Wow, Ferit - that looks like it was an amazing vacation!  Thank you for sharing these pictures with those of us who can only dream of such a trip!

I do feel lucky to have a workshop. We finished part of the basement in the house when the kids were small for all their big toys. They are both away at college now, so I was able to take over one of the rooms for a workshop (and I am starting to creep into the other room, but so far the admiral hasn't noticed  ).  I was able to buy the tools I have slowly over the last five years, but that is it for now (did I mention I have two kids in college?  ) I would like to eventually get a Byrnes saw and thickness sander but that will have to wait. I still seem to do a lot of work by hand, and I really enjoy it, but when I do need the power tools, it is nice to have them.

I have an update on the Goth......the lower fore shrouds are finished and waiting for the ratlines.   I'd like to get the others done before I get to them though,  so it will be  a while.  I picked up where I left off,  tying on more dead eyes.

painting the individual dead eyes does have it's own drawbacks.  the assembled shrouds aren't all the same height.......and that's OK,  I feel........it looks more natural this way.   much the same respect as the gun port lids........I think they could practice ten times a day,  and in the heat of battle,  could never open them all to the same amount.   I also took the time to look at the yards......just like the bow spirit yards,  I want them to have some movement.  they will be suspended by block pulley assemblies and fastened to the mast with rope strung with perrels.  holes were drilled to thread the blocks and lashings,  and wound to hide the attachment points.

I was going to do three rows of perrels,  but I think they are a bit too large.  I had bought these beads a while ago,  to do this.

    I settled on two rows.  now I didn't make those little deviders that go between the perrels.....too small to even mess with,  so I tied them together in a couple of places and painted them flat black to kill the sheen {and the white thread.....should have used black}

I went back to work on the shrouds

starboard side is complete......the back stay riggind is all that's left.   now to complete the port side.

the second stay has been added to the bow spirit.  this is the first of the two that will support the boom portion of the spirit assembly.

I also added the last of the upper main mast stays.........it did cause a bit of slack in the lower stays.  it's not much......I will see what the back stays will do to take it up.  if it don't,  well I'll just fix it then.

the port side shrouds are complete

the outer boom stay is now in place

blocks are added to the lower fore mast yard and the spanker yard of the mizzen mast

which brings me to where I am now.   I had run out of that type of thread for the dead eyes and running rigging.   I was hoping I could find it.......and I finally did.....in a dollar store,  no less.  of course,  I had to buy the kite in order to get it........the admiral told me to get two of them....they were only $2.50     so, I figure there's still time to introduce the grand sons to kite flying....I have other string to substitute.  the
bundle of thread {it's too small to be called string........although it is what one would percieve it is}...with what I had before,  I was able to do a couple of builds before this one.  these are larger.......should last me a long time!   so now,  I'm laying the first pairs of shroud lines for the main and mizzen masts

A few more photos for everyone. (and yes a couple of GFPs..... I can't help it..... honest! )

As I said last night, bowsprit shrouds are done. Although it doesn't really look it in the photos, they are, in fact, equal length. I've sort of reached a natural stopping point this time, nothing really half done. About the only thing I'll do is brush on some matte medium to protect the rigging I've done in the last 2 weeks.

    Wes,

I know precisely what you mean, because I am exactly the same. Whether we are building a Connie, SoS, Mayflower or Victory, we can only build our models to look the way which we, ourselves, want them to look. Whether we choose to go with how someone else (the kit designer) has chosen, or by referencing paintings, or by cross-checking historical records, I think it is ultimately up to the individual to decide how he/she wants their own build to look.

Now not wishing to muddy the waters further for Connie builders, I include a pic of the latest book I have purchased ...

The following is a quote from the pen of Mr Roosevelt:

"There is a curious parallelism in the errors of (all) sides (of historical research). For example, the American, Mr Low, writing in 1813 tells how the Constitution, 44 (guns), captured the Guerriere of 49 guns, while the British lieutenant Low, writing in 1880, tells how the Pelican, 18 (guns) captured the Argus of 20 guns. Each records the truth but not the whole truth, for although rating 44 and 18 guns the victors carried respectively 54 and 21 guns, of heavier metal than those of their antagonists."

I bought this book because I have been a student of history almost my entire life. And I admit that I have a near insatiable appetite for the history of any project which I am working on.

    But 54 guns ?!?!

I must confess that this was a detail which I had never encountered before. I am currently scratching my head pondering where to put the additional 10 guns, as I really do not wish to challenge the authority of Theodore Roosevelt !!!

(I'll get back to you if I find any mention of the transom details in this book.)

    Thanks again, everyone!

