    Hi everyone

Mark's comment about "sub subminiature" has triggered something off in my mind.  What if the owners of Symphony were into models of nuclear submarines? Well, why not make a teeny tiny model of a nuclear submarine to display on the curved cupboard in the saloon?

So I did one and the results are in the photos below.  Ok, pls use heaps of imagination, because...well...because, it's the best I could do!  I need to have Igor's excellent miniaturisation-skills for me to pull it off really well.

I've also started on the staircase leading from the companionway to below deck.

    Hope you enjoy the photos.

    Cheers

    Patrick

Fantastic Patrick, You are pulling out all the stops on this build, The interior certainly looks inviting and that small cutter you carved is just great. Always inspired by your work.

    Hi everyone

Vaddoc gave me a great idea, which was to do a tiny model boat to display inside Symphony.

Well, I had a go and came up with this gaff rigged cutter.  It's tiny, but with a bit of imagination, you can just make it out.

    Here goes.

    Cheers

Hi Dennis, Dave and Frank, as well as everyone who hit the Like button! Greatly appreciated!

I've made a bit more progress in the owner's stateroom in the aft of the ship. Principally, the work to date includes the settee on the port side and also, I've mocked up the double bed that sits on the starboard side. Once I'm satisfied that the bed frame fits, then, I'll do the final frame. I've still got to do a fair bit more work on the surrounding area, eg settee cushions, mattress, cupboards, etc.

    Anyhow, here are the photos.

    Cheers

    Patrick

Hello Patrick, As it turns out you have another fine build coming along. I am inspired by your attention to detail and am still amazed that you have not gone blind working on those small parts. Looking forward to more fine updates.

Made a plank bending jig with wood pegs for the wales & planks. As I was about to glue on the upper wale I stopped & thought about how can I be absolutely sure I have it in all the right places the whole length of the ship?

I looked at the instruction manual showing 7 planks above the upper wale & where they are at each gun port. I made a jig out of plank ends to measure at each gun port to make sure everything would line up where it is supposed to. I realized something was way off - my plank jig didn't line up the way the pictures in the manual did. I couldn't squeeze 7 planks in that space. Figured out that I was using 5/32" pieces for my jig. Only the wale is 5/32". The planks are 1/8". Correcting this I made a new jig with the 1/8" pieces. Now It all fit right. This jig helped me get the correct marking for the upper wale correct. Good thing too as it showed I would have been off a little bit in the middle sections.

Glued & clamed upper wales on each side.

Thanks Ken, Russ, and all the likes.

Ken - Yes, in theory this will let the rudder swing.  In practice, I'll see how it goes when it's assembled to the ship and decide whether to use glue to 'fix' the rudder or not.  Since the ship doesn't have a through tiller, and I didn't build it to allow the ships wheel to actually turn the rudder, it really isn't of much importance to me whether it will end up movable or not, but I was interested in building it this way because I've seen other logs here done this way and I think it just looks much neater than simply dropping the pintles into the brass band of the gudgeon without any sort of receiver for it (that's how the kit is designed).

Both sides are notched out now.  the capstans are in place and the holes are drilled.  I may have to enlarge them a bit more to accept the chain.

some work has been done to the stern / poop deck.  the double benches are in place,  four more capstans,  and the bollards along with some of the other detail has been painted.

the same treatment has been done to the fore deck as well.

I have a few other thing that I'm working on.....there are eight cranes that are to be located on these two sections.  they also lack a bit of detail,  that I think should be there.  I'll show you those next {second enhancement}.   the structure for the stern [ poop deck has been painted.  it was cemented in place on the deck,  the same way I did the long structure for the A deck,  by cementing the tabs from underneath.

the night is still young....I may do a bit more before I call it a night......I'll post it if I do

Thanks for the input everyone. After cutting out a pattern from the plan sheet I came to the same conclusion that Jason did & re-shaped it to slope up more gradually from the last bulkhead so the planks will end up being shaped more like the last pic.

Didn't get much done today. Someone showed up unexpectedly & kept me from my much planned work day in the shipyard. I did get the gun ports painted in preparation for the next step.
