Gerhardvienna got a reaction from Martin W in SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse 1897 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - scale 1:144 - POF - first German four stacker of the Norddeutscher Lloyd line
Hi Nils
For detecting colours I always use the "RGBfinder". Easy to use and can be done on the screen

Isnt that why we are doing what we are doing?
If it were a fantasy build, nobody would care, but as we try to do "dowsized copies", they must be accurate. Just my two cents...............

Gerhardvienna got a reaction from JerryTodd in USS CAIRO by Gerhardvienna - RADIO - live steam
Hi johnhoward
Thank you and Cher for that, once more some new views from the engines. Especially the first three pics show the engines from another angle, I`ve never seen in any forum or website! There will be some differencies in my build, due to the conditions for sailing the ship by RC. But most of the components of the engines will be really close to the original one!
Meanwhile I made the drawings and .stl files for the paddlewheel bearing blocks, they will be 3D printed. This saves a lot of working time, and makes it easier to work with.
All measurings on the drawings are in 1/10th mm!
Regarsd; and thank you all for watching!

Today I found time for the comparison of the carriages, my version fits almost to the drawings johnhoward showed earlier. It`s a matter of a few 1/10mm so I will lwt it as it is.
The red drawn parts show how I made them.

Hi johnhoward
Thank you, great pics, and many thanks to Cher too. NOW i know, why I`m a Cher-Fan
For smoe reasons I found no time to compare my version of the light carriage with your drawings, these photos show a lot more than I had before from the original thing!
Best regards

This is a beautiful Fokker. However, once you add up the cost of the individual parts for this 1/32 scale version, one could kick in just a little more $$ to buy and build this 88 inch wingspan museum scale piece and really fly it.

Gerhardvienna reacted to Patrick Matthews in 3D Printing Functional Bronze Propellers
In functional boat and ship models, many modelers use brass props made of stamped blades soldered to machined hubs. Nicer props, having a more realistic shape, are made by casting in brass or bronze. The process used for these is lost wax, or investment, casting. Usually, the waxes are made by injecting wax into a rubber mold; the rubber molds can be made from a carved or machined master.
Should you need a unique prop design, you’ll need to commission a master and a mold; don’t forget to allow for casting shrink when you specify the master! Need a left and a right? Twice the masters and molds.
Another option? 3D print the waxes- no need for masters, no rubber molds, and complete freedom to scale and mirror the design.
BTW: You can also machine the waxes on a 5-axis mill… but that’s another challenge.
But if you can create a 3D CAD model of the prop, and don’t mind machining the bore yourself, you can use very convenient 3D printing services like Shapeways to source your own custom props.
In this example, I made some props for Monterey Clipper fishing boats, using the Yuba-Hicks “weed cutter” design that many of these boats carried. While it’s possible to draw a convincing prop from scratch with some basic knowledge of prop blade shape, I had the benefit of the original factory drawing to work from:
CAD rendering of the design:
Raw cast bronze prop from Shapeways- 2.5” diameter:
From the same CAD model, a 2.25” opposite hand prop (on left):
Machining the bore and threads on my lathe:
Prop with a 3D printed Hicks engine model:
The 2.25” prop went on this 1:8 scale model Monterey:

Gerhard,
Problems like this are the main reason we are trying to document misleading information or conflicts between published data for the "City Class" ironclads so the modeler is aware of them before spends a lot of his valuable time. I applaud you for striving to achieve the highest degree of accuracy possible in your model.

What a pleasant surprise finding two airplane builds! I haven't visited this site for many months, too many other things to do taking much time.
I read through all your posts and must say "well done." You'll have a great looking model when completed. Yeah, I have been tempted several times to buy myself this kit but I already have too many other projects in the bucket list that have priority. Actually I told myself not to get involved with airplanes any more after i retired from my career in aviation, from mechanicking, flying and engineering and devote the rest of my life with ships, my second love.
I do need to build a 1:350 scale model of a Fokker C-14W float observation plane though. This plane was used on the ship my father was killed in during the battle of the Java Sea and I am getting a model of that ship to do. When I do I'll start a build log here.
In the meantime keep up the good works.
Cheers,

Hi johnhoward
So they were meant as ventilation funnels, i got it now! The position of them should be good to see in the Bob Hill plans, but there is a difference for the ventilation grate. In his side view frames plan the grate seems to be roof shaped, as I made it, in his plansheet "Frame 72 with interior" he shows the same part flat as you made it. I can still make that change, would be no problem, but I must be sure to make the correct decision!

You guys should check this out, 1/32 meant to work with the Wingnut Wings kit(s)? WNW have most of the D.VII versions out already and at least in the fuselage there were definite differences, not sure what version(s) it's meant to work with.
