I'm onto the second last row of planks for the larboard side. I can't put in the top plank because the screws holding the ship to the plug are in the way.

So once I've completed this run of planks I'll start planking the starboard side. I've learnt a fair bit while doing this and I hope the second side will be better.

Planking the tail. Because of the extreme curve I've had to put in a couple of drop planks.

I've sanded the planks down so they look more like the carvel construction they're supposed to be. Still got a way to go, and it looks like I may need to do some filling, and/or I might have to wait till I take the ship off the plug before I complete the smoothing off.

Still, fairly happy with the way it's turning out. It's good to finally have something that actually looks like a ship! And I can't get over what an elegant shape she is.

I'll be at a family memorial service near Vicksburg in August, and was hoping to swing by and visit Cairo then if I can find the time. If you still end up needing any additional photos then, I'd be happy to try. Your cylinder timbers look very nice.

    Hi Pat

    Thank you!

The last days I was working on the engine stands, all made from 5 x 5 mm pinewood. The finished part is the starboard stand, the begun one goes to portside.

Some fittings need to be made, this will be the next step.

Regards, and many thanks for your comments, critics and likes!

    Hi johnhoward

WELL; there are some more pics needed, the different engine parts, all the levers and engine steering parts are not shown good in the "official" photos, but I `m not sure if there is a way to come close enough to the engine. Even some details from the pitman arms and their hinges to the engine sliders and the crank will be important for the build. I`ve saved a lot of photos from different resources, but there is nothing specific about that. Thanks in advance to your assiciate!
Later today I will come up with new photos from my build, the engine stands will be ready for building them into the hull as I hope.

    Regards
    Gerhard

    Gerhard,
I have been contacted by a member of the Missouri Historical Society here in St. Louis who is traveling to Vicksburg this coming weekend and has offered to take any specific photos at the USS Cairo museum that we may desire. I have asked for a close-up of the 12-pdr on the hurricane deck of the USS Cairo mural that we previously discussed and a few other items we need.
If you have any other photo requests, I will be glad to forward them as well.

    Regards,

    Update...

the first open port side boat has been set in place and rigged with the forward pulley. I think I`ll have the two first boats of each side in the open mode, as well as the third boats (also open), but they are a bit smaller, like on the actual ship. The blocks (3mm double sheave ) are out of Chuck`s production, I saved them up at the time he still was producing pear blocks in that size for this application.
All paint touch ups will be done after all the boats are rigged

    Hi johnhoward

Nice progress, this pattern for the deckhouse would be interesting for me, as I dont have the correct measures for the camber. All I have are the bob hill plans, nice but as we now know not correct in all parts......

    Regards
    Gerhard
