trippwj reacted to augie in US Brig Syren by Augie - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64
SUCCESS !
The case has been completed. Amazingly, everything fit :D . Frankly, I can't believe it.
In addition, Syren exhibited her maneuverability (and sheer tenacity) in negotiating the perilous voyage from basement to home port. The predictable 'I think it should be going the other way' battle was encountered and victory seized from the jaws of defeat. Callie, the ships' cat, now has free run of the workshop once again with all rigging now under glass.
On the glass, I was looking for non-reflective but couldn't find it locally. Still, she looks great. And, although ME specifies 1/8" glass for the case, I went with 3/32 which is plenty strong, lighter and actually fits perfectly in the pre-cut slots (after some final sanding). I'd estimate the total weight in the neighborhood of 20 pounds.
As advertised, the fit in the cabinet space is tight.
About 20 pages ago, I penned a list of thank you's and overall impressions about the project. It's been a happy time for me and, I hope, for those who followed along. I could not, would not, have finished without your encouragement. Thanks to each and every one of you out there on MSW.
So now, in a (very) few days, we shall begin on Confederacy. Her shipping crate has yet to be opened. I'm hoping I can do her justice.
And with that, we shall now secure this thread.

Thanks Grant, Augie and Jason for your suggestions and help with this matter. :)
I have made a couple of what I think are acceptable cathead pulleys, I used Grant and Augies method by drilling three holes in line for each pulley, then using my home made chisel cut out the slots. I then took some 3mm dowel and drilled the centre then using my razor saw cut the pulley to a thickness of 1.5mm, these were then pinned and glued into the cathead slots, for a first time it's not pretty but it is acceptable.
I'll post some pics Saturday morning.

trippwj reacted to overdale in Patrick O'Brian's Aubry/Maturin Series
I read the O'Brian series over a period of 5 years. Dragged out to last as long as possible. I gave them to my wife and she read them all finishing the last one a year ago with much regret that there were no more. We decided to put them all in a box and hide them away for five years and then start again..Only four more years to go..!
I am particularly impressed with O'Brian's grasp of the period. I'm a bit of a collector and I have a letter written in 1808 by a Royal Navy officer on the 38 gun 5th rate HMS Lively (which was briefly one of Aubrey's ships in the series.) The letter was written to the man's father in Scotland while the ship was docked in Lisbon. It's a long handwritten letter and amongst many other things, mentions politics, prize money, pirates and even a fire in the coal hold. I understand O'Brian used a lot of contemporary ship's logs and letters to frame his stories, reading this letter one could certainly see why.
Here's exactly what's written about the fire.
"On Friday last, a dinner and ball were given on board, a day a little remarkable also on account of the risk we ran of being blown up: for as we were at breakfast the drum beat to quarters and we understood there was a fire forward. It was discovered by the smoke bursting from the coal hole and was immediately messaged to the 1st Lt. and was soon extinguished, having burned through the thickness of one stanchion. The coal hole is divided from the fore magazine only by a thin partition. After flogging the man who had been down there last and thro whose carelessness the accident had happened, the captain expressed his satisfaction at the general reliance and alertship with which every man attended to his duty and provided against accidents of the sort happening again by forbidding any man going down without a midshipman present."
It's a fascinating read and sometime when I'm not so busy I'll do some research into the writer.
Dan.

Hawaiian shirts are fine. I gave up black tie when I left the East Coast. Formal wear is too easily tangled in blueberry bushes.
OK, picked up the glass and got it home all in one piece ----- well, 5 pieces actually.
AND ---- Confederacy hit the porch today .
So I'll be back in business tomorrow. Besides, I don't want to start anything without Sjors back on board.

