    Thanks for the comments 👍

I've now completed the keelson assembly or the patience tester as its now called in my home 🤣

So many joints on 4 pieces of wood that as I have found have to be spot on or it will just not fit.  Making the parts was not too hard but getting them to fit takes literally hours.  I didn't have to remove too much material to do this I just had to work out where to remove it from.  This was for me one of those jobs where it would be far too easy to remove loads of wood and end up with bad joints.

Cutting the notches in the curved part of the keelson was interesting as its so easy to loose the correct angle of the cut.  I found that the best way of doing this was to mill out the vertical angles first with a 1mm end mill and then remove the centre afterwards.

I was also amazed at just how little glue is required to hold the whole assembly in place.  Because its such a high fit I only used a very small amount which was great as there was virtually no clean up to do.

I do have one small issue - I just could not get the keelson to get fully down towards the stern.  I have a small gap of less than 1mm so I really need some opinions on this.  Do I just leave it as it is or should I make up some filler out of PVA and sawdust to fill the gap?  Its a bit too small I think to successfully put slivers of wood in but I would appreciate others thoughts.  I also still need to make a piece to fill the gap between the apron and the first frame but that's my next job.  I cannot do any more work for two weeks as I've got family staying and they need my time but I'll get back on this when I can.

    Cheers Mark

    Lower Deck (cont.)

Again the order of build seems important to decide.
The following seems easier BEFORE I start, but we’ll see if it remains so.
    1)Waterway
    2)Ceiling planking/strakes
    3)Bitts,Pump, coamings etc
4)Deck planking.( on previous builds I found it easier to plank to, rather than fit things after)

The lower deck waterway is 1.6mm thick, beveled slightly against hull to allow the sitting of the strikes, and towards the planks to match the 1mm plank thickness. To be done after planks are fitted.
The nominal width is 6.36mm but are cut from wider pieces to allow for the curve of the hull.
Scarf joints as suggested, the foreward 3 pieces are made and fitted first, then the aftmost. The missing piece needs a small adjustment to fit.
The foremost piece meets the Deck hook and Eking piece at stem.
Aft, I made a small beam athwartship for Beam#19, to neaten-off the deck planks.
(made pieces in the usual way-photocopy given plan, stick to blank, extra wood left on inner surface and fitted. They needed surprisingly little adjustment for the curve.)

I attach photos of the completed centre deck with nails inserted. The deck has been sanded and scraped. It is not 100% finished as I have not sanded it with a finer grade sandpaper nor waxed it. This will occur much later when it is inserted in to the model. Now I must turn my attention to drilling the holes on the left and right parts of the main deck and inserting nails in to those. I do this manually with my jewellers drill.

    Thanks.
Bringing this machine back to working condition gave me great satisfaction

All sails are stitched and sewn.
Now the bonnets are tied. I probably misunderstood the drawings and all this knotwork is not historically correct.
But it looks neat (to me). And there's a logic to it
The bonnet is very quick and easy to remove. Just loosen the rope on the left side and pull . All the rope come loose and the bonnet falls off the sail.

    Drawing/result

    method :
    Make holes

    "sewing"

Sewing an "eye" to both the sides of the sail.

    tie up (both sides)

    front and back

    All sailes (except the spritsail)

    Made cleats (D18 / 2)

    Cleats glued on the yards.

    And again a little update.

At this stage, I have always had a problem with handrails with a lot of posts, which are difficult to prepare to be identical and fit. So this time I made them in the form of 1 mm thick "combs" glued in pairs, to which I glued 0.5 mm thick strips at the upper edge and masked the whole thing from the top with a 3 mm wide strip. To make it more understandable, below is a piece of such a handrail and the effect in the photo.

A much stronger solution. And how long does it take to cut these combs out of 1mm cardboard? I don't know, because I cut it with a laser 🙂 But if you think about cutting many posts to the right size and giving them appropriate bevels at the ends, the workload may be comparable.

Another batch of boards appeared on previously prepared bulkheads. Unfortunately, I did not retouch the side edges of each board (they were supposed to "hide" between the beams) and you can see some white spots. I hope that the carvings will hide it a bit and "soften" it.

The time has finally come to close the stern. From two layers, I prepared the entire bas-relief and glued it to the taffrail (asymmetrical - I know, but it will stay that way). On the edges, I glued thin strips (0.5 x 1.0 mm) to mask any inaccuracies. And just like with the side handrails, I also made the stern one in the form of a "comb", additionally engraving a small pattern. I am always afraid at this stage that all dimensions have been lost, and here is a real surprise: the laser-cut aft handrail fit literally without any adjustments. Finally, there are the horizontal protruding ends of this aft handrail, and this is how she looks today:

The real challenge was making the first piece for the ship: the bow ornament. I made some mini carving tools by grinding sewing needles, and I'm rather happy with the result. At least I think it looks quite like the original drawing.

I finished the head deck frame. Again, I came across different dimensions of the drawing of a lion statue on the plan sheets ..😵

I had to lower the lion's back..

This is the size of a lion statue ..

Now the statue will fit under the head deck..

It really has been a while since I posted. Main reason for that is that my 'interest' to post and to be active on a forum had been substantially reduced some time ago due to things that happened on another forum. There was a member continously giving off on me and my way of working. Always in a sneaky way, never directly but always below the belt. Always in other threads, never in mine. A lot of other members saw it as well and also had problems with him. But as always in this world, moderation can do little if no direct evidence or direct attacks.
So when he even started becoming personal, like commenting on personal circumstances like how ridiculous it was if certain people had or used certain tools, and what sort of people were not belonging in this hobby and doing it all wrong... clearly to be identified that I or my tools were meant, It broke with me.

So I drew back from forums at all for some time.
I am very low profile now, but still active building. I just thought to let you all know.

here some pictures of status from a few weeks ago.

Well just before we are of on hols (we are going after the main season, nice and quiet:)) a last update.

As said the deckplanking and more details of the deck added.

This is were we stand today.
Here I have chosen for the waterway of the orlop for 14mm broad oak. Its a little too much (it should have been 12 according to the scale. The first parts has been fitted now I will finish this waterway first in whole to the rear and then work the rest of the 10mm dekplancking to the waterway.

See you all in a couple of weeks

I've now roughed out this piece and glued it into place.  It will get its final shape when I fair the outside of the hull.  I'm not entirely happy with it but its my fault for not thinking ahead.  A very small additional triangular piece had to be made for both sides to make the transition from the block to the sternpost smooth.

I did have difficulty recessing the inside of the piece because it was difficult to hold due to its shape.  In hindsight what I should have done was put a couple of screws into it where it wouldn't notice and then clamp onto the screws.  They could have then been simply removed before gluing.  I'll save that one for next time!

I think my build will slow down for a bit now as my next job is to fair the inside of the hull.  I think that this job is going to take quite a long time to get right but I'm looking forward to it.  Once the hull has been faired inside I'll have a go at making the keelson, stemson and sternson.

    Cheers Mark

With lots to do around the house, I've not had much modeling time.  I did finish the deck planking, though!
I wanted as much deck framing as possible to show, but I still needed to accommodate three long gums.  I started the holly planking at the outboard mortar pit bulkhead and worked my way to the waterway.  The margin p[lank was custom fit.  It turned out to be as wide as the others at it's forward end, with a bit of a taper aft.  It turned out pretty well.
