Thanks Patrick, as soon as I get The Lindworm ready for rigging I will rig all three ships at the same time. I sometimes get distracted by another design..lol

That is what this forum is all about, we all learn from each other. To bad the rest of the world couldn't get along like we do.

Fun build brings back memories. It was my first ever build 27 years ago.

When I look at the plans I thought the same thing, but I added a word to the clustered which I can't print here. LOL

For my third build I've decided to resurrect the kit I started about 3 years ago, but gave up on because I found the plan sheets so cluttered and confusing that frustration took the fun out of the build. So after completing the basic hull structure on the inverted skeleton I packed the entire boat up in the box and went on to do Chuck's 18th Longboat and the AL Marie Jeanne instead.  Now that I have several excellent Willie Bennett build logs to use as references, I've decided to give it another try.

I've wanted to build a Skipjack model after taking my granddaughter to the Chesapeake Maritime Musuem on St Michaels MD several years back and seeing several examples of these fine Chesapeake Bay work boats.

First the box with contents and ship's plans (if you enlarge the photos - last 3 photos below - you'll see what I mean by cluttered).

This is where I left the model when I decided to suspend the build

This is the status so far. Since the below decks structure will be completely covered I chose to not spend a lot of time detailing it and instead installed just enough to strengthen the model. This kit has a tendency to paint one into a corner if not careful. Installing the centerboard was a bit tricky and drilling the holes for the pivot was even more tricky given the side to side clearance and the length of the drill bit. I had to hold the bit in my fingers and rotate it slowing without the aid of a chuck.  And, yes, a few of the deck planks are skewed and not completely perpendicular. I cut the notches in the clamp plank off the model after bending to shape using Chuck's hairdryer heat method  and letting the planks sit clamped for about 36 hours. In some instances I am using butt joints and in others I'm notching the ends to fit into the pre-cut notches in the clamp plank. ("Clamp" is the term used in the plans)

So pull up a barrel, bench, chair, box or whatever and enjoy some popcorn from Sjors popcorn machine (Thanks Sjors ) and join the build.

I have never carved anything but a turkey before, but considering Lindworm is Viking for dragon thought I would try a figurehead for this build. Made out of Mahogany, Maple and Bubinga. Not sure if it will work but I may have found a new dimension to my ship building...    Now the wings on the hull make some sense.

The base of the keel where the ribs are cemented was reinforced with 1/4 square stock to lock them all in place.  I feel I have to show you this........I have no real power tools,  just my trusty jig saw.   I was hoping I could get a scroll saw......or even a band saw,  before I got around to doing this.   the pull was too strong,  so I improvised,  and converted the jig saw to a scroll saw.

here is a blurry look at the laboritory.........and here is the monster.

The deck template is not going to do the job........but this is how I got the shape of the bow and stern.

To duplicate the deck beams was a total bust.......they looked like  freaking french fries!  So.......after running the deck joices,  I used planking to create the deck beams.

Well, finally have the hull and deck planked, time for a little thought as to where I go from here. Guess I can do that while I'm sanding ...  The bulk of the hull is planked with quarter sawed African Mahogany ( which I call Bubble Wood ) , the transom was made with rough sawed  African mahogany as well.. The lines of the hull are broken up a bit by the Bubinga wings but still has the sleek look I was going for. The deck is planked in Maple, forgot to take a picture of that.
Back to the drawing board... Thanks for taking a look....

Hi Patrick, Thanks a lot, I really like to start a ship and see where the process takes me, kinda fun that way. I believe I have come up with an idea for the finished ship, I hope it turns out as cool as I see it in my head....lol

Hello again! I have realized something… I am a really slow builder ! Please excuse the snail pace of this build log. I (finally) finished getting the hull to the correct length. There is one large dent I will need to correct with a lot of wood filler that I will have to purchase, due to the fact that I don't have any.
You can see it at the bow area. I will have to get to cutting cardboard again for the side templates. Also, I have a new baby brother as of this night, which is super awesome! I hope to have some more building time this weekend as well.
    Until next time.