A little health update.
I think that the new medication are working. After a good night sleep i wake up with no fever ( for the first time in 2 weeks) we also have no internet so I'll be typing this on my I phone. Soon as we have the internet back , we will be both back!

trippwj reacted to mobbsie in HMS Agamemnon by mobbsie - FINISHED - Caldercraft / Jotika - 1/64
Hi Guys,
I would like to thank everybody for your very kind birthday wishes, I had a lovely day with a bit of modelling, a lot of family and a whole lot of cake, unfortunately no booz due to medications.
Anja, thanks for the song, it was so funny to watch my 2yr old grandson doing the dog dance.
Kevin, I wish you the best of luck in getting some Tulle, I found some on the internet but unfortunately it was not the pattern I needed ( diamond ), I also searched all the habidashery shops in Harwich and Colchester, nothing, so good luck mate. If you do find some perhaps you could let me know.
Andy, he's pretty "armless" at the moment, the spear is made of a very soft alloy and sure as eggs is eggs it's gonna get bent up, so for now it stays off.
Hamilton, were both on the same day mate, 21st.
Geoff, I know that Caldercraft do do an awfull lot of research on the colour schemes of their kits and they have produced their range of paints based on samples taken from Victory, for the Aggy they do say that the colours are right for that period, to me they are boring and so you see the result.
Thank you all for the positive comments on the stern colour scheme, it's not accurate but I like it.
The stern is now completed, rudder chains, gun port lids and lanterns are fitted, now to start on the front end. No pics just yet but soon.
One question perhaps you could help me with, I would like to put some sheaves in the catheads but am having a bit of agro cutting the slots to take them.
My question is, How do I cut the slots in the Catheads which measure 5mm x 5mm.? All I have apart from hand tools and no chisels is a Rotocraft multi purpose.
Thank you all once again.

You must be a mindreader Mark. I've already recquisitioned the dining room table for final assembly and was hoping Sjors will be recovered for popcorn duties. It'll be a big day around here and all are invited .

trippwj reacted to sarge in New Bedford Whaleboat by sarge - Amati - 1/16th scale
Sorry for the delay. Has I said at the start this was in part going to be slow due to my shift work schedule. But I now have 5 days off so with a little bit of luck will get some progress made. (subject to the Captain's Orders and having a break to watch the F1 race at SPA) Onwards...
Some days ago I dry fitted all the bulkheads to the Keel piece to make the False Core. All appears to be well. The joints are a little on the tight side, in fact a little too tight when the glue is applied. Progressing they were all glued in and were / are upright and square. I did notice at this time though that the bulkheads (number 2 and 9) at the stern and bow ends didn't sit flush with the ends of the keel piece, but thought no more at this time.
The ill-fitting Bow Bulkhead (2) - Stern has same fault.
After they were dry and the clamps removed the entire structure was offered up to the plans I then noticed that the entire thing was +/- 5 mm over length. This was undoubtedly caused by the design fault in the laser cut parts. Solution... out with the Isopropyl Alcohol and break open the joints. Re cut the joint some 2.5 mm back by hand as it was not possible to get the core into or under any machinery due to the other bulkheads and then reassemble.
The remade Bow Bulkhead joint.
Progress to-date - False Keel Core ready for assembly of Bow and Stern pieces then the internal planking can begin.

Not much progress to report, but I think I know how I am going to handle the repair.
As you can see below, the jibboom has broken off cleanly at the mast cap.
As a result, all of the fore stays etc. are now rather slack.
I am going to replace the jibboom and all of the fore stays - a couple were not particularly great anyway. When i do that, I should be able to get a nice uniform tension on them all, and also increase slightly the tension on the back stays (rear most shrouds?)

Wayne,
Thanks for stopping by... ...having just made a relo...I'm certain you are familiar with the nuance of dealing with a designer.... ...particularly when they live with you.. :D :D :D
Per,
Thanks for the visit.... I have your card and will be in contact if things start to deteriorate..... :D :D
And thanks to Mark,( mtaylor) and the laminating jig he made for the Licorne. I needed to do something for the cap rail since I did not wish to use plastic. I had recalled the jig from some previous surfing and kind of remembered the principle.
So I traced the bow outline and staked out the radius. The requirement is for about a 5mm rail so i used 3-2mm pieces. (they measured slightly smaller than 2mm) After pinning them in place on the traced radius, I 'painted' the up side with dilute Elmers. After about 6 hours of drying, I took it out.....and it remained to form!!!! :o :o I then glued the down side the same way.
So I repeated the process for the other half and am trying to give it the same dry...the cap rail will be painted and by the time the designer decides on the final color there will be enough coats to hide any seam lines..... :D
(If you look closely in one of the pics, you'll see the first coat of green on the stack bases.....)
