Ferit reacted to Dan Vadas in HMS Vulture 1776 by Dan Vadas - FINISHED - 1:48 scale - 16-gun Swan-class sloop from TFFM plans
Axletrees
The Hind Axletree should have had a pair of rebates where it fits up to the bracket, but I decided not to show that feature as it would look identical to the way I have rebated them anyway. It was much easier to simply enlarge the rebates in the brackets.
I had a few attempts at turning the stub axles into the trees. As I had to use a 4-jaw chuck it wasn't all that successful, at least time-wise (it took to long to accurately set them up). I came up with the idea of drilling the ends of the trees with the mill and inserting two lengths of 2mm dowel (these were trimmed down off the longer lengths after gluing) - perfect results and it didn't take very long at all . There is a small step on the inboard end of each axle to prevent the Truck from fouling the bracket. I cut these on the Byrnes saw :
The Fore Axletrees are a different size and shape to the hind ones. I made them in similar fashion, once again using the saw to cut the spacing rebate :

Ferit reacted to RiverRat in RATTLESNAKE 1780 by RiverRat - Mamoli - 1:64 - Massachusetts privateer
More stuff....
I added caprails to the waist. The kits walnut seems to be about as light as walnut gets! Not what I was envisioning. I'll probably stain all the rails with ebony or similar.
With the bulwarks planked, I decided to make the bulkhead at the break of the quarterdeck. I've never seen one of the kit's metal bulkheads used; not sure how it would look painted. It IS about 3 mm short of reaching the bulwarks on both sides, and is a little tall, though there is material that could be filed away. The base actually is close to the decks camber.
I cut some manila folder paper to fit the opening and used that to make a base on some 1/32" model aircraft plywood from my R/C days. Easy to shape and cut out the openings. I drew up a plan and transfered it to the ply. Simply fill in the lines with wood!
The frames are 1mm cherry, 2mm and 3mm wide. (41 pieces!, though I could have done with fewer) I filled in between all these with 0.5 mm walnut strips. A ledge was left for the windows to rest on. The approx 8x9mm windows are painted boxwood I had left over from the stern lights. Such a pain in the @sh working with the littlest pieces.
A little secret for just you folks! After the frame parts were assembled, I noticed things seemed to be leaning from vertical. I had worked from the center outwards and either misdrew the lines or placed the center piece wrongly. Shhhhhhh! don't tell anyone! Not really noticable looking casually at it. No re-do here.
Oops. Forgot to add the doorknobs before the photos. They'll be pin heads darkened with "Sharpie" marker. I made some "L"-shaped hinges from black floppy-disk plastic. Too finicky to handle with my forceps. If I figure out a better way to handle them, I'll add them. Otherwise, I'm happy to leave it as is.
Here it is in place, unglued....
Progress!
Cheers,
Brian

Hi Buck,
We say in my country: "With the changing of your locality you get more internal space" (translation is like this)...
I hope this changing brings you the goodness...

Ahoy J.Pett
You had written a symphony...
The nails are the notes... The strips are the stave... Where is the treble clef? Beakhead?...

Thank you Jason for the suggestion... Good idea that I have never heard...
That was registered... I can try it but I have starched the ropes already... They shouldn't absorb the Indian ink???

Hi Juergen,
You are right and have a very kind manner in your notice...
I don't think that the shrouds were white...
But I decided to left them as the kit had supplied...
I think my decision is wrong but I don't want another effort to buy and replace the ropes, I am an obsessive man and sometimes this temper fatigues me and sometimes to break this temper makes me feel happy... that situation is one of them...

Thanks for compliment.
Belaying pins - at first I only intended to modify the belaying pins from the kit. Because I will need more of them, I decided to make my own. They are a little bigger, but at the first attempt it is not so bad.

Sjors, ZyXuz - appreciate your interest and support
The carronade assembly line is in high gear, and have made some tweaks to my guinea pig carronade (v3) which I hope to replicate, apologize for yet more carronade pics...
1 - breaching rope hole made using 20 gauge wire - not called for in instructions but seems pretty ubiquitous
2 - added training tackle eyebolts which are also not identified in the instructions - although I will not rig training tackles as I think it could be too 'busy'
3 - added some wheels to the trunnion which seems more authentic, and it also help align the angle of the base with the camber of the deck. I thought about trying to use the white metal parts supplied but they proved to be too high. In the end, I used some small slices of the supplied 2mm dowel and cut in half for the wheels
4 - handles added to the elevation screw base - I used a some of the small brass etch eyebolts and cut the head off, seams a nice match, the Caldercraft supplied wire is steel colour. Decided to leave the elevation screw brass coloured, should mellow a little with age
If anyone has any other suggested improvements would love to hear them.

Thank you Mark, for your kind comment, much appreciated...
Even if it's my decision to go with natural hemp color in all ropes, it sounds very good that light linen color is acceptable in modelling... Thank you again for the encouragement...
"On the color... the tar darkened with age"... She is a fetus yet...

Very easy Ferit,
In the morning after the morning coffee I'm sitting behind the pc and see what was going on during the night.
For us it is night and for the rest of the world daytime.
Then I go to the build and a few hours later I go back to the pc and see if there is some news.
If it is, I'm responding…..
Then It goes fast…...
So this is my last post for today , Anja has to go out of her bed at 5.00 am and I go with her to make her breakfast…..
When she comes home from work, I'll be just away for my work because I have the late shift from 15.45 till 00.45…..
Enjoy your day, evening or night and I'll see you tomorrow.
