Gerhardvienna reacted to popeye the sailor in The Jolly Roger by popeye the sailor - Lindberg - 1:130 - PLASTIC
last Tuesday.......I was suffering from work lag. it was a nasty week.....way too many trailer brake jobs! I didn't have the urge to do anything with the wood projects. Wednesday came with not much change, and I knew I had to do something. ........something I could just throw together, without much fuss. since the Jolly rogers was a kit with many problems, I figured.....what the heck, if I have to hack it up, who cares not like I was going to do a log on it, or anything I would forego a lot of painting....no need to be fancy. a few folks here has built it and experienced problems.....from decks not fitting properly......to masts not lining up in the deck wells........poor fitting parts......just a beginning. I noticed that the cannons don't line up in the ports too good. I did this when one particular build was in progress.
there were no hawse holes for the anchors either. I had shown a gent where he could locate them, given how far into the build he was........I know that they should be under the trail boards, but I drilled mine out to show 'em. I'm going to go this route......at least they'll be close.
I had packed her up and put her away.......and now I bring her out again. we had gone to Hobby Lobby......and saw three different kits. the admiral was puzzled.......I was looking at a large scale B24 Libby, but she said no.........ha-rumph! so I picked up some black beading thread, a roll of small chain, and I hope some stuff to do the bow and stern decorations on the Thermopylae. after we left, I remembered that I needed thinner to paint the boats {next week......I got Monday off}. so here's my try with the Jolly Rogers

Gerhardvienna reacted to Philg88 in HMS Warrior 1860 by Philg88 - Billing Boats - 1:100 - First British Ironclad with scratch built side heads per prototype
Chainplates and handrails now all fitted so its onto the deck. I ended up making the rifle proof conning tower out of plasticard, as I defy anyone to bend the 2mm plywood provided to the required shape without it delaminating, splitting or warping. It was then lined with 0.8x3mm stripwood.
Conning tower, compasses and main vent dry fitted to the deck
Now fabricating the deck stairs and capstan.

Hi Pawel,
I've just been visiting H.M.S. Trincomalee in Hartlepool (England) and the stove there is depicted with glowing coals while the cook stands at the other side preparing a meal. I guess if you wanted you might be able to use something like red or orange coloured cellophane ???
Here's the stove - - - the faintly glowing coals can just be seen behind the grill >>>
Edited to add a better photo of the glow -- this was on my wife's phone, I didn't know she had taken this picture! >>>

Impatience, mostly. After all the preamble and preparation, I really wanted to see what she'd look like. If I'd done it in tandem it would have taken twice as long to find out. As she was done on a plug there was no danger of an imbalance of forces from the planks on one side causing her to warp before the others were put on.
Of course, I could have just taken the photos of one side and pretended I'd done both . . .

Hi Eric
Thank you, the second stand is done, now I`ll start planking the hull, and glue some extra needed parts for the engine and boiler mounting in. Photos will follow, when I´m at work with it. Thank you for your kind offer, every detail photo will help for the build. I MUST come to the US and visit Vicksburg some day......................

Hi Pat
Thank you!
The last days I was working on the engine stands, all made from 5 x 5 mm pinewood. The finished part is the starboard stand, the begun one goes to portside.
Some fittings need to be made, this will be the next step.
Regards, and many thanks for your comments, critics and likes!

Hello Carl,
thank you for your very nice comment.
But my works are still not perfect.
I only take pictures of the perfect details ...
In the meantime, I made the
topmast deadeyes and futtock shroud plates for the top of the main mast.
Here are some pictures of how I did it.
The parts are brazed.

Thanks everybody for the likes. Much appreciated. Thanks for the compliments, Gerhard and Martin. I like the shape too. It's nice to be making such an elegant ship.
Martin, you live in Gisborne! We're practically neighbours!
Latest - I've now completed the second last plank on the port side. As mentioned before I had to miss the top one because of the screws in the way. I'll come back to it later. I've put in the drop planks now, and it's looking pretty good. A bit of filling needed, unfortunately, but not too much (it looks a lot worse in the photos than in real life).
I've temporarily packed out the planking at the tail so it lines up as well as possible with the curved gunwale. I'm hoping I don't have to do too much adjustment at this spot. I might have to add another layer of planking to get a smooth line - I won't know till I put in the top plank.
I've not yet used a third of the plank sheeting Woodrat sent me, which is a relief. I was wasting a few at the beginning and I was worried I'd run out before I finished. But it looks like it should be ok.
I've started planking the starboard side. I felt I had to at least make a start on that, otherwise I'd be tempted to rest on my laurels.
And I've worked up a design for the stand for the ship to rest on. This is half of it - it's mirrored at the right hand side (where you can see the slot for the keel). There will be two of these transverse to the hull, about 1/3 of the way in from each end, and sitting on a base running along the length of the ship. I'll be carving it in 3 dimensions in pear wood. The design itself is based on one found on an 11th century openwork Byzantine hanging lamp, so it's appropriate to the time and culture.

Build log part 59...
Update :
for those fellow builders who frequently catching up on the status,.... I put in some overall shots....
The 4 open lifeboats are rigged, they are also equiped with oars (only rudderblades still missing). The two smaller boats will be in the same paint scheme, but without lifelines, as that is too much straining for eyes and hands. The remaining closed boats are waiting for the lifelines to be attached, refer to the pic for one first sample. I decided not to lash on seperate protection covers (canvas)
Nils
the oars are stored on the oposite side to where passengers would step into the boats
The two open boats on the left of the pic have appr. 5 mm less length and a lower sheerboard, they will match in color scheme
The "hard cover" shown here on the sample "closed boat" will be the protection canvas, no seperate lashings under and around the boat.
these are the two smaller (shorter) open, also clinkered double ender boats, that fit into the row of 10 boats per ships side with the others. These boats claim to be 1:144 scale, the figurines are 1:160, but I feel they match together perfectly

Hi Grant,
I'm just catching up with the build. Unfortunately my jaw is hurting from it continually hitting the floor. The work and the results are just amazing. Love the wheel, the planking, the finish, the whole package. Just amazing!!!

Hi johnhoward
WELL; there are some more pics needed, the different engine parts, all the levers and engine steering parts are not shown good in the "official" photos, but I `m not sure if there is a way to come close enough to the engine. Even some details from the pitman arms and their hinges to the engine sliders and the crank will be important for the build. I`ve saved a lot of photos from different resources, but there is nothing specific about that. Thanks in advance to your assiciate!
Later today I will come up with new photos from my build, the engine stands will be ready for building them into the hull as I hope.
Regards
Gerhard
