    Hello,

Another update on the construction progress. The hull is done now: keel installed, exterior planked and nailed. I started working inside it.

You must be very organized to keep all the individual futtocks together with their neighbors. There must be over a thousand pieces. What if that box fell over...

The box for the frames kit is ready to be shipped.

I needed 5 copies of the frames. Frames are drawn ½, Frames 28 to 31 and 37 are not drawn, they are identical to other frames. I need both sides, each frame is doubled front and rear, plus 1 copy for later assembly. I drawn 3 copies and I had 2 photocopies.

Next step to sand flush the parts and after prepare the keel and begin the assembly.

The picture with 2 planks is the additional wood quantity I had to add, I failed in my guessing for the preparation of the wood quantity. In fact I guessed it by eye, because it is too much difficult to calculate, and to try to guess it is much  faster.

Thanks Dr. Per & Mike. No worries... will keep it natural - oil finish .

Today is very productive day and I begin preparing wood for upper planking.

Lower planking is finished . Final sanding is not complete yet, it is just 220 grit for rough sanding.
Now it is time to free model from upside down position and start on upper planking and wales.

My First attempts in carving...     . Very enjoyable but slow work, with pleasing results  .
At first I was thinking to make 3D models  and complete them on CNC milling machine, but investment would be too high for now. So, everything will be hand made.

To make a little break from planking I started work on stern decoration. All kit parts are going to be replaced with boxwood.

This post brings to completion the hull stage of the build.

Pegasus back in her temporary case

This is one of the last photo's I took of Pegasus on 22 February 2017.

I am currently working on the reconstruction of the Masting and Rigging part of the Log. This will be combined with this part once it is done.
As you can see there is a lot of log to be reconstructed.

I realized that before I could add the shroud lines that the pendants had to be installed first. So first I had to make thimbles for the ends. I started with 3/16" rod, drilled the end with a 1/8" bit then cut the groove in the thimble for the rope. Once the rope groove was cut I then cut a guideline for the saw blade to cut the thimble off. With this small a part I inserted the shaft of a Q-tip to retain the thimble on when the final cut was made and saving it from flying through the air. After all were cut they were stained with patina and then rope added.

The pendants were then added to the masts at their appropriate lengths. Will post a picture later on.

Next I made a setup to use my Sherline lathe as a serving machine for the shroud lines. I glued a clip to a brass rod for the chuck and glued another clip to the point of the live center. I used an Allen wrench in a tool post with a small clip to hold the thread spool in place. The thread was then held at a length of 5 inches between the clips and served by holding slight tension on the thread once tied securely to the chuck end of the line turned on the lathe at a very slow speed feeding the thread to the underside of the line being served. It takes a little practice to get the feel but once it is the serving goes quickly. I found that by using the second hand fingers sliding the thread back and forth as you progress it evens out the thread. The lathe speed is almost as slow as you can go. Here are pictures of the set up I am using.

Now back to rope work. Slowly but surely.

Now that the Dirty Dozen is until control and ready for the museum, the new Chapter for the book is done with CD's burned and will be mailed Monday to the publisher I am back to the Constitution. Since I have limited building space I will follow the process I did on the Niagara and rig up the masts a level at a time. I started by making ropes for the lower shrouds with my Model Expo rope walk somewhat modified. When I get tired of making ropes I add deadeyes to the fighting tops using 26 gauge black anodized copper beading wire. First I wrap the deadeye and twist a 3/8" tail that is inserted into the oval hole to the front and glued in place. Once all deadeyes are in place I use a 1/32" drill bit to clean the hole next to the 3/8" tail as a guide. Once the hole is drilled clean I cut the excess tail flush to the bottom surface. Next I twist a loop using a .040" drill bit stem held in a pin vise and cut a 1/16" tail and then glue the loop into the hole. I then add more CA to each location to assure a tight glue joint for both the deadeye and loop. After all the deadeyes were in place I added the guard rail.

Here is the guard in place.

Here are the staged ropes for the shrouds.

    Now back to deadeyes.

Have to mention that I am building this kit as Zoran (from MarisStella)  is sending me updates to his manuals. Did I mention how helpful Zoran has been, very polite and usually replies within 24 hrs. Have to remember the time difference. OK enough with the shameless plug, back to the shipyard.

I finished the second layer planking of the hull. I applied one coat of natural stain.
It is by far not a perfect planking job. I guess practice will make perfect. One side is better than the other.
The next step is to touch up the yellow ocre and the black here and there. The final step of this hull will be one or two coat of poly.

1:12? That's gargantuan. No longer a model but a true small yacht. A very VERY detailed small yacht. Would be very cool to see. I love the 74s and can't see enough of them. Keep up the beautiful work Gaetan.

    Hi Pierre,

I was keeping a log  but it was more for construction details, now it is just the build log on MSW.
On MSW 1.0 we saw another 74 at 1/24 and weight was 130 pounds. It was difficult to move it upstair. The guys were strong men.
Bigger door, bigger home, bigger workshop, bigger ship; it took years to be installed as now. There are a lot of wires and some heavy machinery. The most difficult to bring in was the Hardinge lathe, quite heavy. With that lathe, over 1 ton, I understood what turning without vibrations means. I am satisfied with the installation and it' s versatility. Having the medium tools on wheels is a big plus. Having the tool at the right place at the right time can save a lot of time and a lot of walking.

There could be another possibility  a 74 at 1/12 but made in 3,4, ,5,  or 6 parts slices, may be I should ask Karl to come to help me.

Late to the party Gaetan, but I hope I can find some standing room somewhere?  I will enjoy this build; I have followed all your others so this will be a masterpiece with all that practice

Very interesting to see just how much time and wood goes in this. Wondering if you are keeping a time log on this project and also what the weight of the final build will be. Agree with other post regarding needing a bigger door, I was wondering about the muscles needed to move such a piece.
