Hello Douglas -  I am also building Confederacy and am working on the filler strips under the stern counter.  I have been looking at other build logs to try and understand how the final shape should look.  I hate to say it, but I don't think yours are quite right.  Check the instructions on page 19:  "The outer edge of the strip should be flush with the edge of the lower counter (as defined by the stern frames)" and take a look at the picture.  Dubz' build log illustrates how this should look:

Click on the arrow at the upper right to go to the correct entry.   With your current filler block, I don't think the planking will turn out very well.

    Hi Gray !

I love you so much ! Finally there is one telling me whether I am doing right or wrong. It is my first time and I found it very difficult to visualize the shape of the bow and stern. Now you are telling me what it should be like. I am glad that you are telling me at this early stage. I got to figure out what to do to make it right.

Looks I got away to another modelling project is to wait for your comment !

    Thank you again !

    Regards,

    Douglas

  2. Moving onto the beakhead bulkhead deck. Basswood strips were planked. It was said that the top of the planked deck should flush with the door opening sill. It was already a little lower than the sill. After sanding, it is even lower. May be I have to plank a second layer and make it good. Should I sand the deck to a curve shape ? Lower at both sides and higher at center ?

    Hi Douglas,

Are you still active on this build, Or, are you just really busy like everyone else in Hong Kong. Love that place!

    Cheers

    Martin

Hi Martin, yes, I am still here. I tried to make perfect the bow and stern filler blocks, well, I tried to make it better. Then I went for a family tour, and then to arrange shipment of a R/C model boat from Bristol.............haha, these were what made me busy and seemed to be disappear.

I am still here and I will get back onto the model, soon.

    Regards,

    Douglas

  4. This is my first time building a wooden ship. I found it difficult to visualize the shape of the stern so I think I better do a stern filler. Here is the pair. What do you guys think ? Are they look right ? They are not yet attached onto the frame.

Hahahaa, no, I wouldn't mind at all. That is not my eye, nor my wife's eye. It is a photo I copied from internet more than ten years ago. I use it in some forums. Hehe, sorry to disappoint you. :P

    Hi Douglas,

good work, you sure are a swift builder, nice progress in the first months....

    :)

    Nils

    Thank you Nils !

I am new to this subject, still got a lot to learn. Quite a lot of fitting work which recall me of the time as a trainee some twenty plus years ago.

  7. Then I got back to do shadow box.

With the original "backing piece" on, I found the mounts #30 and #31 are way too proud of the frames, which means quite a lot to be faired.

I cut the "backing piece" by 5mm, put it in center position, so mounts #30 and #31 would sit lower.

hi Douglas. great progress thus far. I was in Hong Kong earlier last year, I LOVED your city! what an amazing place. I spend some time trying to locate a hobbies shop that sold wooden ship models and did not find any. is there one that I missed? most of my evenings were spent on the restaurants by temple Pear St market. I wish some company would build a kit of a Star Ferry boat, i would build that in a second.  anyhow, I hope to be back there next summer.. ill follow your build.

    Juan P.

    Thank you Juan !

Hong Kong is a very crowded small place. Everything is handy here, shops, restaurants, like many big cities. However, we are short of space. Say, you can't find big park with grass land here. No ponds for R/C boats. Not to mention R/C planes. Isn't it sad ? Haha.

There are some hobby shops at Mongkok in the Kowloon side, airsoft guns, plastics models, R/C cars, drones, but no wooden ship models. Once, around 15 years ago, Artesania Latina kits were available at Sogo department store at Causeway Bay, and two other hobby shops. But it is no longer available. I think you could hardly find modelers here, who is into this subject. With such a low demand no one would do this business. Lucky that internet ties up model shops/manufacturers together, or I won't be able to build this.

As far as I know, there is no Star Ferry kit available. I know some who build high speed HK-China boat models by themselves, but no Star Ferry, yet. If you make one from scratch, yours would be the first ! Think about it.

    Regards,

    Douglas

p.s. Just did a search at YouTube, there is one Star Ferry model at Taiwan and another one at Vancourver.

  9. The instruction said to mark the positions of the sills by the template. However, I found this a bit difficult and inaccurate. As the transom will be later glue onto the lintels and sills, I think why not use the transom to mark the positons of the sills.
