hiking out'
Am off to bed now folks so I won't be around again for a few hours.

Spot on D, the infamous 'miss match' 1988 Cup Races.. indeed KZ1 was truly amazing, virtually wakeless for so big a boat, but Mr Connors threw the 'Cat' at them and that was that
I think the New Zealand boys closest look at the American's was at the starts, cos once that Start Gun went off so did they..
Love him or hate him Big Dennis Connors was a great racing sailor!
Over to you D..

Sjors, thanks for stopping by. Yes it is a big change from wood, but I'm having fun with it. I think I'm going to push to get this finished before I get back to Pegasus. As I mentioned wayyy back, when I got home in November, I really couldn't get back in to working on Pegasus, so I gave it a pause and started this mega-project.
Kevin, I think I caught you talking about the SD14 a couple weeks ago. That looked like an impressive model.
BE, I know what you mean about the appeal, but for me, it's close to home. As for paint, well...yeah... she's gonna take a LOT.... I've already begun stockpiling

trippwj reacted to Shazmira in US Brig Syren by Shazmira - Model Shipways - 1:64
For those that were following my previous build of the Syren, here I go again. Had a bit of a snafu getting the replacement parts from ME this time, but as usual they came through and all is good.
The bulkhead former, bulkheads, and everything are not the nasty laser burnt ply of before. I am hoping this new wood will turn out to be more stable and not crumble to pieces as before. I haven't quite figured out what exactly the wood is they used for this...very light weight, large grained, and I swear it is balsa....but my mind seems to think no one would use balsa for the skeleton of a ship....but what do I know.
So first the obligatory box and contents pictures
My boxwood upgrade from Jeff at Hobby Mills
new former with bulkheads squared and glued!
So to my friends and followers, wish me luck that this third attempt truly is the charm!
AND WE ARE OFF!!!

trippwj got a reaction from Shazmira in Harriet Lane by trippwj - Model Shipways - 1:144 Scale
Well, FINALLY!!!! Here are a couple of shots - not sure how well you can tell the difference, but first is a picture of the shrouds on the fore mast. These are with the kit supplied thread.
This shows the shrouds on the main mast using thread from Chuck. I used the brown vs the black - think it is a better approximation for this scale. To me, the thread looks better than the kit thread but, more importantly, it is much easier to work with!
