Thanks, dear friend. I also think that seeing me back is good. As I said, I overloaded my life with so many things, and ... day has only 24 hours. Hope to find more time for her Majesty

Thanks Gerhard. Yes, something is going on, again. I finally find a way how to "make" keel for boat ( thick is less than 1 mm) and now "planking" and adding parts can start

I've been working on the stand for the ship in between times. Here are some progress pics.

Roughly sawn to shape and holes drilled for the openwork, which I've made a start on. The timber is pearwood, from the neighbour's tree. Once it's shaped I'll cut two layers about 4 or 5mm thick to make the ends of the stand.

Smoothed off the outside shape somewhat, and roughed out a bit of pearwood to make the joining strip from. It will fit in a horizontal slot at the bottom to join the two parts of the stand.

When I'm planking sometimes the heads of the pushpins  are too big to fit in the space available, so I've been trimming them down with a Stanley knife.

Unfortunately they aren't all that strong and when you try to adjust the position of one, or take it out with a pair of pliers . . .

It's great fun trying to lever half a push pin out of the plug with a knife blade, without destroying the planking adjoining it.

I'm so sorry Marc.....I try to acknowledge everyone.   you are correct.....sometimes it's good to dabble in something out of the ordinary.   I started building plastic models....seems like ages ago....cripes,  back when I was eight or nine!   of course,  paint came later.....I was too interested in build'in 'em......crash'in 'em.....and then put them back together

if you haven't found it yet Lou,  it's here:
    https://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/14830-thermopylae-by-popeye-the-sailor-sergal-1124-scale/
the kit has a lot of aspects lacking with it......I did the best I could so far.  I should be back to her soon.

hello Piet.......thanks for the good word.  I'm liking the blocks....I think they will dress up this model quite a bit.   way too much thought about which ones should go where though

you didn't offend Gibbs Gerhard,   right now he's preoccupied with squirrels     I did......I cut the fore mast root shorter......a bit too short I think.  it's OK........I think I can manage.   there has been a new development with the Jolly Rogers saga.......can't wait to show it to you all!   at the moment though.....this light is so darn poor......can't get a decent picture of the blocks I have tied on
I'm gonna have to juggle the tables......with the build reaching upward......I need a better light    the kicker is..........is that I knew about this.   I knew I should have cemented in the fore mast first,  before the bow spirit.   I wanted to outfit the mast tree with blocks before I did it.   one of these days I'll smart'in up      update soon

Sorry, did not want to offend the DOG!!!
Why dont you file a bit away from the lower end of the mast to fit it into the hole? If its only the lower hole, noone will see it after.

Thanks, Russ. And thanks everybody for the likes.

I just realised today why I've been having so much trouble, having to cut exaggeratedly curved planks for the bow and stern which get wider and wider as they approach the ends. It all comes down to making the garboard strake far too short due to inexperience. I misinterpreted a tutorial and now have to live with the result. It's far too late to fix it now - if I tried removing the planks I'd destroy the frames because they're so frail. So I'm putting it down to experience and I'll do better on the next model I make. I've found my planking technique has improved as I've gone along, however.

I've been working on the starboard side planking. Here's some progress pics.

On the last photo above you can see the effect of getting the garboard strake wrong - the gap between the top plank and the wale should be pretty much the same all the way along the hull, but it's become far too wide at bow and stern. I won't make that mistake again.

I've got the underwater hull completely planked now, and I'm about to start on the sides. Looking forward to finishing and taking her off the plug at last! The planks are a little wonky - caused by really thin planks over frames not perfectly in line because I'd cut grooves in the plug for them. Another mistake that won't be made a second time.

If ship modelling is all about learning from your mistakes, I've certainly learnt a lot! Still, nil desperandum - I'm having a lot of fun with it and the faults (that are so obvious to me at the moment) won't detract from the final model. And with experience I'm becoming a better modeller.

though I'm not quite ready for the rigging yet,  I figured I'd separate the blocks and see what I have.   I used some on the Gundalow,  so I'm hoping they look better on this model too.   better than the rings they supply in the kit.  I still have the revell Cutty Sark instructions......but the United States instructions are right here in the binder I keep at my desk.   on all of the rigging sheets for this series of Revell 1:96 scale kits,  they have a block identification diagram,  since to create some of them,  an eye needs to be cut off.

so,  with them all laid out..this is what I have,

since I have a better selection of the gray ones,  I will be using them.   trying to give you an idea of how big they are,  I could have used a coin.  I used ruler instead.

eye bolts were added to the channels for the back stay rigging.....the starboard side is done.

the mizzen stay rigging will be done as I've seen with other ship rigging logs...there will also be a block assembly associated with them too.  a pair of c blocks {with an eye cut off} are fastened to the deck at the base of the main mast.

for the main stays,  a pair was tied at the base of the fore mast..

as can be seen,  the port side back stay eye bolts are done.   once I've tied blocks to the masts,  they will be cemented in place.  more to come.

thanks Bob    it's not a bad kit.....it just has a few rough points.

I've on and off this week on her.......later today,  I get to do a brake job on a piece of junk.....lucky me      I showed the remedy for the lower shrouds....I just drilled holes through the furthest point of the slots provided for them,  and it made the task easier.   I did install the bow spirit and the plastic imitation gammoning.....I touched it up this morning and made it look a little better.

I also reported that the carpet monster snatched up one of my fore mast shrouds,  and made off to his cavern lair.   it was an easy rescue.......I was surprised that it wasn't chewed to bits!  it was found in three pieces.....and not in too bad a state.  probably got interrupted by the furry four footers that rule the trees {seen out the window},  and rushed off to intervene the oncoming invasion.
I started to piece it back together......but forgot that I hadn't taken the initial picture of it's rescued state....so this will have to do.  the two halves of the bottom section,  have been somewhat pieced back together.  you might ask why I'm doing this......I think it best to have all the shrouds the same....having hand made ones on the lower,  with the plastic upper ones,  might look a bit weird.
After the mend job.....sanded and painted with flat lacquer......it doesn't look too bad.   I'll likely make a final adjustment when they are in place.

at the moment,  I'm working on the masts,  installing eye bolts for rigging.   I'm using the smallest ones I have.   they may be hard to see.

I'll be sorting out the blocks in a bit.......I have some brown ones {mostly single blocks}.......but I have quite a few gray ones,  and they are a mix of single and double blocks.   I'll likely stick with one color.....chances are I'll dab 'em with flat black anyways.  I'll be touching the eye bolts up to lose the copper look as well.   more soon

Engine stands are set in, but not glued at the time. Before glueing all the parts I must make some smaller changes to the engine timbers, not too much, but a bit of milling or grinding will be needed to fit the brass parts to the timbers. Just waiting for the photos from johnhowards associate to build all the parts in scale, or as close as possible. Then a bit of turning/milling/soldering/cutting...... will take place!
