Brendan White? I got mine from him as well! Went to his house near Eindhoven in Holland a few years  ago, met him,  played a few and bought one. Double skin and tunable. Great guy, Brendan!
My little band of Irish wannabees are going to play at an Irish whiskey tasting event in a few weeks. Free drinks for us!!!
As for building, I'm still busy trying to finish the Lady Nelson. The Syren is waiting for me on the shelf. I'm enjoying and appreciating your build. Good learning  for me.

Ahhh Musicians!  A great sub-thread here for sure.
Nice looking set there Per!  Never can have too many cymbals to play with.
Dutchman: indeed! Another bodhránist out there? :-)  I have my collection of those. I play monthly with an Irish group (whistle/flute, guitar, fiddle, and myself). We have a jolly time. We are more like Flook (great band). One drum from Brendan White and the other two from Christian Hedwitschak.

To the build: I am slowly making progress on the sills.... and I am dabbling with a carronade micro-build (Caldercraft) to see if I like them enough for the Syren. They are a little pricey....   So some images....

This is going to be slow going for me.... I am now working on the gunport sills. This morning, I ran a batten to locate the sills, made the mark along each bulkhead and started to figure out the sill shapes. I plan on cutting each one to shape, a little larger than needed, then sand down from there. For strength I am using PVA glue for best bond and strength, especially since these parts are on the fragile thin pieces of the bulwarks. This will then take time to dry, etc.  Here's the foremost sill in place and aligned as best I can.

Thanks Dutchman, I hope you survived Christmas all right. Here is a "Gelukkig Nieuwjaar" back. (My Dutch has been a while so luckily I could check my spelling with your post just above...)
My internet was out for more than a week (just came back on today). A real estate company decided to put in a rather large for sale sign and severed a main telco line. Apparently it happens more often.
It's amazing how many nice discussions the admiral and I had with our sons once their gaming, facebook and internet movies/series options, etc. weren't available. We won't see them again for a while now.
Anyway, I have finished the deck and have attached some photo's to show the progress. I ended up adding some filler blocks next to the centre ones so I had somewhere to glue the planks onto. Had a bit of a sore wrist after drilling 900 odd holes and filling them with wax.
The result of the stain on the deck is much better than the hull. Still a little bit patchy in places but I'm very pleased with it.
I haven't warmed up to doing the copper plating just yet. I'm not sure how I am going to go, but I will soon find out with some practice.

Small moments here and there to work on the ship. I have finished framing out the hull, wales, and keel.

Deck furniture is complete, although I'm not quite happy with the pinrails. Holy moly it is hard to get these holes centered.. I've been starting them with <1mm bits and then step up using 1.5, 2 and 2.5mm bits in a pin vice, but it's a challenge to keep them straight and not have the grain tear out between them. A light varnish before drilling would probably help here.

Next step is attaching the rudder. Biggest challenge so far is shaping the tiller. I have turned a dremel into a makeshift lathe, but am wondering what type of tool to use to cut into the metal. It's very hard, but a carbide-tipped drill bit cut right through the first piece I tried. A metal file is not hard enough though. I'm searching for something in between.

I decided to cut the cap rails out of plywood in one piece which worked out OK. They may be a little too wide but I don't think it's too bad.
    Next stage is the deck.
I like the deck layout that Dirk used on his Syren, so to get a feel on how the treenails and the plank cut lengths would work out with the bulwarks and filler blocks I overlayed his drawing on top of one of my photo's (I hope you don't mind using your drawing Dirk...). No accuracy in the overlay because of the distortion of the photo, but I just wanted to have a look.
I think I will go this way. I may need to add some supports next to the filler block where the planks are cut.
I also started to play with the stand supports and drew up a few profile options. I like to get the stand sorted before the copper plates get added to avoid scratching them.
This will be my last post before Christmas, so: Have a Great Christmas everyone.

Just a few more progress photo's.
I decided against fiddling with the outside stain colors for now and gave the whole outside a clear matt varnish for protection. Next I went on with the inboard planking and painted it red. The bulwark thickness ended up a little bit too thick for a 3/16" cap rail to create an inboard overhang, so I plan to use an 1/4" plank and make it a bit wider.

A little time today spent on the build. Taking it slow and carefully.... Placed the simulated lower deck in place today. The edges of the planks are rubbed with a pencil graphite at a 45 degree angle. This tends to slightly reshape the long edge of the plank and show some darker edging nicely. Once glued in place, the planking was stained with Golden Oak. Funny thing, though, my golden oak looks less golden and a bit darker than others'... I wonder if my stain is old or something. M'eh. ;-)

    Hi Peter,

The below photo shows what my hull looked like after applying Minwax Golden Oak.  I believe that was after numerous light sandings and reapplications of the stain as well. It actually looked far "blotchier" in person than in the photo. The photo at the very bottom shows what my hull looks like now (although all of my trennails are now in. yes!)