Every time I turn around there seems to be more new faces hanging around my build log..... And that's a wonderful thing.

Well...I did manage the bowsprit shrouds this afternoon. A little bit of a challenge, seeing as the heart has to be set in a splice at one end. Effectively a served, hard eyesplice (a hard eye being any eyesplice with a thimble or heart, as opposed to a soft eye, without). Had to take care not to pull out the faked splice when continuing the serving elsewhere on the line. But time draws near to start cleaning up the shipyard yet again. Can't ever seem to get enough time there to do all the things I want to....

But, you have to tell to the crew who will climb to top about the gap...

Lets call it a new old ship... I guess that's about the best description

Winter layup is generally dependant on cargo availability and the closing of the St. Lawrence Seaway, which usually shuts down Dec. 29-31. Bulkers (which I work on) usually don't work much beyond that point, some self unloaders can work later on the upper lakes, the Soo closes Jan 15, which shuts down Lake Superior, but the salt trade on Lake Huron/lake Michigan can run all winter if needed... (Both good reasons for me to stay on bulkers...)

    A small update with pictures...

Fore preventer stay now installed as well as the outer bobstay. Lots of fun making those fully served strops.... hrmm...

Of course all this ropework around the same area of the bowsprit encourages yet another GFP

Next up I figure I'l go after the bowsprit shrouds, I stand a chance of getting them down before I have to go back to work. Boomkins will wait until later-ish. Then I'll go after the first round of ratlines. No I'm not putting that off, I just don't want to get in to such a lengthy process and have to stop. I want to be able to get them all done over the course of a solid week's work (I'm assuming a week... I dunno, could be longer ). Looking ahead, I'm going to also want to get the jeer tyes rigged up before things get too buried.... probably use them as a diversion from rattling...  anyway, I'm rambling a bit.... so much to do, so little done...

    I looked....I looked.....looked all around
found all this text,  but no ship to be found
a perilous thought,  I thought with a frown
the Mirage is in peril,  the Aggie's in town

to build these three ships,  a huge feat to be sure
to show it can be done,  we'll leave it to Sjors
to watch him build cannons, 64 the score
only to pause and wonder, which one were they for

we're all taking bets......the numbers they say
on how many times by Sjors,  the box opens in a day
to gaze at the beauty,  the pieces and parts
bright shiny brass,  dead eyes and hearts

to celebrate the coming of this wild new build
I'll run to the fridge,  where I keep the beer chilled
and raise one to you,  on your new feat
I'll get off my soapbox....and take my  'saved' seat

yes.........I found your build.........I couldn't believe that I missed it.  I know I have been lax in my poetry.......so I thought I'd whip this one up for you.   I have muliple builds.....tis true.........but not like these!   these are big-a** ships!  you didn't fool me for a moment with those pictures.......you don't have a model of the thames........and look at the cannons........they have Mobbsie's signature muzzles
thanks for saving me a seat....I wouldn't miss this for the world.  the admiral tells me that I'm infatuated with two girls......Itaka bow and Kissimyae stern....I had a laugh when she came out with that      very nice of Mobbsie to send you that plaque.....going to be a special touch to the stand.   I'm sure that if you do try and fit something together........you'll post some pictures for us to see

Thanks, Keith & Buck.  This is one of three I am working on (a little at a time).  Doing one solid hull, one POB amd one POF.  Here is a comparison of the scales for the 3:
The Harriet Lane was 180 feet in length, the Ranger is based on the William Doughty plans for a 51 ton revenue cutter of about 57 feet on deck, and the Emma C. Berry is about 40 feet between perpendiculars.  All are nearly the same size as a model - just the bits and pieces are a lot smaller on the HL than the others!

The construction of the shadow box, and addition of the 'frames',  has been completed:

You'll note they are quite dark (60% Lt. Oak stain) as I want that contrast after planking.  The color is a very even although the photo doesn't show that.

I think this is a very cool feature on the model.  However, if it's not your cup of tea you can either leave it out or plank over it.

The only thing of special note here is that the sheet containing the identical laser cut 'frames' is labeled 'Top' so you know how to orient them.  I'd advise you place a small mark on the unexposed (inside) surface so you don't loose track.  There's not much difference.

Will now move on to framing the stern.

Not much progress to report, but I think I know how I am going to handle the repair.

As you can see below, the jibboom has broken off cleanly at the mast cap.

As a result, all of the fore stays etc. are now rather slack.

I am going to replace the jibboom and all of the fore stays - a couple were not particularly great anyway.  When i do that, I should be able to get a nice uniform tension on them all, and also increase slightly the tension on the back stays (rear most shrouds?)
