And finally, a Grecian paint set:
Grecian paint set – VANGUARD MODELS

A big thank you to Jim for the superb build, pics and text for the manual!

I have attached a pic of the box label. Like the actual model, the box is long and sleek..

Now, I continue to work on Trial Cutter, the 14th kit. Next week, I will receive a truly massive shipment from Italy of photo etched sheets for almost all of my range (Fifie. Zulu, Sphinx, Duchess, Grecian etc.) plus my Trial Cutter sample sheets, so I can continue with this model.

Also included is a new set of Speedy PE. This kit will be out of stock (I think we have one left) until I have completed a little re design and updated the plans and manual, which I shall do once the Trial Cutter is complete.

That's a brilliant build and a brilliant design! A stunning ship with those "go fast" lines. Thanks Jim and Chris - I'll seriously be considering adding the kit to my (so far...) meagre stash.

Very nicely done James, some great deck detailing on that kit.

Here's a pic I took of the optional flag. This is perfectly screen printed on both sides and has zero bleed.

I'll fit this to Grecian this week.

I will probably buy this kit as a side project at some point later in the year. I was given the Royal Yacht in bottle kit as a gift today which will be also be a side project.

There will also be an optional American flag. I'll post another picture next week showing the flag mounted to the model.

And a very nice job Jim has done on Grecian, too!

For the production kits, I have changed the anchor hawse to something a little smaller in diameter. I have just completed the build manual, and have only the box label to complete, which I shall do tomorrow, with all files being sent off on Monday for printing.

Here's the front page of the manual. There will be a pre-order open early next week too
At that point, you'll also be able to download and look at the manual.

Options will be available for a period-correct flag and also a limited number of PE copper plate sets instead of the standard copper tape that's supplied.

What a great finish, James! And I agree with Chuck that this lovely kit should be a big hit, especially with those of us Yanks who have been clamoring for American subjects from VM.

Very nicely done Jim.   And Chris that is a lovely design and subject for a kit.  It should be a very successful seller.

A card template is made to aid adding the ratlines. I have drawn lines on these, 6mm apart.

    Upper shrouds are now fitted.

And then the rest of the timber is built up. Yards, spars.....whatever you want to call them. I knew at least one guy who thought it was a big deal.

The anchors are 3D printed and have pear stocks with cartridge paper for the iron bands.

    The final updates.

The last week has seen me build up the mast stuff and rig Grecian. She now sits complete on my bench.

First up is the bowsprit. This is a very simple structure with hardly any tapering of parts.

The assembly now slots to the hull and the gammoning is added.

Grecian doesn't have a spritsail yard, making her look quite sleek. Still lots of cord to rig this area though.

Mast work begins with the crosstrees.

These are then slotted to the shaped lower mast sections, and then fitted out.

The mass are now added and the shroud lines attached. Once complete, they are tied down with even tension via deadeyes/lanyards.

Second Planking – Right-Hand Side Second Planking Started
I have started the second planking on the right-hand side. I have completed the section down to where the main wale will be fitted. I still need to clear all the gun ports. I will be using a butt shift pattern for fitting the remaining planks down to the keel. I will also be adding the lateral bend for planks fitted around the bow area. I will taper the stern planks once I have planks under the transom. If all goes to plan,a s with the right-hand side, there should be no need to fit any steelers.

Second Planking – Right-Hand Side Second Planking Progress
The work on completing the second planking on the right hand side is progressing well. I only have 5 strakes left to fit. I have used a butt shift pattern and this has made fitting the planks so much easier. As with the left and side I fitted 192mmL planks, noting 96mmL and 64th scale planks would be more representative of the actual ships 6m planks.

Around the bow area I have used the lateral bend method to ensure I have a good fit, and I now fully understand why Chuck's method works so well.

After completing the planking under the transom, I started to taper the stern planks which require a double taper. From the midships they are tapered down to 4mm at the narrowest point. From there a reverse taper is applied up to 4.5mm where the plank sits against the stern post. By keeping the faith the tapering (at bow and stern), and regularly checking the taper points, no stealers will be required.

The planks, in the attached photo’s, look a bit messy, but once the planking is complete and they have been sanded smooth it will look much better.