By carefully brushing very thinned down acrylic brown paints to my hull, I was able to "blend" the color together, so the finish looks more uniform.

So I went on with the next chapter and put the disappointment of the stain finish behind me.
    Thanks for the compliment Jonathan.
Hi Alan, I am not sure what you mean by applying many layers of acrylic washes. I can't picture in my head what it would look like.
Here are some photo's on the progress on the stern.
I used a (very) simple way of adding a profile to the stern molding strips, which I showed in the last photo. It took a few attempts to get the screw tip in the middle of the channel, but once that was sorted, it went surprisingly well.

    Thanks Doug & Jim.
I was struggling a bit with the next stage, which is the finish. I decided to use wax for the treenails. I left the wax stick in the sun for a while to soften it up a bit. So far so good. Marking up the waterline and painting the various parts black also went well. However, I was dreading applying the varnish. The problem was that I forgot to pre-select the best 14 strips for that area. In my enthusiasm I just got on with it (after the penny dropped, I quickly put 30 good strips aside for the deck...). In the process I ended up with a few pretty average planks and some colour differences as well. There is only so much sanding you can do, so in the end there was only one way to find out. Just go for it.
At the back of photo 51 you can see the variations.
So I'm not sure yet if I should just leave it, or lightly sand and try a second coat with the risk of making it worse.
Also what is the recommendation with regards to clear varnish. At which stages in the build would you apply that.
    Any feedback would be great.

ok here are the pictures I promised. They are all the same. I am just playing with lighting to find the best solution so they don't look washed out. Planking the deck continues. Starboard is done, working on Port. Any suggestions how you clean up the smudges and excess CA?

So shipyard goes one...slowly because the presitential elections in Cyprus are coming to their pick (am the campaign manager of one of the main canditates) but still I visit Hermione even if I come home very late in the night. Mostly just to look at her... some times even to work on her even very shortly.

I felt like putting the holes for the mast in before adding the deck. It was a bit of a struggle because I only have the dremel drill stand (max drill size for the chuck is 3mm, the rest hand drill) and I used pine blocks. So the mast hole in the blocks were expectedly way out of alignment (no surprises here). I then lined the hole in the bottom of the block up with the location of the mast on the deck and screwed the block down. Next I added a dowel, loosened the block a bit and started adding packers under the block until I was happy with the alignment.
I'm not sure if I would recommend doing it this way, because I am not 100% happy with the end result but I thought I'd share it anyway. When (if?) I get to the point of adding the masts, I don't think it will be too hard to fix the angles. At least they are in the right location and they line up across the length of the ship. So I got two out of three...

I finished the swivel gun supports.  Classically these would have been painted black, but I made them out of boxwood and kind of like the look.  For the metal reinforcing bands at the top, I cut a shallow kerf in all 4 sides and CA'd some black rigging thread in the kerf.  I used the same technique to make the cannon reinforcing rings in my Battle Station model.  Two HO gauge railroad spikes were glued in to simulate bolts holding the supports in place.  I only did six supports, 3 per side, leaving off the last ones on the poop deck and the two in the fo'c'sle.  The deck and rails are getting crowded!

The supports need poly and the bulwark planking needs to be touched up.  I scraped the poly off the planking before gluing the supports in place.

    Hi Doug,
Here are the clamp photo's. The trick is to use flexible materials that don't slide off when clamped on an angle. However, I lost count on how many time I had to get on the floor looking for the eraser, cork block or clamp. So far I manage to hold on to the Syren.

Well, I finished the planking today so here are some photo's. A nice milestone. I am really enjoying the journey so far.
Next, I will be spending some time working out the colours scheme and the treenails. I will make up a panel with some of the scrap planks and practice a bit before I go any further on the model.
    Peter.

Learning to make oars to row de boat. There is a formula based on the beam of the boat so calculating from that. Using bamboo skewers and toothpicks for the shaft and planks for the paddle area. Need some thinning of the shaft but looks pretty good so far. Stabbed my finger though...ouch.

Well, the 0.5mm drill bits are on order. I decided not to use the golden oak. I can't get the Minwax Golden Oak here in Perth and I'm not happy with the British Paint Golden oak. I am favouring a Baltic Pine stain with a clear matt varnish at the moment but I'm still experimenting. Choosing colours is turning out to be a real pain. Even the red I end up mixing myself from 3 different reds (I have got about 8 tubes of red and a coupe of valleja paints). I hope I don't run out because there is no way I can get the same colour by mixing it a second time...lol.
Enough ranting. Here are some more pics. I am slowly working my way towards the corner with the tightest bend.
